Competition. Corporate Responsibility. And The China Question, Joseph Vining Jan 2003

Competition. Corporate Responsibility. And The China Question, Joseph Vining

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Corporate responsibility is a debatable question worth having a discussion about - exemption and difference from the norm. There is necessarily the implication of the alternative, corporate non-responsibility, or some would like to say, irresponsibility.

Growth And The Expression Of Alternative Life Cycles In The Salamander Ambystoma Talpoideum (Caudata: Ambystomatidae), Travis J. Ryan, Raymond D. Semlitsch Jan 2003

Growth And The Expression Of Alternative Life Cycles In The Salamander Ambystoma Talpoideum (Caudata: Ambystomatidae), Travis J. Ryan, Raymond D. Semlitsch

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Complex life cycles (CLCs) contain larval and adult phases that are morphologically and ecologically distinct. Simple life cycles (SLCs) have evolved from CLCs repeatedly in a wide variety of lineages but the processes that may underlie the transition have rarely been identified or investigated experimentally. We examined the influence of larval growth rate on the facultative expression of alternative life cycles (metamorphosis or maturation as gill-bearing adults [= paedomorphosis]) in the salamander Ambystoma talpoideum. We manipulated growth rates by altering the amount of food individuals received throughout larval development. The expression of alternative life cycles in A. talpoideum is influenced …

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

See additional files below for the Presentation.

We describe a computer model of intracranial pressure (ICP) dynamics that evaluates clinical treatment options for elevated ICP during traumatic brain injury (TBI). The model uses fluid volumes as primary state variables and explicitly models fluid flows as well as the resistance, compliance, and pressure associated with each intra - and extracranial compartment (arteries and arterioles, capillary bed, veins, venous sinus, ventricles, and brain parenchyma). The model evaluates clinical events and therapies such as intra - and extra-parenchymal hemorrhage, cerebral edema, cerebrospinal fluid drainage, mannitol administration, head elevation, and mild hyperventilation. The model …

A Comparison Of Floristic Diversity In Old-Growth Versus Mid-Successional Secondary-Growth Hardwood Forests Of The White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, United States, Leslie Marie Teeling-Adams Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Floristic Diversity In Old-Growth Versus Mid-Successional Secondary-Growth Hardwood Forests Of The White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, United States, Leslie Marie Teeling-Adams

Doctoral Dissertations

There is currently debate over whether managed forests will ever regain the species diversity of old-growth stands. While succession and response to disturbance of tree species has been extensively researched, little similar effort has focused on understory herbaceous communities. This study conducted large-scale, comprehensive botanical inventories of three old-growth and three mid-successional (80--100 year old) secondary forest stands in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest (WMNF). Cluster analysis and TWINSPAN grouped the secondary sites within two steps. Old-growth floras were significantly richer in total, total herbaceous, woodland herbaceous, and unique herbaceous species. Abundance distributions of the two treatment groups were …

Transcriptional Elongation Defects Enhance Upstream Poly (A) Site Utilization And Spt5 Affects Mrna Degradation Through Its Physical And Functional Interaction With Ccr4 -Not Complex, Yajun Cui Jan 2003

Transcriptional Elongation Defects Enhance Upstream Poly (A) Site Utilization And Spt5 Affects Mrna Degradation Through Its Physical And Functional Interaction With Ccr4 -Not Complex, Yajun Cui

Doctoral Dissertations

While a number of proteins are involved in elongational processes, the mechanism of action of most of these factors remains unclear primarily because of the lack of suitable in vivo model systems. We have identified in yeast several genes, each of which contain internal poly (A) sites, whose full-length mRNA formation is reduced by mutations in RNA polymerase II subunit RPB2, elongation factor SPT5, or TFIIS. RPB2 and SPT5 defects also promoted the utilization of upstream poly (A) sites for genes that contain multiple 3 ' poly (A) signaling sequences, supporting a role for elongation in differential poly (A) site …

Supporting And Being Supported: Receiving And Providing Social Support In Mothers Of Young Children, Jennifer S. Feenstra Jan 2003

