The Vascular Plant Flora Of The Tennessee River Gardens Area, Amanda Erin King Mar 2003

The Vascular Plant Flora Of The Tennessee River Gardens Area, Amanda Erin King

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project was to identify all native and introduced vascular plant species near the Tennessee River Gardens. The field work resulted in 355 specimens that represent 81 families, 190 genera, and 268 species. In addition to collecting and identifying, I also compared my flora with that of Lookout Mountain Park to determine the degree of similarity between the two sites which are both south of the Tennessee River. Another comparison was completed contrasting my flora with the flora of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The biotic similarity data I compiled are presented along with the biotic …

Common Raven Nests In Eastern Kentucky, John J. Cox, Nathan W. Seward, Jeffrey L. Larkin, David S. Maehr Mar 2003

Common Raven Nests In Eastern Kentucky, John J. Cox, Nathan W. Seward, Jeffrey L. Larkin, David S. Maehr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Although ravens were once widespread throughout Appalachia they are now considered threatened or endangered in many states of the region. We document a nesting pair of common ravens in an area of southeastern Kentucky nearly 50 km northwest of traditional nesting sites. Further, we suggest several factors that may have influenced the patterns of raven abundance in the state and offer management recommendations to assist their recovery.

Historical And Recent Records And First Nest Records Of Henslow's Sparrow In North Dakota, Jill A. Shaffer, Lawrence D. Igl, Frédérick Vanhove Mar 2003

Historical And Recent Records And First Nest Records Of Henslow's Sparrow In North Dakota, Jill A. Shaffer, Lawrence D. Igl, Frédérick Vanhove

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The northwestern limit of the Henslow's sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) breeding distribution occurs in southern Minnesota and central Wisconsin. In North Dakota, observations of Henslow's sparrows are reported infrequently, and there are no published nest records in the state. Herein, we summarize and review previous reports of Henslow's sparrows in North Dakota and document the first two nest records of Henslow's sparrow in the state.

An Iterative Loop Matching Approach To The Prediction Of Rna Secondary Structures With Pseudoknots, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang Mar 2003

An Iterative Loop Matching Approach To The Prediction Of Rna Secondary Structures With Pseudoknots, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Motivation: Pseudoknots have generally been excluded from the prediction of RNA secondary structures due to the difficulty in modeling and complexity in computing. Although several dynamic programming algorithms exist for the prediction of pseudoknots using thermodynamic approaches, they are neither reliable nor efficient. On the other hand, comparative methods are more reliable, but are often done in an ad hoc manner and require expert intervention. Maximum weighted matching (Tabaska et. al, Bioinformatics, 14:691-9, 1998), an algorithm for pseudoknot prediction with comparative analysis, suffers from low prediction accuracy in many cases. Here we present an algorithm, iterative loop matching, for predict-ing …

Grain Boundary Scars And Spherical Crystallography, Mark Bowick, A. R. Bausch Mar 2003

Grain Boundary Scars And Spherical Crystallography, Mark Bowick, A. R. Bausch

Physics - All Scholarship

We describe experimental investigations of the structure of two-dimensional spherical crystals. The crystals, formed by beads self-assembled on water droplets in oil, serve as model systems for exploring very general theories about the minimum energy configurations of particles with arbitrary repulsive interactions on curved surfaces. Above a critical system size we find that crystals develop distinctive high-angle grain boundaries, or scars, not found in planar crystals. The number of excess defects in a scar is shown to grow linearly with the dimensionless system size. The observed slope is expected to be universal, independent of the microscopic potential.

Feminist Identity And Social Tolerance Of Mental Illness: The Influence Of Gender-Role Deviance, Susan Eileen Hamilton Mar 2003

Feminist Identity And Social Tolerance Of Mental Illness: The Influence Of Gender-Role Deviance, Susan Eileen Hamilton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the influence of feminist identity on social tolerance of mental illness, specifically, the extent to which people with gender deviant mental illnesses (i.e. men with depression, women with antisocial personality disorder) are socially tolerated. Male and female subjects (N=260) were given the Feminist Perspectives Scale and six character vignettes describing a person with a mental illness followed by a series of questions. Subjects received a score on six subscales of the FPS (conservative, liberal feminism, radical feminism, cultural feminism, socialist feminism, and woman of color feminism), which were compared to their social tolerance scores. Results suggested that …

Asthma and mouse models of allergic respiratory inflammation are invariably associated with a pulmonary eosinophilia; however, this association has remained correlative. In this report, a causative relationship between eosinophils and allergen-provoked pathologies was established using eosinophil adoptive transfer. Eosinophils were transferred directly into the lungs of either naive or OVA-treated IL-5-/- mice. This strategy resulted in a pulmonary eosinophilia equivalent to that observed in OVA-treated wild-type animals. A concomitant consequence of this eosinophil transfer was an increase in Th2 bronchoalveolar lavage cytokine levels and the restoration of intracellular epithelial mucus in OVA-treated IL-5-/- mice equivalent to OVA-treated wild-type levels. Moreover, …

