College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

In 2001, Oral Roberts University launched an honors program. Unlike most honors programs, the ORU program is two-tiered, meaning that the top sixteen to eighteen students in every class are considered fellows and the rest of the students who meet the academic requirements are scholars. ORU requires both fellows and scholars to complete twenty-four hours of honors coursework through designated sections of general education classes. One unique aspect of the program is that the fellows are required to complete five of six special interdisciplinary honors seminars as part of their required twenty-four hours. Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek

Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 44 online journals surveyed, 14 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Nitric Oxide Mediates Seasonal Muscle Potentiation In Clam Gills, Louis F. Gainey Jr., Michael J. Greenberg

Biology

The physiology and timing of gill muscle potentiation were explored in the clam Mercenaria mercenaria. When isolated demibranchs were exposed twice (with an intervening wash) to the same concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine, the second contraction was larger than the first. This potentiation was seasonal: it was present from November through June, and absent from July through October. Potentiation was not affected by the geographic origin of the clams, nor by their acclimation temperature. Potentiation was inhibited by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME and mimicked by the nitric oxide (NO) donor DEANO. During the season of potentiation, immunoreactive NOS appeared …

In this course, students will learn about the nature of international environmental problems and will apply an interdisciplinary set of analytical tools to understand their causes and possible solutions. The course will survey and analyze the actual and potential institutions the international community employs to address these problems.

The course will include several requirements, more fully described below: (a) completing assigned readings before class and participating in class discussions; (b) preparing journal entries; (c) taking a final exam.