Supporting And Being Supported: Receiving And Providing Social Support In Mothers Of Young Children, Jennifer S. Feenstra

Doctoral Dissertations

Social support research has long focused on one aspect of support, receiving support. The present study expands social support to include both receiving and providing support, applies the ideas of social exchange theory to this expanded concept, and test hypotheses pertaining to this broader definition of social support. The emotional, tangible, and information/advice support received from and provided to sixty-five mothers of young children in their relationships with their spouse, parents, and others was assessed on a weekly basis for four weeks. Greater perceived support from friends and family and greater support received and provided in the relationship with spouse …

Free Solution Electrophoresis Measurements And Their Theoretical Relationships To Net Protein Valence, Jennifer A. Durant Jan 2003

Free Solution Electrophoresis Measurements And Their Theoretical Relationships To Net Protein Valence, Jennifer A. Durant

Doctoral Dissertations

Biochemical solutions are composed to a large degree of charged molecules (proteins, DNA, dissolved salts, etc) which can interact and therefore exert a force on each other. Analytical determination of the valence of biological macro-ions contributes to our understanding of the forces involved in both intra- and inter-molecular interactions. This dissertation uses two free solution techniques, membrane confined electrophoresis (MCE) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), to study valence in the context of a series of charge mutants of T4 lysozyme and RNase Sa. The use of these mutants allows attribution of the changes in electrophoretic behavior entirely to changes in charge. …

Nuclear And Cytoplasmic Genetic Variation In Picea: Dna Markers For Evaluating Past Migration, Introgression And Evolutionary History, Joselle Germano-Presby Jan 2003

Nuclear And Cytoplasmic Genetic Variation In Picea: Dna Markers For Evaluating Past Migration, Introgression And Evolutionary History, Joselle Germano-Presby

Doctoral Dissertations

Mitochondrial and chloroplast haplotypes were identified in range-wide populations of white (Picea glauca), black (P. mariana ) and red spruce (P. rubens). The chloroplast genome exhibited more intraspecific variation than the mitochondrial genome. Red spruce displayed the most total chloroplast genetic diversity (H T = 0.52). Neighbor-joining analysis arranged the chloroplast haplotypes into three monophyletic groups that were nearly 100% species-specific. These results strongly refute a previously proposed progenitor/derivative relationship of black/red spruce. Red and black spruce were estimated to have diverged from their common ancestor ∼0.6--3.5 million years ago. Mitochondrial diversity detected in black spruce was attributed to interspecific …

Evaluation Of Bacteriophage And Viral Persistence During Alkaline Stabilization In Sludge And Biosolids Intended For Land Application, Jacqueline Joy Brabants Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Bacteriophage And Viral Persistence During Alkaline Stabilization In Sludge And Biosolids Intended For Land Application, Jacqueline Joy Brabants

Doctoral Dissertations

The use of lime to reduce or eliminate pathogen content is a cost-effective treatment method currently being employed in many Class B biosolids production plants in the United States. A bench scale model of lime stabilization was designed to evaluate pathogen persistence. The survivability of poliovirus type 1, fecal coliforms, Salmonella, adenovirus type 5, rotavirus Wa, and the male-specific bacteriophage MS-2 was evaluated under lime stabilization conditions in various matrices. Salmonella and fecal coliforms were evaluated at 28°C and poliovirus and MS-2 were evaluated at both 28°C and 4°C for survivability under lime stabilization conditions in a sludge matrix. All …

Introducing Performance Into The Communication Curriculum For Engineers: Breaking The Mould, Constance Matilda Israel Jan 2003

Introducing Performance Into The Communication Curriculum For Engineers: Breaking The Mould, Constance Matilda Israel

Doctoral Dissertations

Education in South Africa has, thankfully, not escaped the winds of change. The introduction of Outcomes-based Education (OBE) has generated much debate. How have technikons responded to the educational transformation impelled by sociopolitical change? I refer here specifically to the Communication curricula for engineers at Mangosuthu Technikon.

