Using Zero-Inflated Count Regression Models To Estimate The Fertility Of U. S. Women, Dudley L. Poston Jr., Sherry L. Mckibben Nov 2003

Using Zero-Inflated Count Regression Models To Estimate The Fertility Of U. S. Women, Dudley L. Poston Jr., Sherry L. Mckibben

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In the modeling of count variables there is sometimes a preponderance of zero counts. This article concerns the estimation of Poisson regression models (PRM) and negative binomial regression models (NBRM) to predict the average number of children ever born (CEB) to women in the U.S. The PRM and NBRM will often under-predict zeros because they do not consider zero counts of women who are not trying to have children. The fertility of U.S. white and Mexican-origin women show that zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) and zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) models perform better in many respects than the Poisson and negative binomial models. …

P* Index Of Segregation: Distribution Under Reassignment, Charles F. Bond, F. D. Richard Nov 2003

P* Index Of Segregation: Distribution Under Reassignment, Charles F. Bond, F. D. Richard

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Students of intergroup relations have measured segregation with a P* index. In this article, we describe the distribution of this index under a stochastic model. We derive exact, closed-form expressions for the mean, variance, and skewness of P* under random segregation. These yield equivalent expressions for a second segregation index: η2. Our analytic results reveal some of the distributional properties of these indices, inform new standardizations of the indices, and enable small-sample significance testing. Two illustrative examples are presented.

Example Of The Impact Of Weights And Design Effects On Contingency Tables And Chi-Square Analysis, David A. Walker, Denise Y. Young Nov 2003

Example Of The Impact Of Weights And Design Effects On Contingency Tables And Chi-Square Analysis, David A. Walker, Denise Y. Young

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Many national data sets used in educational research are not based on simple random sampling schemes, but instead are constructed using complex sampling designs characterized by multi-stage cluster sampling and over-sampling of some groups. Incorrect results are obtained from statistical analysis if adjustments are not made for the sampling design. This study demonstrates how the use of weights and design effects impact the results of contingency tables and chi-square analysis of data from complex sampling designs.

Variable Selection For Poisson Regression Model, Felix Famoye, Daniel E. Rothe Nov 2003

Variable Selection For Poisson Regression Model, Felix Famoye, Daniel E. Rothe

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Poisson regression is useful in modeling count data. In a study with many independent variables, it is desirable to reduce the number of variables while maintaining a model that is useful for prediction. This article presents a variable selection technique for Poisson regression models. The data used is log-linear, but the methods could be adapted to other relationships. The model parameters are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood. The use of measures of goodness-of-fit to select appropriate variables is discussed. A forward selection algorithm is presented and illustrated on a numerical data set. This algorithm performs as well if …

The Environment Of Education: Identifying Effects Of The Hidden Curriculum On Students' Environmental Perceptions, Values, And Attitudes, Amy Duckert Nov 2003

The Environment Of Education: Identifying Effects Of The Hidden Curriculum On Students' Environmental Perceptions, Values, And Attitudes, Amy Duckert

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Our relationship with our environment is a function of culture and personal experience. Environmental perceptions, values, and attitudes are therefore linked to cultural standards. As Saul (2000) has stated, "Environmental problems result from environmental practices, and environmental practices are cultural activities" (p. 5). The link between environmental issues and cultural practices is clear, but the question of how to change cultural norms is a difficult one. Some environmental theorists claim the environmental movement has not paid enough attention to culture and has therefore failed to address problems at their true cause (Saul, 2000; Bowers, 1997).

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine Nov 2003

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine

Pets Collection

The research on organizational framing and the metaphor of institutional “thinking” highlight the ways that social problems organizations shape the ameliorative services they deliver. Social problems work then perpetuates representations of problems that may not match the conditions clients face. This study extends social problems literature to argue that organizations sometimes “think” differently about the problems they intend to solve than do persons involved with these problems in everyday life. Using ethnographic research and interviews, this article contrasts the way in which animal sheltering, as an institution, frames the problem of unwanted animals with how the public interprets that problem. …

Women’S Educational Attainment And Intergenerational Patterns Of Fertility Behaviour In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba Nov 2003

Women’S Educational Attainment And Intergenerational Patterns Of Fertility Behaviour In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba

PSC Discussion Papers Series

There is a strong theoretical and empirical relationship between educational attainment and fertility behaviour. However, a fundamental question that has largely been neglected is the change in this relationship across cohorts resulting from differential improvement in educational opportunities for women over time and how it relates to fertility transition. Utilizing the 1998 DHS data from Kenya this study examines the differential effect of educational attainment on women’s use of modern contraception and desire for cessation of childbearing across generations. The findings indicate that even after controlling for husband’s education and other relevant factors, a woman’s advanced education is positively associated …

