Background The metastatic ability of tumor cells is determined by level of expression of specific genes that may be identified with the aid of cDNA microarray containing thousands of genes and can be used to establish the expression profile of disease related genes in complex biological system.
Materials and Methods Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma cell line and its high metastases adenoid cystic carcinoma clone were used as model systems to reveal the gene expression alteration related to metastasis mechanism by cDNA microarray analysis. The correlation of metastatic phenotypic changes and expression levels of 4 selected genes (encoding CD98, L6, RPL29, …

Ready To Change? Social Networks And Sustainable Organizations, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Sustained work life is a property of an organization and not a single individual or profession. Traditional organizational theory has focused change models for individuals or organizations, not on the organizational continuum. Change is a property of the organizational continuum. Our project is to redefining change theory for the organizational continuum and direct theory towards a more sustainable view of change.

A Mathematical Model Of Immune Response To Tumor Invasion, Lisette De Pillis, Ami Radunskaya
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Recent experimental studies by Diefenbach et al. [1] have brought to light new information about how the immune system of the mouse responds to the presence of a tumor. In the Diefenbach studies, tumor cells are modified to express higher levels of immune stimulating NKG2D ligands. Experimental results show that sufficiently high levels of ligand expression create a significant barrier to tumor establishment in the mouse. Additionally, ligand transduced tumor cells stimulate protective immunity to tumor rechallenge. Based on the results of the Diefenbach experiments, we have developed a mathematical model of tumor growth to address some of the questions …

Remote Sensing Estimates Of Boreal And Temperate Forest Woody Biomass: Carbon Pools, Sources, And Sinks, Jiarui Dong, Robert Kaufmann, Ranga Myneni, Compton Tucker, Pekka Kauppi, Jari Liski, Wolfgang Buermann, V. Alexeyev, Malcolm Hughs
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The relation between satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), cumulated over the growing season, and inventory estimates of forest woody biomass carbon is estimated statistically with data from 167 provinces and states in six countries (Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the USA for a single time period and Sweden for two periods). Statistical tests indicate that the regression model can be used to represent the relation between forest biomass and NDVI across spatial, temporal and ecological scales for relatively long time scales. For the 1.42 billion ha of boreal and temperate forests in the Northern Hemisphere, the …

First Report Of The North Dakota Rare Bird Committee, Dan Svingen, Ron E. Martin
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The status, distribution, and abundance of North Dakota's bird life was summarized several times during the twentieth century (e.g., Wood 1923, Bailey 1926, Stewart 1971, Stewart 1975). The most recent official North Dakota state bird list was Faanes and Stewart (1982). The state's avifauna has changed markedly since that list was published. In an attempt to document some of those changes, the North Dakota Natural Science Society formed the North Dakota Ornithological Records Committee in 1979. That committee's goals were to evaluate and archive documentations of rare bird sighting and to periodically revise the official state bird list. Herein we …

Population Ecology Of Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) And Its Parasitoid In Ethiopia, Ayalew Gashawbeza
All PhD Dissertations
The objective of this study was to generate information on the ecology of Diamondback moth (DBM) (Plutella xylostella L.) and the parasitoids associated with it with emphasis on parasitism for the purpose of strengthening biocontrol in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Prior to this study no or little information was available in Ethiopia on DBM despite its importance in brassica production. A series of studies were conducted between 2001 and 2002, including a survey covering the most important crucifer growing areas, within field distribution of larvae and pupae, yield loss assessment, suitability of wild and cultivated crucifers for DBM development …

Genetic Variability In Cotesia Davipes And Its Importance In Biological Control Of Lepidopteran Stemborers, Emmanuel Iyamulemye Niyibigira
All PhD Dissertations
Lepidoperan stemborers are a major constraint to increasing the production of maize and sorghum under subsistence farming conditions in sub-Saharan Africa. Classical biological control is considered as the most cost-effective form of pest management but it has not attained the desired success rate. It has been postulated that one major reason for the failures in classical biological control is related to the genetic diversity of released_ individuals of natural enemies. The aim of this study was to examine the importance of genetic variability in the establishment and performance of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) as a classical biological control …

Mate Preference: A Possible Causal Mechanism For A Moving Hybrid Zone, C. L. Bronson, Thoams C. Grubb, Jr., Gene D. Sattler, Michael J. Braun
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The study of patterns and underlying mechanisms within hybrid zones may provide insight into speciation. Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus; BC) and Carolina (P. carolinensis; CA) chickadees hybridize in an east–west band in the U.S.A. from New Jersey to Kansas. Within the past century, the Ohio portion of this hybrid zone and the CA range to the south have been moving northward while the BC range has retracted. We examined mate preference in females of both species as one possible causal mechanism for this shift. To be conservative about the nomenclature and results, the samples are referred to as either ‘BC-like’ or …

The Pseudomonas Syringae Type Iii-Secreted Protein Hopptod2 Possesses Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Activity And Suppresses Programmed Cell Death In Plants, Avelina Espinosa, Ming Guo, Vincent C. Tam, Zheng Qing Fu, James R. Alfano
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
The bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae possesses a type III protein secretion system that delivers many virulence proteins into plant cells. A subset of these proteins (called Avr proteins) is recognized by the plant’s innate immune system and triggers defences. One defence-associated response is the hypersensitive response (HR), a programmed cell death (PCD) of plant tissue. We have previously identified HopPtoD2 as a type III secreted protein from P. s. pv. tomato DC3000. Sequence analysis revealed that an N-terminal domain shared homology with Avr- PphD and a C-terminal domain was similar to protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). We demonstrated that purified …
