Low-Fired Earthenwares In The African Diaspora: Problems And Prospects, Mark W. Hauser, Christopher R. Decorse
Low-Fired Earthenwares In The African Diaspora: Problems And Prospects, Mark W. Hauser, Christopher R. Decorse
Anthropology - All Scholarship
Local earthenware associated with enslaved African populations in the Americas, variously called “Colono-Ware,” “Afro-CaribbeanWare.” “Yabbas,” and “Criollo ware,” has received considerable attention from researchers. What unifies this disparate group of ceramics is not method of manufacture, design and decoration, or even form and function but the association or potential association with African diaspora populations. The ceramics incorporate some skills and techniques possibly brought by African potters to the Americas, as well as skills reflecting European and Native American traditions, and local adaptations in form, function, and manufacture.Analogies linking African ceramic traditions to American industries have at times been employed uncritically …

Leading Improvement In Schools By Embedding And Sustaining Change: It’S All About The Learning, Lorna Earl
APC Monographs
Developing leadership, sustainable leadership is a huge issue in education and will become even more significant. All over the world, as the “baby boomers” near the ends of their careers, we have large numbers of senior, respected administrators retiring. A lot of us came in on that same wave several decades ago. They were exciting times. What benefitted us was mentoring, support and direction. It is now up to us to ensure that our younger successors develop the confidence and the competence to be able to sustain change in their schools.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (Vns): Utility In Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Mark S. George, A. John Rush, Harold A. Sackeim, Lauren B. Marangell
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Early in the last century, neuroscientists initially speculated that it might be possible to influence brain activity and associated behaviours by stimulating the vagus nerve in the neck. Several animal studies pointed to this possibility. In the 1980s, Zabara discovered that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) could reduce or eliminate seizures in dogs. His discovery led to enhanced methods of direct VNS and the development of an implantable device for human VNS. VNS is now an accepted long-term treatment for epilepsy, used by over 15000 patients worldwide. Many have wondered whether VNS could treat other neuropsychiatric disorders. This paper reviews the …

Prevalence Of Bacteria Of Division Tm7 In Human Subgingival Plaque And Their Association With Disease, Mary M. Brinig, Paul W. Lepp, Cleber C. Ouverney, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman
Prevalence Of Bacteria Of Division Tm7 In Human Subgingival Plaque And Their Association With Disease, Mary M. Brinig, Paul W. Lepp, Cleber C. Ouverney, Gary C. Armitage, David A. Relman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Members of the uncultivated bacterial division TM7 have been detected in the human mouth, but little information is available regarding their prevalence and diversity at this site. Human subgingival plaque samples from healthy sites and sites exhibiting various stages of periodontal disease were analyzed for the presence of TM7 bacteria. TM7 ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was found in 96% of the samples, and it accounted for approximately 0.3%, on average, of all bacterial rDNA in the samples as determined by real-time quantitative PCR. Two new phylotypes of this division were identified, and members of the division were found to exhibit filamentous …

Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Psychology and Child Development
This article explores the ways that mothers and children from primarily middle-income European American backgrounds reason about events in which biological and nonbiological objects change in size. In Study 1, mother–child conversations were examined to investigate the events mothers described as growth, as well as the ways mothers explained events occurring in different domains. Findings indicate that although mothers primarily discussed events in domain-specific ways, they exhibited some domain blurring in their talk to children. In Study 2,3-year-old children (M = 3 years, 2 months) and 5-year-old children (M = 5 years) provided descriptions and explanations of the same events. …
Removal Of Pcr Inhibitors From Soil Dna By Chemical Flocculation, Michael D. Braid, Laura M. Daniels, Christopher L. Kitts
Removal Of Pcr Inhibitors From Soil Dna By Chemical Flocculation, Michael D. Braid, Laura M. Daniels, Christopher L. Kitts
Biological Sciences
Extracting high-purity DNA directly from soil has become essential for the study of microorganisms in environmental samples. However, many soils contain compounds that inhibit enzymes involved in manipulating DNA. In this study, chemical flocculation using multivalent cations was investigated as a potential method for eliminating soil-based inhibitors during the extraction process. The addition of AlNH4(SO4)2 during extraction significantly reduced the co-purification of PCR inhibitors with minimal loss of DNA yield.

Canadian Child Welfare: System Design Dimensions And Possibilities For Innovation, Gary Cameron, Nancy Colleen Freymond
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
Ontario child welfare is entering territory where other countries have gone before. A decade earlier, jurisdictions in England, the United States and Australia implemented similar reforms and, not coincidentally, encountered comparable difficulties, creating high levels of dissatisfaction among service users and service providers. Our contention is that such frustrations are inherent consequences of the underpinnings of the “Anglo-American child protection paradigm”. To do better, it is helpful to look for ideas outside of what is familiar and to consider how useful approaches from other jurisdictions might be adapted to a Canadian context. There are two primary focuses for this paper: …

Mass Transfer And Benzene Removal From Air Using Latex Rubber Tubing And A Hollow-Fiber Membrane Module, Mark W. Fitch, Jeffrey Neeman, Ellen England
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A Dense-Phase Latex Rubber Tube and a Polyporous Propylene Hollow-Fiber Membrane Module (HFMM) Were Investigated for Control of Benzene-Contaminated Gas Streams. the Abiotic Mass Flux Observed through the Latex Tube Was 3.9-13 Mg/(Min·m2) for 150 Ppm of Benzene at Various Gas and Liquid Flow Rates, While a 100-Fold Lower Mass Flux Was Observed in the HFMM. after Seeding with an Aromatic-Degrading Culture Enriched from Activated Sludge, the Observed Removal Was 80% of 150 Ppm, Corresponding to a Mass Flux of 45 Mg/(Min·m2). the Observed Mass Flux through the HFMM during Biofiltration Also Rose, to 0.4 Mg/(Min·m2). Because the HFMM Had …

In an open letter published last year in the New York Times, 21 distinguished scientists (including three Nobel laureates) criticized Japan's program of scientific research whaling, noting its poor design and unjustified reliance upon lethal sampling. In a recent Forum article in BioScience, Aron, Burke, and Freeman (2002) castigate the letter's signers and accuse them of meddling in political issues without sufficient knowledge of the science involved in those issues.
