The objective of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of St. John's Wort compared to fluoxetine from a third party perspective for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Fluoxetine 20 mg daily was compared to St. John's Wort 300 mg thrice daily in a decision tree modeling depression management in the outpatient setting. Probabilities were obtained from a Medline search as well as input from an expert panel. Direct medical costs were obtained from medical offices in the Connecticut area with drug and herb cost based on 2002 published data. Several sensitivity analyses were performed. The cost-effectiveness ratio …

Wildlife Use And Habitat Quality Of Back Channel Areas Associated With Islands On The Ohio River, West Virginia, Andrew Karl Zadnik May 2003

Wildlife Use And Habitat Quality Of Back Channel Areas Associated With Islands On The Ohio River, West Virginia, Andrew Karl Zadnik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The islands and associated back channels on the Ohio River have long been thought to provide important habitat characteristics for riparian wildlife. However, few studies have quantitatively evaluated this importance. As pressure continues to develop back channel areas for commercial and residential use, quantitative information is vital for natural resource managers to justify conserving these areas for wildlife. The goals of my study were to quantify wildlife use of back and main channels relative to waterbirds, anurans, turtles, and riparian furbearing mammals, and to evaluate the habitat quality of back and main channels through the use of habitat suitability index …

Studies On The Effects Of Propanil On Macrophage Function And Signaling, Laura Lynn Frost May 2003

Studies On The Effects Of Propanil On Macrophage Function And Signaling, Laura Lynn Frost

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Propanil has been shown to induce numerous manifestations of impaired immune responses. This dissertation focuses on the effects of propanil on TNF-alpha production and NFB activation in murine and human macrophages in response to LPS stimulation. Initial studies demonstrated that propanil treatment of the murine peritoneal macrophage cell line, IC-21 resulted in decreased NF-kappaB activation and transcriptional activity as determined by Western blot and NF-kappaB-dependent reporter gene transcription, respectively. Nuclear localization of NF-kappaB was also shown to be decreased by immunofluorescence. Additional studies to confirm these effects in the human cell line, THP-1 also showed decreased nuclear levels of NF-kappaB …

Population Dynamics Of Selected Lepidoptera Associated With Gypsy Moth [Lymantria Dispar (L.)] In Central Appalachia, Sandra Raimondo May 2003

Population Dynamics Of Selected Lepidoptera Associated With Gypsy Moth [Lymantria Dispar (L.)] In Central Appalachia, Sandra Raimondo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite the wealth of research conducted on gypsy moth [(Lymantria dispar L.)(Lymantriidae: Lepidoptera)] populations dynamics, quantitative analysis of the native lepidopteran community in which gypsy moth has become naturalized is extremely limited. This study examined the population dynamics of native Lepidoptera in two gypsy moth management areas in West Virginia and Virginia. Data were collected between 1995 and 2001 on 18 plots distributed on two national forests (Monongahela National Forest, WV and George Washington National Forest, VA). Four lepidopteran sampling techniques (gypsy moth egg mass surveys, canvas bands and foliage clippings for larval sampling, and light trap samples for adults) …

Children As Chattel: Invoking The Thirteenth Amendment To Reform Child Welfare, Kurt Mundorff May 2003

Children As Chattel: Invoking The Thirteenth Amendment To Reform Child Welfare, Kurt Mundorff

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note argues that the child welfare system perpetuates systemic oppression and commodification of children, particularly targeting African American and poor families, mirroring the exploitation of slavery. The author contends that the Thirteenth Amendment, which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude, should be invoked to reform this system. The current system prioritizes intervention and removal over support, leading to harm and perpetuating racial and economic disparities. The author advocates for a balanced approach that protects children while addressing the systemic exploitation and racial control embedded in the foster care system.

International Law And The Pre-Emptive Use Of Force: Afghanistan, Al-Qaida, And Iraq, Christopher Greenwood

San Diego International Law Journal

This Article will review the legal framework on the use of force and suggest that there are cases in which the use of "preemptive force" may be justified, provided that certain important conditions are satisfied. Parts III and IV will then apply this analysis to the two cases that have focused attention on the whole issue of preemptive action, namely, the threat from international terrorism (Part III) and the situation in Iraq (Part IV). The writer's conclusions are summarized in Part V.