This research explores the effects in my Communication classroom of introducing performance, through games and a dramatic text. My intention is to subvert the potential dangers of OBE, given its behaviourist and prescriptive thrust, and a possible reversion to the transmission model in its application at Mantec. I argue that gaps in the …

Satellite Indices Of Fluvial Influence In Coastal Waters, Joseph E. Salisbury Ii. Jan 2003

Satellite Indices Of Fluvial Influence In Coastal Waters, Joseph E. Salisbury Ii.

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation a suite of satellite, discharge and in-situ measurements is used to explore the spatio-temporal distribution of terrestrial constituents in coastal environments. The covariance between riverine delivery of optically active constituents and the corresponding optical variability in neighboring coastal waters for the Mississippi and Orinoco Rivers is documented. From this work, satellite-based indices of fluvial influence (IFI), are developed which contain information on the spatial extent of riverine constituents in coastal waters. The IFI is defined as the correlation between time series of riverine discharge and an ocean color satellite-derived property in the region proximal to a river's …

Spatial Modeling And Visualization Of Habitat Response To Hydrologic Restoration In New England Salt Marshes, Raymond Anthony Konisky Jan 2003

Spatial Modeling And Visualization Of Habitat Response To Hydrologic Restoration In New England Salt Marshes, Raymond Anthony Konisky

Doctoral Dissertations

Anthropogenic alterations that restrict tidal flows negatively impact 20% of New England salt marshes, but management attempts to restore tides to these sites can be met with unexpected or less than optimal results. Restoration planners may be hindered by a lack of synthesized information regarding important biotic and abiotic factors that determine the distribution of dominant salt marsh plants and invasive species. An ecosystem model was developed to better predict salt marsh habitat response to hydrologic modification as a synthesis of existing models for biomass production, marsh elevation, tidal hydrology, and plant succession. A field experiment was conducted to provide …

Age, Growth, And Reproductive Biology, Of The Winter Skate, Leucoraja Ocellata, In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James Antoni Sulikowski Jan 2003

Age, Growth, And Reproductive Biology, Of The Winter Skate, Leucoraja Ocellata, In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James Antoni Sulikowski

Doctoral Dissertations

This study describes the age, growth and reproductive biology of the winter skate, Leucoraja ocellata, in the Western Gulf of Maine. Age was estimated by enumerating annular bands within the vertebral centra. Precision of the age estimates was evaluated using the Index of Average Percent Error and the annual nature of growth band formation was documented using marginal increment analyses. Growth was assessed with the use of the von Bertalanffy growth equation. Age and size at maturity was estimated by measuring morphological and histological changes in the reproductive tract and circulating steroid hormone concentrations. Maturity ogives for males predict that …

Living The Stereotype: Connections Between Male Behavior And Male Images, Andrew Paul Smiler Jan 2003

Living The Stereotype: Connections Between Male Behavior And Male Images, Andrew Paul Smiler

Doctoral Dissertations

This project examined some linkages and discrepancies between theories that describe the acquisition of gender typical attributes in childhood with theories that describe the maintenance of those attributes in adulthood. This perspective included the idea that there are several well known ways of enacting masculinity, related to well known stereotypes (e.g., jock, business, sensitive new age guy), and highlighted within sex variability. Because a distinction between biological sex and gender was made, the sample was not restricted to males despite focusing on the masculine. One focus of the project was the consistency with which an individual enacts a particular stereotypical …

Investigations Into The Digestive System Proteases Of Argiope Aurantia (Araneae: Araneidae), Hemolytic Agents Of Spider Venoms, And The Role Of Both In Necrotic Arachnidism, Matthew Joseph Foradori Jan 2003

Investigations Into The Digestive System Proteases Of Argiope Aurantia (Araneae: Araneidae), Hemolytic Agents Of Spider Venoms, And The Role Of Both In Necrotic Arachnidism, Matthew Joseph Foradori

Doctoral Dissertations

Necrotic arachnidism, or tissue necrosis following spider bites is a widespread problem. Knowledge of the exact mechanism that produces such lesions is still incomplete. Here I have examined spider digestive fluid proteases and spider venom enzymes (e.g., sphingomyelinase D and phospholipase A2) for their potential to cause necrotic lesions, as both are thought to be primary agents.

