A Study Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Internet Use Among University Students, Katherine L. Dittmann Jan 2003

A Study Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Internet Use Among University Students, Katherine L. Dittmann

Dissertations

Problem . Research investigating the relationship between loneliness and various dimensions of Internet use is mixed. While some studies support the connection, other studies refute the link. More analysis in this area is needed to help clinicians, parents, college students, school counselors, and educators better understand the effects of the Internet on college-age students. This study attempts to expand understanding of the conflictual relationship that exists between loneliness and the dynamics of Internet use in undergraduate students.

Method . Four-hundred sixty-six randomly selected Andrews University undergraduate students who lived in residence halls, university apartments, and the community completed the UCLA …

American Exceptionalism And Us Foreign Policy: Public Diplomacy At The End Of The Cold War, Steve Yetiv Jan 2003

American Exceptionalism And Us Foreign Policy: Public Diplomacy At The End Of The Cold War, Steve Yetiv

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

This book offers an interesting foray into an important and timely subject. The author explores chiefly how American leaders have used the idea of American exceptionalism to realize foreign and domestic goals, including building support for government policies. But the work also deals more broadly with rhetoric and its meaning in American public diplomacy and foreign policy.

Publishing Privacy: Intellectual Property, Self-Expression, And The Victorian Novel, Jessica Bulman-Pozen Jan 2003

Publishing Privacy: Intellectual Property, Self-Expression, And The Victorian Novel, Jessica Bulman-Pozen

Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between privacy and intellectual property has resurfaced with a twist at the turn of the twenty-first century. If Victorian authors regarded intellectual property as private, contemporary proposals instead urge us to regard private information as property. In response to technological developments that have facilitated unprecedented invasions of individuals’ privacy, some scholars have advocated legally classifying private information as a form of property. These scholars insist that the best way to respond to privacy violations, particularly corporate commodification of personal data, is to invest people with property rights that would furnish control over their personal information. Insofar as intellectual …

In light of the defects of the capital punishment system and recent calls for a moratorium on executions, many are calling for serious reform of the system. Even some who would not eliminate the death penalty entirely propose reforms that they contend would result in fewer executions and would limit the death penalty to a category that they call the "worst of the worst." This program asks the question: Is there a category of defendants who are the "worst of the worst?" Can a crime be so heinous that a defendant can be said to "deserve" to be executed? Would …

The Shaping Of Chance: Actuarial Models And Criminal Profiling At The Turn Of The Twenty-First Century, Bernard Harcourt Jan 2003

The Shaping Of Chance: Actuarial Models And Criminal Profiling At The Turn Of The Twenty-First Century, Bernard Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

The turn of the twentieth century marked a new era of individualization in the field of criminal law. Drawing on the new science of positivist criminology, legal scholars called for diagnosis of the causes of delinquence and for imposition of individualized courses of remedial treatment specifically adapted to these individual diagnoses. "[M]odern science recognizes that penal or remedial treatment cannot possibly be indiscriminate and machine-like, but must be adapted to the causes, and to the man as affected by those causes," leading criminal law scholars declared. "Thus the great truth of the present and the future, for criminal science, is …

From The Ne'er-Do-Well To The Criminal History Category: The Refinement Of The Actuarial Model In Criminal Law, Bernard Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

Criminal law in the United States experienced radical change during the course of the twentieth century. The dawn of the century ushered in an era of individualization of punishment. Drawing on the new science of positive criminology, legal scholars called for diagnosis of the causes of delinquency and for imposition of individualized courses of remedial treatment specifically adapted to these diagnoses. States gradually developed indeterminate sentencing schemes that gave corrections administrators and parole boards wide discretion over treatment and release decisions, and by 1970 every state in the country and the federal government had adopted a system of indeterminate sentencing. …

Thinking Race, Making Nation (Reviewing Glenn C. Loury, The Anatomy Of Racial Inequality), Christopher A. Bracey

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

We live in a race-conscious culture. As Americans, we are a nation of people who self-consciously chose to adopt a vision of society that embraced lofty ideals of individual freedom and democracy for all along with powerful mechanisms for devastating racial oppression. Our history is replete with instances of differential treatment on account of race - slavery being only the most egregious example - that achieved the desired effect of generating remarkable disparities in socioeconomic well-being among individuals and between different racial groups. Such disparities are not simply historical artifacts. They are facts of the contemporary American racial landscape as …

Sharing Indigenous Knowledge: To Share Or Not To Share? That Is The Question, Christine Hagar Jan 2003

Sharing Indigenous Knowledge: To Share Or Not To Share? That Is The Question, Christine Hagar