Affixing Blame: Ideologies Of Hiv/Aids In Thailand, Tarik Abdel-Monem

San Diego International Law Journal

This Article focuses on ideologies of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Thailand, one of many nations where the HIV/AIDS pandemic has reached alarming levels. Not unlike other nations struggling with HIV/AIDS, an epidemic of stigma and blame has developed in Thailand with increasing rates of infection among the population. Understandings of whom to blame for the epidemic, and how to realize appropriate solutions, have likewise developed as the epidemic continues to persist and spread. This Article examines these ideologies and how they are mediated through the lens of popular culture in contemporary Thailand. It attempts to examine the reasoning of such …

Finding Fundamental Fairness: Protecting The Rights Of Homosexuals Under European Union Accession Law, Travis J. Langenkamp May 2003

Finding Fundamental Fairness: Protecting The Rights Of Homosexuals Under European Union Accession Law, Travis J. Langenkamp

San Diego International Law Journal

In tackling the issue of sexual orientation discrimination, the European Union must make significant efforts to conform or, perhaps, eradicate incongruous legislation within Applicant Countries. The difficulty of this endeavor is two-fold: first, in terms of the number and complexity of the laws of each Applicant Country; and, second, in the absence of any detailed and systematic documentation of sexual orientation discrimination within those same Applicant Countries. Compounding, if not confounding, such legitimate endeavors are the inconsistent anti-gay legislation prevalent within the present Member States. The stakes are high for Member States and Applicant Countries alike. Thus, the European Union's …

Seasonal Movement And Macro-Habitat Use Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) In An Ohio River Navigation Pool, Jason Gregory Freund

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Largemouth bass provide an important recreational fishery in the Ohio River. Our objectives were to determine critical over-wintering and spawning habitats of largemouth bass in the Belleville Pool of the Ohio River. We surgically implanted radio-transmitters in 39 adult largemouth bass and tracked them over a 23-month period. Our results demonstrate the importance of off-channel habitats in the life history of largemouth bass in large river systems. Sedimentation, resulting in a loss of embayment quality and surface area, is an important problem and thus merits increased attention. Restoration and protection efforts to improve largemouth bass fisheries in large river systems …

The Applicability, Apprpriateness, And Enforcement Of The "Background Levels" Standard For Contaminated Sediment Cleanup Under California State Water Resources Control Board Resolution 92-49, Benjamin Benumof

San Diego Law Review

This Comment discusses the problem of contaminated sediments in ports and waterways and the scientific, technological, legal, and regulatory barriers to fixing the problem. The author begins by addressing whether California State Water Resources Control Board Resolution 92-49 is applicable to establishing cleanup levels for contaminated marine bay bottom sediments. Next, the author assumes that Resolution 92-49 is applicable and examines the boundaries of its enforcement and limitations of it application. The author then explores what standards Regional Boards might use for cleanup level decisions of bay bottom sediments if Resolution 92-49 was not applicable. The author then addresses whether …

Millions of people suffer from medical conditions that should be made known to healthcare practitioners prior to treatment. Paramedics and emergency room doctors cannot provide optimal care without sufficient knowledge of a patient’s medical history. Lacking patient information such as allergies, current prescriptions, and preexisting conditions, medical professionals are often forced to either delay treatment or rely on instincts. Medical mistakes in situations like these kill thousands of people and cost an estimated US$37 billion each year in the United States [1]. With the advent of electronic medical records (EMRs), patient information can be stored in computer databases at hospitals …

Remotely Forced Nearshore Upwelling In Southern California, James M. Pringle, K Riser Apr 2003

Remotely Forced Nearshore Upwelling In Southern California, James M. Pringle, K Riser

Earth Sciences

[1] Alongshore winds in Baja California strongly influence nearshore temperatures hundreds of kilometers to the north at Point Loma, San Diego, California, on timescales of a week to a year. The time lag between wind and temperature is consistent with first mode coastal trapped wave phase speed. The nearshore cross-shelf circulation forced by the coastal trapped waves is, at least much of the year, oppositely directed at the surface and bottom. No relation is found between the winds and temperature for periods greater than a year. It is argued that similar results may be found elsewhere in the Southern California …