The digestive fluid of Argiope aurantia was examined for its ability to cleave a variety of extra-cellular matrix proteins, including collagen, elastin, and fibronectin. Having confirmed that the fluid has collagenases, the digestive fluid was injected into the skin of rabbits to observe …

Spatial Properties Of Photophobia, James Michael Stringham Jan 2003

Spatial Properties Of Photophobia, James Michael Stringham

Doctoral Dissertations

The squint response corresponding to photophobia (light-induced discomfort) was assessed via electromyography as a function of stimulus size, retinal locus (superior, inferior, temporal, nasal), and retinal eccentricity in three subjects. These results were compared to the same subjects' psychophysically-determined spatial distributions of macular pigment, to examine in detail the attenuation of photophobia by macular pigment. Results indicate that the photophobia response is preferentially biased to prevent the fovea from exposure to potentially damaging short-wavelength light. In this regard, macular pigment appears to act as a spatially-integrated filter, serving to attenuate photophobia to a great extent. Photophobia and macular pigment therefore …

Thermoionization And Dissociation Of Fullerenes And Endohedral Fullerenes, Rongping Deng Jan 2003

Thermoionization And Dissociation Of Fullerenes And Endohedral Fullerenes, Rongping Deng

Doctoral Dissertations

Electron emission and unimolecular dissociation of energetically excited fullerenes and endohedral fullerenes are studied with mass spectrometry. Three experimental approaches have been developed for these studies. These are UV laser excitation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), laser desorption and ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS), and ion-molecule collision mass spectrometry (IMC-MS).

Our first experimental effort is to investigate delayed electron emission from multiphoton excited C60 molecules. A lower limit of the probability of electron emission from multiphoton excited C60 molecules is determined to be about 2.6%. This result indicates that electron emission is not merely parasitic to dissociation.

The second experimental effort is …

Factors Associated With Atlantic White -Cedar Seedling Recruitment On Microtopographic And Landscape Scales, Brown Mill Pond, Rye, New Hampshire, Lara Megdane Gengarelly Jan 2003

Factors Associated With Atlantic White -Cedar Seedling Recruitment On Microtopographic And Landscape Scales, Brown Mill Pond, Rye, New Hampshire, Lara Megdane Gengarelly

Doctoral Dissertations

The decline of Atlantic white-cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) throughout its range has motivated researchers to investigate cedar seedling recruitment. In this study, conducted at Brown Mill Pond in Rye, New Hampshire, the distribution pattern of cedar seedlings was studied in order to identify which, if any, biological or physical factors observed at a microtopographic scale were associated with seedling presence. On a landscape scale, five previously identified cedar communities were measured for differences in water table level and soil moisture in order to determine associations between stand dynamics and hydrology.

A field survey showed that cedar seedlings were (1) absent from …

Conceptualizing And Measuring The Life Space And Its Relation To Openness To Experience, Marc A. Brackett Jan 2003

Conceptualizing And Measuring The Life Space And Its Relation To Openness To Experience, Marc A. Brackett

Doctoral Dissertations

The Life Space is divided into four domains that surround personality, which broadly encompass a person's biological foundations, owned possessions, interactions and daily activities, and group memberships. In Study 1, a revised measure of the Life Space (the College Student Life Space Scale) was developed. Factor analysis of the items within each domain resulted in 96 meaningful and reliable factor-based scales that provided a rich description of college students' personal surroundings and everyday behavior. A second-order (hierarchical) factor analysis of the first-order scales resulted in seven global Life Space dimensions. In Study 2, the first- and second-order Life Space scales …

Calcium -Dependent Protein Kinases Are Myristoylated And Associated With Different Membranes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sheen Xun Lu Jan 2003

Calcium -Dependent Protein Kinases Are Myristoylated And Associated With Different Membranes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sheen Xun Lu