Societal Stability And Political Reform : Chinese Politics In The 1990s, Yiu Chung Wong Nov 2003

Societal Stability And Political Reform : Chinese Politics In The 1990s, Yiu Chung Wong

CAPS Working Paper Series

On 28 September 1995, Jiang Zemin delivered one of the most important speeches in his tenure as the General Secretary of the CCP in the Fifth Plenum of 14th CCP Congress, which is entitled “To Handle Correctly Certain Relationships in the Process of Socialist Modernization Construction”. On the top of the agenda was the relationships between reform, development and stability. To him, reform, in particular economic reform, must be pursued; development is the enhancing of national strength and stability is the pre-condition of development. Indeed, it is the equilibrium of these three sets of relationships that the CCP leadership strove …

Minding The Gap: An Assessment Of Racial Disparity In Metropolitan Chicago, Center For Urban Research And Learning, The Human Relations Foundation/Jane Addams Policy Initiative

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

In cooperation with the Human Relations Foundation of Chicago (HRF), CURL and the Jane Addams Hull House examined inequalities among racial and ethnic groups in Chicago. Drawing from a broad range of existing data sources, researchers documented areas of reduced inequality as well as other areas of persistent inequality.

Minding the Gap: An Assessment of Racial Disparity in Metropolitan Chicago examines seven quality of life measurements: income, wealth and employment, education, housing, transportation, health, the lives of children and the criminal justice system. This report, by examining these seven systems, not just one, creates a unique context for understanding both …

Reforming Elementary Science Teacher Preparation: What About Extant Teaching Beliefs?, Julie A. Thomas, Jon E. Pedersen Nov 2003

Reforming Elementary Science Teacher Preparation: What About Extant Teaching Beliefs?, Julie A. Thomas, Jon E. Pedersen

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

A common maxim in the educational profession is that one teaches the way one is taught. Indications are that preservice teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and practices may be linked to previous experiences. Calderhead and Robson (1991) underscored this concern by asserting that teachers use good teachers as models for developing their own images as teachers. Others have argued that the images held by teachers are used as frames of reference for their own teaching practices. In this article, preservice teachers' perceptions of themselves as science teachers are examined. The assertion is made that a long history of stereotypical science learning experiences—in …

Neighborhood programs are operated in six communities through Neighborhood Technology Collaboratives, coalitions of community-based organizations. These coalitions select participating families, and provide …

Do Asian Men Face Wage Discrimination In The United States?, Marlene Kim Nov 2003

Do Asian Men Face Wage Discrimination In The United States?, Marlene Kim

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Currently there is a debate regarding whether Asian men suffer from workplace discrimination on account of their race. The research findings have been mixed. Cabezas and Kawaguchi (1988) found that in the San Francisco Metropolitan Area, both foreign-born and U.S.-born men who were of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Korean descent earned less than similarly qualified U.S.-born white men, although they did not examine the statistical significance of these findings. Using the same 1980 census data on a national sample of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, and Korean men, Duleep and Sanders (1992) find differences in earnings by race that are …

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Academic Outcomes: A Statewide Study Of Michigan Learn And Serve Grantees, Stephen Meyer Nov 2003

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Academic Outcomes: A Statewide Study Of Michigan Learn And Serve Grantees, Stephen Meyer

Project Summaries

Service-learning is a teaching strategy that involves students in service projects that are connected to the curriculum. Service-learning has its roots in the ideas of philosophers, such as Piaget and Dewey, who argued that students learn more when they are actively involved in their own learning and when learning has a distinct purpose (Anderson, Kinsley, Negroni, & Price, 1991; Conrad & Hedin, 1991; Kinsley, 1997). A body of evidence is building in support of the positive academic outcomes of service-learning (see Billig, 2000 for a review). However, the conclusions that can be drawn from many of these research studies are …

Internet Sex Crimes Against Minors: The Response Of Law Enforcement., Janis Wolak, Kimberly J. Mitchell, David Finkelhor

Crimes Against Children Research Center

The Internet1 and computers have come to play a growing role in sex crimes that are committed against children and youth.2 Since the mid-1990s these developing technologies have posed challenges for law enforcement requiring them to confront situations not anticipated in criminal statutes, master technical advances, develop new investigative techniques, and handle criminal cases that often span multiple jurisdictions. To assist, legislators have acted on a number of fronts creating new statutes that encompass Internet offenses, stiffening penalties, and creating a national clearinghouse for reports of Internet-related crimes against children and the CyberTipline® operated by the National Center for Missing …
