Quorum Sensing In Plant-Pathogenic Bacteria, Susanne B. Von Bodman, W. Dietz Bauer, David L. Coplin Apr 2003

Quorum Sensing In Plant-Pathogenic Bacteria, Susanne B. Von Bodman, W. Dietz Bauer, David L. Coplin

Plant Science Articles

Quorum sensing (QS) allows bacteria to assess their local population density and/or physical confinement via the secretion and detection of small, diffusible signal molecules. This review describes how phytopathogenic bacteria have incorporated QS mechanisms into complex regulatory cascades that control genes for pathogenicity and colonization of host surfaces. Traits regulated by QS include the production of extracellular polysaccharides, degradative enzymes, antibiotics, siderophores, and pigments, as well as Hrp protein secretion, Ti plasmid transfer, motility, biofilm formation, and epiphytic fitness. Since QS regulatory systems are often required for pathogenesis, interference with QS signaling may offer a means of controlling bacterial diseases …

How Can Technology Be Used To Improve Instruction And Student Learning?, Frank Corley Apr 2003

How Can Technology Be Used To Improve Instruction And Student Learning?, Frank Corley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to research techniques for integrating technology into the curriculum in order to improve the learning of the students. This was accomplished through analyzing material submitted by the Clearview Middle School's teachers and through the research of the intern. Four different requests for technology information were distributed to the teachers. Only 10% of the teachers submitted material for the handbook. The limited amount of information received after the requests resulted in a technology questionnaire that was used to define the teachers' technology aptitudes and determine how technology was being utilized in the school. The results …

Use Of Combinatorial Genetic Libraries To Humanize N-Linked Glycosylation In The Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Byung-Kwon Choi, Piotr Bobrowicz, Robert C. Davidson, Stephen R. Hamilton, David Kung, Huijuan Li, Robert Miele, Juergen Nett, Stefan Wildt, Tillman Gerngross Apr 2003

Use Of Combinatorial Genetic Libraries To Humanize N-Linked Glycosylation In The Yeast Pichia Pastoris, Byung-Kwon Choi, Piotr Bobrowicz, Robert C. Davidson, Stephen R. Hamilton, David Kung, Huijuan Li, Robert Miele, Juergen Nett, Stefan Wildt, Tillman Gerngross

Dartmouth Scholarship

The secretory pathway of Pichia pastoris was genetically re-engineered to perform sequential glycosylation reactions that mimic early processing of N-glycans in humans and other higher mammals. After eliminating nonhuman glycosylation by deleting the initiating alpha-1,6-mannosyltransferase gene from P. pastoris, several combinatorial genetic libraries were constructed to localize active alpha-1,2-mannosidase and human beta-1,2-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (GnTI) in the secretory pathway. First, >32 N-terminal leader sequences of fungal type II membrane proteins were cloned to generate a leader library. Two additional libraries encoding catalytic domains of alpha-1,2-mannosidases and GnTI from mammals, insects, amphibians, worms, and fungi were cloned to generate catalytic domain libraries. …

Evidence For Survival Of Pleistocene Climatic Changes In Northern Refugia By The Land Snail Trochoidea Geyeri, David Posada, Markus Pfenninger, Frederic Magnin Apr 2003

Evidence For Survival Of Pleistocene Climatic Changes In Northern Refugia By The Land Snail Trochoidea Geyeri, David Posada, Markus Pfenninger, Frederic Magnin

Faculty Publications

The study of organisms with restricted dispersal abilities and presence in the fossil record is particularly adequate to understand the impact of climate changes on the distribution and genetic structure of species. Trochoidea geyeri (Soos 1926) is a land snail restricted to a patchy, insular distribution in Germany and France. Fossil evidence suggests that current populations of T. geyeri are relicts of a much more widespread distribution during more favourable climatic periods in the Pleistocene. Results: Phylogeographic analysis of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear ITS-1 sequence variation was used to infer the history of the remnant populations of T. …

Genetic Changes Within An Aphid Clone: Homogenization Of Rdna Intergenic Spacers After Insecticide Selection, Kevin A. Shufran, Z. B. Mayo, Teresa Crease Apr 2003

Genetic Changes Within An Aphid Clone: Homogenization Of Rdna Intergenic Spacers After Insecticide Selection, Kevin A. Shufran, Z. B. Mayo, Teresa Crease

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A single asexual maternal lineage (i.e. clone) of the greenbug aphid, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) was repeatedly selected with the insecticide disulfoton (O,O-diethyl S-[2-(ethylthio)ethyl] phosphorodioate). A parallel colony of the non-selected clone was also maintained. After approximately 200 generations (4 years) of continuous selection, both the selected and non-selected clones were assayed for changes in intergenic spacer (IGS) length variants of the rRNA cistron. No changes in sets of IGS variants were detected in the non-selected clone. However, the selected clone was found to have lost three variants present in the non-selected clone. This probably occurred by unequal …

Induced Resistance As A Mechanism Of Biological Control By Lysobacter Enzymogenes Strain C3, Ozlem Kilic-Ekici, Gary Y. Yuen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Induced resistance was found to be a mechanism for biological control of leaf spot, caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) using the bacterium Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3. Resistance elicited by C3 suppressed germination of B. sorokiniana conidia on the phylloplane in addition to reducing the severity of leaf spot. The pathogen-inhibitory effect could be separated from antibiosis by using heat-inactivated cells of C3 that retained no antifungal activity. Application of live or heat-killed cells to tall fescue leaves resulted only in localized resistance confined to the treated leaf, whereas treatment of roots resulted in …

Offspring Contributions To Household Economy By Age And Sex Among The Khasi Of N.E. India, D. B. Neill, D. L. Leonetti, D. C. Nath, N. S. Hemam Apr 2003

Offspring Contributions To Household Economy By Age And Sex Among The Khasi Of N.E. India, D. B. Neill, D. L. Leonetti, D. C. Nath, N. S. Hemam

Social Sciences

Productive work or alloparenting by offspring appears to be dependent on the environmental context and subsistence strategy of a society as well as the need for such labor. We ask if gender as well as age are associated with work activities in our study subjects (n=1455 offspring) of Khasi families in N. E. India who have traditionally been swidden agriculturalists and now live in a mixed subsistence/cash economy. Fertility is fairly high (Total Fertility Rate = 6.7 children) and offspring often remain in the parental home into adult ages so offspring contributions to domestic work, child care and agriculture may …