Faculty Publications

The Internet and digital technology create new possibilities for the development of cultures, communities and knowledge. Over the last twenty years there has been a great increase in interest inindigenous knowledge from a variety of groups, including academia, development agencies and thecorporate world. Within this diverse range of interests, there have been initiatives to facilitate a globalnetwork to exchange indigenous knowledge by development agencies such as the World Bank's'Indigneous Knowledge for Development Program' and UNESCO's 'Best Practices of IndigenousKnowledge' database. The development agencies appear to be mainly concerned with systematizingindigenous knowledge and looking at the notion of indigenous knowledge as forming …

Spousal Abuse: Vietnamese Children’S Reports Of Parental Violence, Yoko Baba, Susan B. Murray Jan 2003

Spousal Abuse: Vietnamese Children’S Reports Of Parental Violence, Yoko Baba, Susan B. Murray

Faculty Publications, Sociology

This exploratory study used mailed questionnaires completed by 131 Vietnamese students to examine domestic violence patterns in parents' marital relationships. Research objectives included: (1) gaining an understanding of spousal abuse among Vietnamese couples; and (2) assessing which variables (demographic characteristics, decision-making power, and cultural adaptation, beliefs in traditional gender roles, and conflicts in the family) are correlated with spousal abuse. Findings suggest that although both parents used reasoning, mental abuse and physical abuse in their marital relationships, Vietnamese fathers were more likely to be physically abusive than mothers. Additional variables associated with family conflicts are also examined. Research implications and …

Antenatal Education In The Transition To Motherhood, Suzanne Elizabeth Burley Jan 2003

Antenatal Education In The Transition To Motherhood, Suzanne Elizabeth Burley

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between antenatal education and the transition to motherhood, focusing on the pre-natal expectations and postnatal experiences of a small sample of first-time mothers in Plymouth. The aims of the study were 1) to investigate the style and content of statutory and voluntary sector antenatal classes in the Plymouth area. 2) To investigate factors affecting non-attendance, including non-attenders' perceptions of them. 3) To examine the role of lay systems of knowledge and support in the transition to motherhood and 4) to investigate the differential impact of different patterns of knowledge and support on the experiences of …

Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew Jan 2003

Philosophies Of Colour: Gender And Acculturation, Helen V Andrew

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My hypothesis is that 'Colour' as idea acts as a dynamic in the production of meaning and as such is part of what Le Doeuff (1991: 46-49) argues are deeply held epistemes that structure and govern our ways of thinking. I have dealt with the difficulties attendant on the analysis of a phenomenon as insubstantial as colour (as idea and as precept) by assuming Goethe's (1810: 305-323) concept of the enrobement of colour to objects without also attaching Goethe's theoretical hypothesis of moral associations to colour. Thus I combine four different methodologies to broadly related areas and cloak each in …

The Kinesfield : A Study Of Movement-Based Interactive And Choreographic Art, Gretchen Elizabeth Schiller Jan 2003

The Kinesfield : A Study Of Movement-Based Interactive And Choreographic Art, Gretchen Elizabeth Schiller

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Through the exploration of practice and theory, this thesis aims to elucidate the characteristics of movement-based interactive art and the kinesfield, a term developed during the course of the research to describe the publics' body-medium. Movement-based interactive art is based on choreographed movements of the body, media and specialized technologies which facilitate new forms of participatory movement experience. This emergent art form has initiated new methods of experiencing and presenting dance in the public domain. lt is argued that this leads to new artistic developments which may constitute a paradigm shift of the concept of the body-medium in the field …

Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe Jan 2003

Political Dealignment In Britain : The Local Evidence 1959-1979, Paul James Lambe

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis challenges the dominant view that municipal elections tell us practically nothing about the preferences and attitudes of the voter to local issues and events, that municipal elections are no more than national referendums. It suggests that the influence of socio-economic environment and political context and indeed structural factors have hitherto been underestimated. It argues that municipal politics and voting behaviour impact upon parliamentary electoral behaviour and outcomes and thereby the politics of place impinge upon the national electoral level. The thesis employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the qualitative research methods of the historian and the quantitative statistical …

Children And Family Values : A Critical Appraisal Of 'Family' In Schools, Rowena Alexandra Passy Jan 2003

Children And Family Values : A Critical Appraisal Of 'Family' In Schools, Rowena Alexandra Passy

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Prompted by the Labour government's proposal to introduce education on family relationships into the National Curriculum, this research project was set up to investigate how teachers portrayed 'family' within the classroom and the reactions that children had to the images that were presented. The intention was to highlight any problems that might arise from including 'family' into the formal curriculum. The fieldwork was conducted in three primary and three secondary schools. Two of each of the schools were located in the West Country and the remaining two, in order to give some ethnic and cultural balance to the project, were …

