Monoclonal Antibody 1a7 And Use For The Treatment Of Melanoma And Small Cell Carcinoma, Malaya Chatterjee, Kenneth A. Foon, Sunil K. Chatterjee Jan 2003

Monoclonal Antibody 1a7 And Use For The Treatment Of Melanoma And Small Cell Carcinoma, Malaya Chatterjee, Kenneth A. Foon, Sunil K. Chatterjee

Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics Faculty Patents

The present invention relates to monoclonal antibody 1A7. This is an anti-idiotype produced by immunizing with an antibody specific for ganglioside GD2, and identifying a hybridoma secreting antibody with immunogenic potential in a multi-step screening process. Also disclosed are polynucleotide and polypeptide derivatives based on 1A7, including single chain variable region molecules and fusion proteins, and various pharmaceutical compositions. When administered to an individual, the 1A7 antibody overcomes immune tolerance and induces an immune response against GD2, which comprises a combination of anti-GD2 antibody and GD2-specific T cells. The invention further provides methods for treating a disease associated with altered …

An Economic Assessment Of The Potential For Predator Management To Benefit Puerto Rican Parrots, Richard M. Engeman, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Felipe Cano, Bernice Constantin Jan 2003

An Economic Assessment Of The Potential For Predator Management To Benefit Puerto Rican Parrots, Richard M. Engeman, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Felipe Cano, Bernice Constantin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The Puerto Rican parrot is one of the ten most endangered birds in the world, with the only wild population comprised of 30-40 birds. Predation has been identified as one of the factors limiting Puerto Rican parrot productivity in the wild, and the loss of a very few birds can have a great impact on the species. Management of red-tailed hawks, and black rats, feral cats and Indian mongooses, as well as further management of pearly-eyed thrashers is potentially beneficial to the parrot population. Because funding for the recovery of this rare species is finite, an analytical examination of the …

Wing-Assisted Incline Running And The Evolution Of Flight, Kenneth P. Dial Jan 2003

Wing-Assisted Incline Running And The Evolution Of Flight, Kenneth P. Dial

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Flapping wings of galliform birds are routinely used to produce aerodynamic forces oriented toward the substrate to enhance hindlimb traction. Here, I document this behavior in natural and laboratory settings. Adult birds fully capable of aerial flight preferentially employ wing-assisted incline running (WAIR), rather than flying, to reach elevated refuges (such as cliffs, trees, and boulders). From the day of hatching and before attaining sustained aerial flight, developing ground birds use WAIR to enhance their locomotor performance through improved foot traction, ultimately permitting vertical running. WAIR provides insight from behaviors observable in living birds into the possible role of incipient …

A Comparison Of Lifetime Implant Strategies For Beef Steers, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns, Donald L. Boggs Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Lifetime Implant Strategies For Beef Steers, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns, Donald L. Boggs

South Dakota Beef Report, 2003

Lifetime implant strategies were developed and applied to steer calves. The design was intended for evaluating strategies rather than specific implants. Strategies involving increasing potency of products used at common stages of production. Initial implants were administered when calves were approximately 2 mo of age. Implants did not increase BW at weaning or after backgrounding (P > 0.10) although they did increase ADG 5% over non-implanted controls during backgrounding (P < 0.05). The influence of implants on ADG was more pronounced during the finishing phase of production. Implants increased (P < 0.05) finishing phase ADG 18%, DMI 7.2%, and feed efficiency 9.4%. Overall post-weaning ADG increased 12% (P < 0.05) due to implants. Performance results changed when evaluating data on a live versus carcass weight basis due to differences in dressing percent. Increasing potency of the implant strategies caused progressive increases (P < 0.05) in carcass weight and ribeye area. Implanted steers produced fatter carcasses than did non-implanted steers (P < 0.05). There were no advances in skeletal or lean maturity attributable to the potency of the implant strategy. The frequency of carcasses grading Average Choice or better declined with implants. Implant strategies had no relevant influence on shear force. Overall, 12% of carcasses had a shear force > 5.0 kg (undesirable).
