Communication Within The Church: Characteristics Of The Post-Modern Church, Natalie King Jan 2003

Communication Within The Church: Characteristics Of The Post-Modern Church, Natalie King

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In the modem church, all forms of communication are used together in order to create a truly meaningful, religious experience for both believers and non-believers in Christ. Communication and socialization in the form ofspirituality, dynamic leaders, small-group interaction, and a sense of community play an enormous role within the post-modem church and are vital on all levels in order to help people, both churched and unchurched, choose a church as their church home.

Resources Related To Mathematics, Art And Nature, Vicki Beitler

Sabbaticals

The purpose of my sabbatical work was to learn about resources related to mathematics and art, nature, music and architecture. These subjects appeal to a wide audience, yet their mathematical connections are often on the periphery of a mathematics student's studies. In this way I planned to increase my knowledge of mathematics but at the same time broaden my understanding of cross-disciplinary subjects.

Teaching Instrumental Music To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Phillip M. Hash Jan 2003

Teaching Instrumental Music To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Phillip M. Hash

Research & Issues in Music Education

Many Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) individuals have successfully participated in instrumental music programs for over 100 years. In spite of proven success, however, many directors are reluctant to involve students with hearing loss in school bands and orchestras. Reasons may include a lack of knowledge regarding the needs and capabilities of these learners, or the fear that D/HH musicians will negatively impact the performance quality of the ensemble. By becoming familiar with the characteristics and abilities of D/HH students, as well as methods for instructing these individuals, music educators will be better prepared to serve this population. This article provides …

Review Of Gareth Curtis, Ed. Fifteenth-Century Liturgical Music, Iv: Early Masses And Mass-Pairs, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

The volume under review is the latest entry in a slowly unfolding series, entitled Fifteenth-Century Liturgical Music, within the larger Early English Church Music (EECM) enterprise. It follows three previous volumes, namely I: Antiphons and Music for Holy Week and Easter (EECM 8, 1969, ed. Andrew Hughes), II: Four Anonymous Masses (EECM 22, 1979, ed. Margaret Bent) and III: The Brussels Masses (EECM 34, 1989, ed. Gareth Curtis). However, in his Foreword to the present volume, John Caldwell, General Editor of the Early English Church Music Committee of the British Academy, announces that this book heralds a new initiative, inaugurating …

An Investigation Into Printing Industry Demographics, Frank Romano, Marnie Soom Jan 2003

An Investigation Into Printing Industry Demographics, Frank Romano, Marnie Soom

Books

What is the printing industry? The goal of this study is to define the printing industry universe. There are about a dozen major sources of information about the printing industry, only one of which is the Federal Government. Although printing is one of the most documented industries in the United States, each of these sources arrives at a different view for the size and scope of the industry. This report investigates the challenges in developing a meaningful set of criteria for defining and quantifying the printing industry. Using the criteria from 15 points of definition, a database of just under …

Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare Jan 2003

Signs Toward Change: Responding To How Print Advertisements Portray Women And Invent Reality, Kristin Hare

Whittier Scholars Program

This senior project is an art creation of 30 signs that address how the print media portrays women and imbues unrealistic and potentially harmful messages into their advertisements. This study discusses how advertisements contain information that is not obvious from a quick glance, but due to the numerous ads that people digest every day, this information becomes subconsciously absorbed and affects all aspects of one’s life. This study highlights how every aspect of what advertisements convey, intentional or not, matters a great deal and has a huge impact on people’s lives. This project also includes Senior Symposium notes, the aforementioned …

Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen Jan 2003

Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen

Iowa Journal of Communication

In the weeks after 9/11, businesses sought to reconnect with their clients and colleagues through ads in the New York Times, a number of which were framed as letters. Drawing on the literatures of epistolary critique, visual meaning, and rhetorical criticism, we explore the strategy of framing ads as letters. We use Peirce's typology to classify the ads into iconic, indexical or symbolic frames. Our initial assumption that more graphically iconic ads would rely less on textual metaphor and vice versa, is confirmed. Finally, we encourage the consideration of epistolary rhetoric as a critical tool of analysis.

Visualized Narratives: Editorial Cartoonists Respond To 9/11, Janis L. Edwards Jan 2003

Visualized Narratives: Editorial Cartoonists Respond To 9/11, Janis L. Edwards

Iowa Journal of Communication

The violent episodes of September 11th were occasions where visual domains dominated, helping to shape the interpretation of events as an "Attack on America." An examination of the depictive rhetoric used by political cartoonists to place 9/11 in larger interpretive frame works reveals developing narratives of national unity, heroism, and patriotic sacrifice that reflect and contribute to a nationalistic ethos and a nostalgia for a mythic interpretation of terrorist acts as acts of war. The role of editorial cartoons in the construction and maintenance of social and political values is underscored.

Girls’ Literacy In The Progressive Era: Female And American Indian Identity At The Genoa Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The Progressive Era (1870–1930) is marked by several forces that shaped U.S. girls’ literacies, including the success of the common school movement (and coeducational high schools in particular), the progressive reform movement (especially in terms of progressive educators), new technologies of literacy and print media, women’s leadership in social welfare legislation, and the proliferation of women’s clubs and civic groups. All these forces shaped girls’ reading and writ ing practices in both constraining and empowering ways. In this chapter, I examine girls’ literacy experiences in the Progressive Era within the context of one group of American Indian girls who attended …
