Their Own Best Resources: Students And Real-World Interaction, Observation, And Reflection, Brenda Ferreira Jan 2003

Their Own Best Resources: Students And Real-World Interaction, Observation, And Reflection, Brenda Ferreira

MA TESOL Collection

Students can use their experiences outside the ESL classroom to facilitate their own learning of culture and communicative competency. In a course I continue to design, students prepare for real-world interactions and learning. They practice communication strategies and discuss topics largely of their own choosing in a multi-cultural context. They then go out into the community to make cultural and communicative observations, and interact with native- and non-native speakers of English. This IPP presents various definitions of culture and communicative competency and gives suggestions for in-class and real-world activities, including communication tasks, observations, and reflections through journal writing.

Spatially Distributed Watershed Mapping And Modeling: Thermal Maps And Vegetation Indices To Enhance Land Cover And Surface Microclimate Mapping: Part 1 Jan 2003

Spatially Distributed Watershed Mapping And Modeling: Thermal Maps And Vegetation Indices To Enhance Land Cover And Surface Microclimate Mapping: Part 1

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The extent and type of watershed cover affects the movement of water in the hydrologic cycle, thus accurate representation of the physical and biological features of the landscape within the watershed is required. Satellite imagery from Landsat and other satellites provide land cover and surface microclimate information with high temporal and spatial accuracy. The use of these data to understand hydrologic processes depends on how accurately they are interpreted and mapped. This paper utilizes the surface radiant temperatures derived from the thermal band of Landsat images and vegetation indices derived from visible, near-infrared, thermal and mid- infrared spectrums to further …

Expression Of Hsp 27, Hsp 60, Hsc 70, And Hsp 70 Stress Response Genes In Cultured Human Urothelial Cells (Urotsa) Exposed To Lethal And Sublethal Concentrations Of Sodium Arsenite., Michael R. Rossi, Seema Somji, Scott H. Garrett, Mary Ann Sens, Joginder Nath, Donald S. Sens

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The stress response is one mechanism that the bladder urothelium could potentially employ to protect itself from cellular damage after exposure to arsenic and, in so doing, influence the shape of the dose-response curve at low concentrations of exposure to this environmental pollutant. In the present study, we used the cultured human urothelial cell line UROtsa, a model of human urothelium, to determine the expression of heat shock proteins hsp 27, hsp 60, hsc 70, and hsp 70 after acute and extended exposure of the cells to lethal and sublethal levels of sodium arsenite (NaAsO2). Acute exposure was modeled by …

Rapid Prion Neuroinvasion Following Tongue Infection, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard A. Bessen Jan 2003

Rapid Prion Neuroinvasion Following Tongue Infection, Jason C. Bartz, Anthony E. Kincaid, Richard A. Bessen

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Food-borne transmission of prions can lead to infection of the gastrointestinal tract and neuroinvasion via the splanchnic and vagus nerves. Here we report that the transmission of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) is 100,000-fold more efficient by inoculation of prions into the tongues of hamsters than by oral ingestion. The incubation period following TME agent (hereinafter referred to as TME) inoculation into the lingual muscles was the shortest among the five nonneuronal routes of inoculation, including another intramuscular route. Deposition of the abnormal isoform of the prion protein, PrPSc, was first detected in the tongue and submandibular lymph node …

An Escherichia Coli Mg1655 Lipopolysaccharide Deep-Rough Core Mutant Grows And Survives In Mouse Cecal Mucus But Fails To Colonize The Mouse Large Intestine, Annette K. Møller, Mary P. Leatham, Tyrrell Conway, Piet J.M. Nuijten, Louise A.M. De Haan, Karen A. Krogfelt, Paul S. Cohen Jan 2003

An Escherichia Coli Mg1655 Lipopolysaccharide Deep-Rough Core Mutant Grows And Survives In Mouse Cecal Mucus But Fails To Colonize The Mouse Large Intestine, Annette K. Møller, Mary P. Leatham, Tyrrell Conway, Piet J.M. Nuijten, Louise A.M. De Haan, Karen A. Krogfelt, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

