Global Warming Could Have A Chilling Effect On The Military, Richard F. Pittenger, Robert B. Gagosian Oct 2003

Global Warming Could Have A Chilling Effect On The Military, Richard F. Pittenger, Robert B. Gagosian

Defense Horizons

Most debates and studies addressing potential climate change have focused on the buildup of industrial greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a gradual increase in global temperatures. But this “slow ramp”1 climate change scenario ignores recent and rapidly advancing evidence that Earth’s climate repeatedly has become much colder, warmer, wetter, or drier—in time spans as short as three to 10 years.

Earth’s climate system appears to have sensitive thresholds, the crossing of which shifts the system into different modes of operation and triggers rapid, non-linear, and not necessarily global changes. This new paradigm of abrupt climate change does not appear …

On The International Game Developers Association's Second Academic Summit, Gareth Schott

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

This year a broad range of academics journeyed to San Jose to join game developers in attendance at the second International Game Developers Association's (IGDA) Academic Summit, organized and run by the small but productive IGDA Educational Committee. The main focus of this year's event was to shape the nature of future relationships between the academic community and the game development industry. Over the two-day event structured discussions and group-work were used effectively to generate key issues and debates relevant to a) theoretical research and the study of games, b) curriculum and instruction and c) commercial applications of …

Against Same-Sex Marriage, Gerard V. Bradley Oct 2003

Against Same-Sex Marriage, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

The question of the day is, Why should the law limit marriage to heterosexual couples? That is the question posed by the coming debate over the FMA.

No answer fits neatly into our cultural practices. Marriage is already in a very confused state. The way that many married couples live is, in fact scarcely distinguishable from the way some homosexual partners do. Where marriage means to so many heterosexuals: share a bed, share a checkbook and maybe, some day, share parental duties, why exactly is it that two men may not marry? Saying that two men cannot marry appears, from …

Law And Engineering: In Search Of The Law-Science Problem, Jerry L. Mashaw

Law and Contemporary Problems

Lawyers and scientists both have the intellectual conceit that a well-defined problem is not only a necessary, but almost a sufficient, condition for a successful solution. Mashaw examines the applied science of engineering in the context of health and safety regulation, focusing on the law-science interface at the NHTSA.

Images Of Older Persons In Hong Kong Popular Films, Nga Man Wong Oct 2003

Images Of Older Persons In Hong Kong Popular Films, Nga Man Wong

Lingnan Theses

Film watching is a popular leisure activity in modern society. Films, as a medium, provide powerful tools to deliver social messages and to create images of particular social groups. The cinematic images portrayed by films toward a particular social group may consequently shape our social perceptions and expectations of that social group. The ways that cinematic images portray older persons are, therefore, a potentially major source for detecting social values and views about them.

As some cinematic images tend to reflect social attitudes and behaviours, the present research aimed at investigating how popular films portray the images of older persons. …

Using Polvika's Model To Create A Service-Learning Partnership, Gwendolyn F. Foss, Maria M. Bonaiuto, Z. Sue Johnson, Dee M. Moreland

Partnerships/Community

Collaboration can maximize limited resources of universities, school systems, and public health departments by offering learning from experience. Polvika's theoretical model and principles from Community-Campus Partnerships for Health guided development of a service-learning partnership among a university, a county health department, and an alternative school in a large public school district. Of three commonly identified patterns of service-learning, this partnership demonstrated the pattern that equally emphasizes service to a community or agency, and mutual learning by all participants. All organizations in the partnership share a common goal to optimize the health of children in schools, and to provide quality learning …

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan Oct 2003

The Logic Of Reciprocity: Trust, Collective Action, And Law, Dan M. Kahan

Michigan Law Review

The Logic of Collective Action has for decades supplied the logic of public-policy analysis. In this pioneering application of public choice theory, Mancur Olson elegantly punctured the premise - shared by a variety of political theories - that individuals can be expected to act consistently with the interest of the groups to which they belong. Absent externally imposed incentives, wealth-maximizing individuals, he argued, will rarely find it in their interest to contribute to goods that benefit the group as a whole, but rather will "free ride" on the contributions that other group members make. As a result, too few individuals …

Justification And Excuse, Law And Morality, Mitchell N. Berman Oct 2003

Justification And Excuse, Law And Morality, Mitchell N. Berman

Duke Law Journal

Anglo-American theorists of the criminal law have concentrated on-one is tempted to say "obsessed over"-the distinction between justification and excuse for a good quarter-century and the scholarly attention has purchased unusually widespread agreement. Justification defenses are said to apply when the actor's conduct was not morally wrongful; excuse defenses lie when the actor did engage in wrongful conduct but is not morally blameworthy. A near-consensus thus achieved, theorists have turned to subordinate matters, joining issue most notably on the question of whether justifications are "subjective"-turning upon the actor's reasons for acting-or "objective"-involving only facts independent of the actor's beliefs and …

Police Response To Domestic Violence: Does Officer Gender Make A Difference?, Amy Leighann Whitmore Oct 2003

Police Response To Domestic Violence: Does Officer Gender Make A Difference?, Amy Leighann Whitmore

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

With domestic violence an increasing problem within the United States, police response to domestic violence has emerged as an important issue in its prevention and treatment. Recent research on police response to domestic violence has yielded conflicting results, with some studies showing that officer gender affects responses. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that officer gender has on both formal and informal police responses to domestic violence. Incident reports were collected from a police agency to examine responses to domestic violence.

Results indicated that officer gender does have a significant effect upon both formal and informal …

Effects Of Race And Prosecutor's Perceptions Of Victim's Behaviors On Domestic Violence Case Outcomes, Angel K. Williams Oct 2003

Effects Of Race And Prosecutor's Perceptions Of Victim's Behaviors On Domestic Violence Case Outcomes, Angel K. Williams

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of race and prosecutor's perceptions of victim's behavior on domestic violence case outcomes. This research utilizes data collected by Belknap and Graham (2000) in a large Midwestern Urban area during 1997-1998. Past literature supports the predictions that race and victim's behaviors affect case outcomes. However, there are no studies that examine either race and victim's behavior or the connection between them.

Analyses revealed that victim's race is not significantly related to case outcome. Perceptions of victim's behavior, however, were significantly related to case outcomes. Additionally, prosecutor's race and level of …

A Man's Home Is His Castle: A Look At The Relationship Between Fathers And Children In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Miranda M. Johnson-Parries Oct 2003

A Man's Home Is His Castle: A Look At The Relationship Between Fathers And Children In The Novels Of Jane Austen, Miranda M. Johnson-Parries

English Theses & Dissertations

In western society, the father is one of, if not the most, significant roles possible for a man. In the 18th C bourgeois family, he was especially crucial. In the novels of Jane Austen, the father, even when absent, is a central figure: Dead fathers influence their children by their lack of planning and absence, while a physically present, but mentally distant father has much the same effect. I will analyze how seemingly peripheral male characters within Jane Austen's novels react to their stations in life and try to manipulate them in a similar way to Austen's much analyzed …