Fc177, A Minor Dec-1 Proprotein, Is Necessary To Prevent Ectopic Aggregation Of The Endochorion During Eggshell Assembly In Drosophila, Debra Kay Mauzy-Melitz, Gail L. Waring Mar 2003

Fc177, A Minor Dec-1 Proprotein, Is Necessary To Prevent Ectopic Aggregation Of The Endochorion During Eggshell Assembly In Drosophila, Debra Kay Mauzy-Melitz, Gail L. Waring

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The Drosophila eggshell is a highly specialized extracellular matrix that forms between the oocyte and the surrounding epithelial follicle cells during late oogenesis. The dec-1 gene, which is required for proper eggshell assembly, produces three proproteins that are cleaved within the vitelline membrane layer to multiple derivatives. The different spatial distributions of the cleaved derivatives suggest that they play distinct roles in eggshell assembly. Using extant dec-1 mutations in conjunction with genetically engineered dec-1 transgenes, we show that, although all three dec-1 proproteins, fc106, fc125, and fc177, are required for female fertility, gross morphological abnormalities in the eggshell are observed …

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee Mar 2003

Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis Of Avhrr Sea Surface Temperature Patterns In Taiwan Strait, Ming-An Lee, Ching-Dong Yeah, Chao-Hsiung Cheng, Jui-Wen Chan, Kuo-Tien Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was used to study a time-series of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imageries from the waters of Taiwan Strait to examine the temporal and spatial characteristics and to determine the dominant pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) variability for 72 months from January 1996 to December 2001. The spatial variance was consistent with a quasi-permanent front at the Chang-Yuen Ridge in winter and associated with strong temperature contrast to the Kuroshio branch or the South China Sea Warm Current. It also displayed a cool water plume extending from the Peng-Hu Islands to Formosa …

Mapping The Galpha13 Binding Interface Of The Rgrgs Domain Of P115rhogef, Zhe Chen, William D. Singer, Clark D. Wells, Stephen R. Sprang, Paul C. Sternweis

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Structural requirements for function of the Rho GEF (guanine nucleotide exchange factor) regulator of G protein signaling (rgRGS) domains of p115RhoGEF and homologous exchange factors differ from those of the classical RGS domains. An extensive mutagenesis analysis of the p115RhoGEF rgRGS domain was undertaken to determine its functional interface with the Galpha(13) subunit. Results indicate that there is global resemblance between the interaction surface of the rgRGS domain with Galpha(13) and the interactions of RGS4 and RGS9 with their Galpha substrates. However, there are distinct differences in the distribution of functionally critical residues between these structurally similar surfaces and an …

Role Of Proapoptotic Bax In Propagation Of Chlamydia Muridarum (The Mouse Pneumonitis Strain Of Chlamydia Trachomatis) And The Host Inflammatory Response, Jean-Luc Perfettini, David M. Ojcius, Charles W. Andrews Jr., Stanley J. Korsmeyer, Roger G. Rank, Toni Darville Mar 2003

Role Of Proapoptotic Bax In Propagation Of Chlamydia Muridarum (The Mouse Pneumonitis Strain Of Chlamydia Trachomatis) And The Host Inflammatory Response, Jean-Luc Perfettini, David M. Ojcius, Charles W. Andrews Jr., Stanley J. Korsmeyer, Roger G. Rank, Toni Darville

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The BCL-2 family member BAX plays a critical role in regulating apoptosis. Surprisingly, bax-deficient mice display limited phenotypic abnormalities. Here we investigate the effect of BAX on infection by the sexually transmitted pathogen,Chlamydia muridarum (the mouse pneumonitis strain ofChlamydia trachomatis). Bax −/−cells are relatively resistant to Chlamydia-induced apoptosis, and fewer bacteria are recovered after two infection cycles from Bax −/− cells than from wild-type cells. These results suggest that BAX-dependent apoptosis may be used to initiate a new round of infection, most likely by releasingChlamydia-containing apoptotic bodies from infected cells that could be internalized by neighboring uninfected cells. Nonetheless, infected …

Hazard Vulnerability In Socio-Economic Context: An Example From Ecuador, Lucille Richards Lane Mar 2003

Hazard Vulnerability In Socio-Economic Context: An Example From Ecuador, Lucille Richards Lane

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

How people pereceive the risks associated with natural hazards contributes to their willingness to take protective action. Such action may be constrained by prevailing socio-economic and place-specific conditions that restrict or inform the choice of protective measures available to the individual. Vulnerability to the impacts of extreme geophysical events increases when the range of alternatives is limited or misinformed.

Many evacuees from a potentially violent volcanic eruption in Ecuador returned to their home town of Banos while it was still under an evacuation order in 2000 and considered to be a high risk area by officials. The research examined four …