The ability of E. coli strains to colonize the mouse large intestine has been correlated with their ability to grow in cecal and colonic mucus. In the present study, an E. coli MG1655 strain was mutagenized with a mini-Tn5 Km (kanamycin) transposon, and mutants were tested for the ability to grow on agar plates with mouse cecal mucus as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. One mutant, designated MD42 (for mucus defective), grew poorly on cecal-mucus agar plates but grew well on Luria agar plates and on glucose minimal-agar plates. Sequencing revealed that the insertion in MD42 was …

Message Deleted? Resolving Physician-Patient E-Mail Through Contract Law, Michael Mccann Jan 2003

Message Deleted? Resolving Physician-Patient E-Mail Through Contract Law, Michael Mccann

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the impact of e-mail on the physician-patient relationship, and how contract law can resolve the uncertainties incumbent in this nascent form of communication. Significantly, courts have yet to indicate when the physician-patient relationship begins by e-mail, or to what extent e-mail affects the duties of the relationship. Instead of waiting for judicial guidance, physicians and patients can employ specialized contracts to clarify the role that e-mail plays in their relationship. As a result, more physicians and patients will regard e-mail correspondence as a valuable means of communication, and a tool for improving the quality of health care …

Agricultural Biotechnology In China: An Unreachable Goal?, Stanley P. Kowalski Jan 2003

Agricultural Biotechnology In China: An Unreachable Goal?, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Recently there has been much discussion about the People’s Republic of China’s (PR) investment in and commitment to agricultural biotechnology (agri-biotech). Rapid economic expansion, population growth and technological development are changing the PRC; accompanying these changes is increased demand for high-quality food and fibre. Agri-biotech is optimistically viewed as an important way to meet these demands. Whereas Chinese technological capacity in agri-biotech has advanced significantly over the past decade, it may be unable to meet these challenges. Even when this capacity is combined with good intentions, enlightened policy and large capital outlays, accelerated development of agri-biotech may nevertheless be precluded. …

Nuclear Genes That Encode Mitochondrial Proteins For Dna And Rna Metabolism Are Clustered In The Arabidopsis Genome, Annakaisa Elo, Anna Lyznik, Delkin O. Gonzalez, Stephen D. Kachman, Sally A. Mackenzie Jan 2003

Nuclear Genes That Encode Mitochondrial Proteins For Dna And Rna Metabolism Are Clustered In The Arabidopsis Genome, Annakaisa Elo, Anna Lyznik, Delkin O. Gonzalez, Stephen D. Kachman, Sally A. Mackenzie

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

The plant mitochondrial genome is complex in structure, owing to a high degree of recombination activity that subdivides the genome and increases genetic variation. The replication activity of various portions of the mitochondrial genome appears to be nonuniform, providing the plant with an ability to modulate its mitochondrial genotype during development. These and other interesting features of the plant mitochondrial genome suggest that adaptive changes have occurred in DNA maintenance and transmission that will provide insight into unique aspects of plant mitochondrial biology and mitochondrial- chloroplast coevolution. A search in the Arabidopsis genome for genes involved in the regulation of …

Genre And The Invention Of The Writer: Reconsidering The Place Of Invention In Composition, Anis S. Bawarshi Jan 2003

Genre And The Invention Of The Writer: Reconsidering The Place Of Invention In Composition, Anis S. Bawarshi

All USU Press Publications

In a focused and compelling discussion, Anis Bawarshi looks to genre theory for what it can contribute to a refined understanding of invention. In describing what he calls "the genre function," he explores what is at stake for the study and teaching of writing to imagine invention as a way that writers locate themselves, via genres, within various positions and activities. He argues, in fact, that invention is a process in which writers are acted upon by genres as much as they act themselves. Such an approach naturally requires the composition scholar to re-place invention from the writer to the …

A Role Of The Basal Ganglia In Movement: The Effect Of Precues On Discrete Bi-Directional Movements In Parkinson’S Disease, Andrew M. Johnson, Philip A. Vernon, Quincy J. Almeida, Linda L. Grantier, Mandar S. Jog

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

The effect of a precue on improving movement initiation (i.e., reaction time; RT) is well understood, whereas its influence on movement execution (i.e., movement time; MT) has rarely been examined. The current study investigated the influence of a directional precue (i.e., left vs. right) on the RT and MT of simple and discrete bi-directional movements in a large sample of Parkinson’s disease patients and healthy control participants. Both patients and controls were tested twice, with testing sessions separated by 2 hours. Patients were tested first following an overnight levodopa withdrawal and again after they had taken their medication. Both patients …