Britain In Europe : A Discourse-Theoretical Approach, Gavin Moorhead Jan 2003

Britain In Europe : A Discourse-Theoretical Approach, Gavin Moorhead

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Previous research upon European integration has observed that Britain has an I awkward partnership' with the rest of the EU. However, these analyses have not addressed how this awkward relationship reflects a difference in political and governmental discourse between Britain and the other Continental European member states. This thesis will examine this divergence. To this end, it applies the discourse-theoretical approach developed by Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, and Slavoj Zi2ek. By applying the discourse-theoretical concept of social antagonism, it will seek to explain why these discourses are different and opposed. Possible solutions to this conflict will then be identified and …

Creating Emotionally Aware Performance Environments: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Inferred And Invisible Data Space, Richard Mark Povall Jan 2003

Creating Emotionally Aware Performance Environments: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Inferred And Invisible Data Space, Richard Mark Povall

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The practical research undertaken for this thesis - the building of interactive and non-interactive environments for performance - posits a radical recasting of the performing body in physical and digital space. The choreographic and thematic context of the performance work has forced us', as makers, to ask questions about the nature of digital interactivity which in turn feeds the work theoretically, technically and thematically. A computer views (and attempts to interpret) motion information through a video camera, and, by way of a scripting language, converts that information into MIDI' data. As the research has developed, our company has been able …

From 'Le Cri De La Nature' To 'Pygmalion' : A Study Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Philosophy Of Music And Aesthetic And Reform Of Opera, Stephen John Xavier Baysted

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis sets Rousseau's philosophy of music and aesthetic of opera against the wider philosophical backcloth of eighteenth-centuryF rance and in contraposition to the more scopic music-theoredcabl ackdrop,o f which Rameau'sw ritings are takena s a paradigm. The first half of the thesis contends that the philosophy of music is fashioned upon a trinary model which mirrors the philosophy of nature and history. The first sector is an ideal, hypothetical state; the second (the 'fall) is the moment when the ideal state is ruptured, when societal and cultural institutions - and history - commence; the third, is the 'actual state', …

'The Cost Of Banking On Eastern Promises' An Ethnographic Study Of The Impact Of Changing Bank Strategies On Employees, Susan Jane Child Jan 2003

'The Cost Of Banking On Eastern Promises' An Ethnographic Study Of The Impact Of Changing Bank Strategies On Employees, Susan Jane Child

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Banking is a major employment sector, which has experienced phenomenal growth over the last decade. Following the de-regulation of the financial marketplace and the entry of ‘new players', the industry has suffered from an almost ruinous internal struggle between its traditional, gentlemanly ethos (Clarke and Vincent, 1989) and the enforced adoption of aggressive sales and marketing strategies (Knights and Tinker, 1997). My research has investigated the various ways that ‘change’ (particularly strategic change consequential to the piecemeal adoption of ‘Japanese-style' systems of working and management -'HRM, TQM and lean production) have been met, experienced, negotiated, and to some extent contested, …

Health Education For Urban Refugees In Cairo : A Pilot Project With Young Men From Sierra Leone And Liberia, Elizabeth Coker, Alison Bichard, Andrea Nannipieri, James Wani

Faculty Journal Articles

This pilot project, conducted under the auspices of the Forced Migration and Refugees Studies Program (FMRS) at the American University in Cairo, arose as part of a continued commitment to outreach projects of direct benefit to the refugee community. Maintaining healthy behaviors and accessing adequate health care are particular challenges for refugees living in large urban areas such as Cairo. Young refugees are at risk for unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other health-related problems such as nutritional deficits and stress-related disorders. Education in their country of origin may have been disrupted, and in Cairo they may be separated from …

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Turkey: Findings Of A Five-Week Exploratory Study December 2002 – January 2003, Elizabeth Frantz

Faculty Journal Articles

This report examines the current refugee situation in Turkey. Turkey is party to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol, however it has maintained the geographical reservation, thereby granting refugee status only to those who became refugees as a result of events in Europe. In the past two decades, Turkey has become a reluctant host to an increasing number of asylum seekers, both Europeans and non-Europeans. This report investigates the progress in Turkey’s asylum procedures as well as the many areas that need strengthening, including, most importantly, in preventing refoulement. Both national and international …

Acting Black: College, Identity, And The Performance Of Race, Sarah Willie-Lebreton

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works

Sarah Willie asks: What's it like to be black on campus. For most Black students, attending predominantly white universities, it is a struggle. Do you try to blend in? Do you take a stand? Do you end up acting as the token representative for your whole race? And what about those students who attend predominantly black universities? How do their experiences differ? In Acting Black, Sarah Willie interviews 55 African American alumnae of two universities, comparable except that one is predominantly white, Northwestern, and one is predominantly black, Howard. What she discovers through their stories, mirrored in her own college …
