The Rebirth Of Bioethics: Extending The Original Formulations Of Van Rensselaer Potter, Peter J. Whitehouse

Van Rensselaer Potter's original concept of bioethics as a global integration of biology and values was designed to guide human survival. His attention to the creation of human knowledge and the incorporation of ecological concepts and values into medicine and health remain important, yet largely neglected, contributions deserving of further elaboration. Bioethicists should heed his warning about unsustainable progress, particularly in health care systems, and work toward changing their behaviors. Incorporating life-affirming spiritual values and extending Potter's global bioethics to a deeper bioethics seem essential.

Effects Of Early Acoustic Stimulation On Prepulse Inhibition In Mice, Lisa Tanner

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an atypical pattern of early acoustic stimulation on auditory development. Previous human research suggests that the acoustic environment of pre-term human infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) negatively affects some aspects of auditory development. Animal research suggests that premature auditory stimulation interrupts auditory development. Because mice are born before their auditory systems are developed, they make an excellent model for research on fetal and postnatal plasticity of the auditory system. Current statistical inference problems in genomic data analysis involve parameter estimation for high-dimensional multivariate distributions, with typically unknown and intricate correlation patterns among variables. Addressing these inference questions satisfactorily requires: (i) an intensive and thorough search of the parameter space to generate good candidate estimators, (ii) an approach for selecting an optimal estimator among these candidates, and (iii) a method for reliably assessing the performance of the resulting estimator. We propose a unified loss-based methodology for estimator construction, selection, and performance assessment with cross-validation. A Subgroup Algorithm To Identify Cross-Rotation Peaks Consistent With Non-Crystallographic Symmetry, Ryan H. Lilien, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Amy C. Anderson, Bruce R. Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

Molecular replacement (MR) often plays a prominent role in determining initial phase angles for structure determination by X-ray crystallography. In this paper, an efficient quaternion-based algorithm is presented for analyzing peaks from a cross-rotation function to identify model orientations consistent with non-crystallographic symmetry (NCS), and to generate NCS-consistent orientations missing from the list of cross-rotation peaks. Our algorithm, CRANS, analyzes the rotation differences between each pair of cross-rotation peaks to identify finite subgroups of NCS. Sets of rotation differences satisfying the subgroup axioms correspond to orientations compatible with the correct NCS. The CRANS algorithm was first tested using cross-rotation peaks …

Osteopontin Inhibits Interleukin-1Β-Stimulated Increases In Matrix Metalloproteinase Activity In Adult Rat Cardiac Fibroblasts: Role Of Protein Kinase C-Ζ, Zhonglin Xie, Mahipal Singh, Deborah A. Siwik, William L. Joyner, Krishna Singh

We have shown that osteopontin (OPN), an extracellular matrix protein, plays an important role in post myocardial infarction (MI) remodeling by promoting collagen synthesis and accumulation. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), increased in the heart following MI, increases matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in cardiac fibroblasts in vitro. Here, we show that OPN alone has no effect on MMP activity or expression. However, it reduces IL-1β-stimulated increases in MMP activity and expression in adult rat cardiac fibroblasts. Pretreatment with bovine serum albumin had no effect on MMP activity or protein content, whereas GRGDS (glycine-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-serine)- pentapeptide (which interrupts binding of RGD-containing proteins to cell …

[1] Trace gas and particle emissions were measured from 47 laboratory fires burning 16 regionally to globally significant fuel types. Instrumentation included the following: open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry; filter sampling with subsequent analysis of particles with diameter <2.5 μm for organic and elemental carbon and other elements; and canister sampling with subsequent analysis by gas chromatography (GC)/flame ionization detector, GC/electron capture detector, and GC/mass spectrometry. The emissions of 26 compounds are reported by fuel type. The results include the first detailed measurements of the emissions from Indonesian fuels. Carbon dioxide, CO, CH₄, NH₃, HCN, methanol, and acetic acid were the seven most abundant emissions (in order) from burning Indonesian peat. Acetol (hydroxyacetone) was a major, previously unobserved emission from burning rice straw (21–34 g/kg). Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Genotyping is an important molecular genetics process in the early stages of producing results that will be useful in the medical field. Due to inherent complexities in DNA manipulation and analysis, many different methods have been proposed for a standard assay. One of the proposed techniques for performing SNP Genotyping requires amplifying regions of DNA surrounding a large number of SNP loci.
