Perilipin A Is Essential For The Translocation Of Hormone-Sensitive Lipase During Lipolytic Activation. J Cell Biol, John Tansey

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

A key step in lipolytic activation of adipocytes is the translocation of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) from the cytosol to the surface of the lipid storage droplet. Adipocytes from perilipin -null animals have an elevated basal rate of lipolysis compared with adipocytes from wild-type mice, but fail to respond maximally to lipolytic stimuli. This defect is downstream of the -adrenergic receptor–adenylyl cyclase complex. Now, we show that HSL is basally associated with lipid droplet surfaces at a low level in perilipin nulls, but that stimulated translocation from the cytosol to lipid droplets is absent in adipocytes derived from embryonic fibroblasts of …

Getting Control Of Your Money #2: Tracking Your Income And Expenses The Budget Register Way, Liz Gorham, Jack Davis

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Of the different methods to track your income and expenses, some are detailed and time consuming and some are simple and quick. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The Budget Register Method is a comprehensive yet simple and fast method. At any time during the month, the register shows exactly how much you have spent, or have left to spend, in each expense category. (If another tracking method would be better for you, see Extension Extra 14079.)

Optimization Of High-Strength Hydrocarbon Biodegradation Using Respirometry, Bunkim G. Chokshi, Yarrow M. Nelson Jun 2003

Optimization Of High-Strength Hydrocarbon Biodegradation Using Respirometry, Bunkim G. Chokshi, Yarrow M. Nelson

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Laboratory respirometry experiments were conducted on mixtures of soil and oily sludge to estimate biodegradation rates by CO2 production rates and determine optimum conditions for biodegradation of high-strength hydrocarbon waste products. These experiments were used to determine a suitable range of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration for biological treatment and to optimize for nutrient addition and moisture content. CO2 production rates from biological respiration of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil were maximized at concentrations of 3-9% TPH (30,00090,000 mg/kg TPH). CO2 production rates decreased dramatically at concentrations above 9% TPH, indicating that either these concentrations are lethal to microbes present, …

The International Political Ecology Of Industrial Shrimp Aquaculture And Industrial Plantation Forestry In Southeast Asia, Derek Hall Jun 2003

The International Political Ecology Of Industrial Shrimp Aquaculture And Industrial Plantation Forestry In Southeast Asia, Derek Hall

Political Science Faculty Publications

This paper compares the trajectories over the last two decades of two export-oriented ‘boom crops’ in Southeast Asia: indsturial shrimp aquaculture and industrial plantation forestry. It focuses on differences in the establishment, operation and politics of these sectors to explain why they have experienced very different kinds of ‘booms.’

Habitat-Predator Association And Avoidance In Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.), Culum Brown Jun 2003

Habitat-Predator Association And Avoidance In Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia Spp.), Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

The ability to recall the location of a predator and later avoid it was tested in nine populations of rainbowfish (Melanotaenia spp.), representing three species from a variety of environments. Following the introduction of a model predator into a particular microhabitat, the model was removed, the arena rotated and the distribution of the fish recorded again. In this manner it could be determined what cues the fish relied on in order to recall the previous location of the predator model. Fish from all populations but one (Dirran Creek) were capable of avoiding the predator by remembering either the location and/or …

Considering Animals—Not “Higher” Primates, Marc Bekoff Jun 2003

Considering Animals—Not “Higher” Primates, Marc Bekoff

Sentience Collection

In this essay I argue that many nonhuman animal beings are conscious and have some sense of self. Rather than ask whether they are conscious, I adopt an evolutionary perspective and ask why consciousness and a sense of self evolved—what are they good for? Comparative studies of animal cognition, ethological investigations that explore what it is like to be a certain animal, are useful for answering this question. Charles Darwin argued that the differences in cognitive abilities and emotions among animals are differences in degree rather than differences in kind, and his view cautions against the unyielding claim that humans, …

Bioassessment Of The West Fork Of The White River, Northwest Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Andrea J. Radwell, Robin A. Reese Jun 2003

Bioassessment Of The West Fork Of The White River, Northwest Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Andrea J. Radwell, Robin A. Reese

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The West Fork-White River has been and continues to be an important water resource for northwest Arkansas. It is used recreationally for fishing and swimming, agriculturally as a source of water for livestock and irrigation of crops, it is mined for gravel, used as a receiving stream for municipal wastewater effluent, and contributes to Beaver Lake which provides water for treatment and distribution to most of northwest Arkansas. While these uses have benefited a large segment of the Arkansas population, they have also contributed to the decline in environmental quality of the river. To facilitate the development of appropriate management …

A 59-Cobalt Nmr Investigation Of The Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange Kinetics In Cobalt(Iii) Complexes, Michelle Mccombs Jun 2003

A 59-Cobalt Nmr Investigation Of The Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange Kinetics In Cobalt(Iii) Complexes, Michelle Mccombs

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Currently, the hydrogen/deuterium exchange kinetics in cobalt(III) complexes are being investigated. In the presence of deuterated solvents, (e.g. D2 0 and CH3CH20D) the amine hydrogens in the complexes are exchanged for deuteriums. For the hexaamminecobalt(III) ion, 19 isotopmers (H18D0 to HOD 18) are possible. For the tris(ethylenediammine)cobalt(III) ion, 13 isotopmers (HI 2D0 to HOD 12) are possible. Each hydrogen/deuteruim exchange causes a shift in the observed 59Co resonance of approximately 6 ppm. The rate constant of the hydrogen-deuterium exchange for the first H-D exchange has been determined as a function of solvent. When the chosen solvent is D20, the rate …

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films With Interacting Magnetic Particles, Jian Qing Wang, Zhi Dong Zhao, Scott L. Whittenburg Jun 2003

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films With Interacting Magnetic Particles, Jian Qing Wang, Zhi Dong Zhao, Scott L. Whittenburg

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Interparticle interaction among single domain nanosize magnetic particles embedded in nonmagnetic matrix was studied. Attention was paid to concentrated Cu–Co granular thin films with a fixed magnetic volume fraction (20%). By analyzing theoretical models and comparing with experimental results, a dimensional constraint on the magnetic properties was found. As the film thickness reduces toward the thin limit the interparticle interaction plays important roles in modifying the magnetic behavior. The dipolar interaction energy was calculated among magnetic particles including far-neighbor interaction for films with different thickness values. When magnetization variation is included in the calculation, the resulting calculated interaction energy versus …

Differences In Cottonwood Growth Between A Losing And A Gaining Reach Of An Alluvial Floodplain, Mary J. Harner, Jack Arthur Stanford Jun 2003

Differences In Cottonwood Growth Between A Losing And A Gaining Reach Of An Alluvial Floodplain, Mary J. Harner, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Interstitial flow of river (hyporheic) water influences algal productivity, benthic assemblages, and locations of fish spawning. However, little is known of the effects of hyporheic flow on the growth of riparian vegetation. By increasing water availability and nutrient delivery, regional upwelling of hyporheic water may increase the growth of terrestrial vegetation. We tested and accepted the hypothesis that cottonwood trees (Populus trichocarpa) in a gaining reach of an alluvial floodplain grow faster than trees in a losing reach by comparing basal areas and ages on an expansive floodplain in western Montana (USA). Trees in the gaining reach had …