Doctoral Dissertations

In plants, calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) are the predominant calcium-stimulated kinases and are known to be involved in many cellular processes. CDPK enzymatic activity previously has been detected in many locations in plant cells, including the membrane fraction. However, little is known about the subcellular locations of individual CDPKs or the mechanisms involved in targeting them to those locations. Arabidopsis contains 34 genes that are predicted to encode CDPKs and 28 of the predicted CDPK proteins have potential myristoylation motifs at their amino termini. Myristate is a 14-carbon saturated fatty acid that is attached co-translationally to the amino-terminal glycine of …

Assessment Of The Fate Of Cryptosporidium Parvum, Giardia Lamblia And Ascaris Lumbricoides In Class A Composting And Class B Lime Stabilization Biosolids Treatment Processes, Christine L. Bean Jan 2003

Assessment Of The Fate Of Cryptosporidium Parvum, Giardia Lamblia And Ascaris Lumbricoides In Class A Composting And Class B Lime Stabilization Biosolids Treatment Processes, Christine L. Bean

Doctoral Dissertations

The management of biosolids in the United States has become an issue of public health concern in regard to disposal. Congress created the Clean Water Act in 1972 to protect waters in the United States and as a result, no longer can human waste be dumped into oceans or rivers. Means of disposal of biosolids are focused on land application today. The practice of land application takes into consideration the classification of the biosolids material and management practices to control access to and growth of crops on the land. Biosolids are classified as either Class A or Class B depending …

Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Microspheres In A Hydrogel, Wenzhe Fan Jan 2003

Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Microspheres In A Hydrogel, Wenzhe Fan

Doctoral Dissertations

A novel design of chemical sensors based on swellable molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres is presented. These sensors were successfully used to measure norephedrine and theophylline in water and in buffer at neutral pH.

A new method was developed for preparing swellable norephedrine templated poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-acrylic acid) (poly NIPA-AAc) particles by suspension polymerization in a perfluorocarbon solvent using ultrasonic emulsion technique. The particles were crosslinked with 5% of N, N'-methlene-bis-acylamide (MBA) using 20% fluorinated surfactant as a stabilizer. The resulting particles were around 6 mum in diameter. HYPAN and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were used to make hydrogel membranes containing …

Thermal Rearrangements Of Linear Carbon Chains: Theoretical And Experimental Studies, John Mabry Jan 2003

Thermal Rearrangements Of Linear Carbon Chains: Theoretical And Experimental Studies, John Mabry

Doctoral Dissertations

The potential energy surface of linear hydrocarbons has been extensively investigated by experiments and the use of molecular modeling. Linear C4 structures have demonstrated the potential to scramble their inner carbon atoms leading to the formation of novel strained intermediates.

Long-range carbon atom topomerization in a 1,3-diyne has been demonstrated for the first time. 1-Phenyl-4-p-tolyl-1,3-butadiene, 13C enriched at C-1, was synthesized and subjected to flash vacuum pyrolysis. Under high temperature and at low pressure, this resulted in nearly complete 13C label equilibration among all of the sp hybridized carbons, as seen by NMR analysis. It has been proposed that 1,3-diynes …

Synthetic, Structural, And Stability Studies Of Metal Complexes Of Cross -Bridged Tetraamine Macrocycles, Weijun Niu Jan 2003

Synthetic, Structural, And Stability Studies Of Metal Complexes Of Cross -Bridged Tetraamine Macrocycles, Weijun Niu

Doctoral Dissertations

Cross-bridging of tetraazamacrocyclic ligands with an ethylene unit forms a family of bicyclic tetraamine ligands originally designed and synthesized by the Weisman-Wong research group to selectively complex small metal ions such as Li+ in a cis-folded configuration. Cu(II), Ga(III), and In(III) complexes of these cross-bridged ligands have potential radiometal-based pharmaceutical applications due to their high kinetic stabilities. Cu(II) complexes of eight cross-bridged tetraazamacrocyclic ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Their relative kinetic stabilities were evaluated by monitoring acid-promoted dissociation processes using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The copper complex of a dicarboxylate pendant-armed cross-bridged cyclam was the most inert, consistent with its …
