The Anchor, Volume 117.01: April 23, 2003, Hope College

The Anchor: 2003

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

In Silico Analysis Of A Fl Avohemoglobin From Sinorhizobium Meliloti Strain 1021, Veronica Lira-Ruan, Gautam Sarath, Robert Klucas, Raul Arredondo-Peter

Gautam Sarath Publications

Hemoglobins (Hbs) have been characterized from a wide variety of eubacteria, but not from nitrogenfi xing rhizobia. Our search for Hb-like sequences in the Sinorhizobium meliloti genome revealed that a gene coding for a fl avohemoglobin (fHb) exists in S. meliloti (SmfHb). Computer analysis showed that SmfHb and Alcaligenes eutrophus fHb are highly similar and could fold into the same tertiary structure. A FNR-like box was detected upstream of the smfhb gene and mapping analy sis revealed that the smfhb gene is flanked by nos and fix genes. These observations suggest that smfhb is regulated by the concentration of …

Taming The Rugged Landscape: Techniques For The Production, Reordering, And Stabilization Of Selected Cluster Inherent Structures, Dubravko Sabo, J. D. Doll, David L. Freeman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report our studies of the potential energy surface (PES)of selected binary Lennard-Jones clusters. The effect of adding selected impurity atoms to a homogeneous cluster is explored. Inherent structures and transition states are found by combination of conjugate gradient and eigenvector-following methods while the topography of the PES is mapped with the help of a disconnectivity analysis. We show that we can controllably induce new structures as well as reorder and stabilize existing structures that are characteristic of higher-lying minima.

Apparatus For Decoupled Thermo-Photocatalytic Pollution Control (Div), Ali Raissi Apr 2003

Apparatus For Decoupled Thermo-Photocatalytic Pollution Control (Div), Ali Raissi

UCF Patents

A new method for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to photo-thermocatalytic reactor design and scale-up. At low irradiance levels, the method is based on the implementation of low pressure drop biopolymeric and synthetic polymeric support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap media. At high irradiance levels, the method utilizes multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media within a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.
