Transnational Activist Networks And The Emergence Of Labor Internationalism In The Nafta Countries, Joel Stillerman Jan 2003

Transnational Activist Networks And The Emergence Of Labor Internationalism In The Nafta Countries, Joel Stillerman

Peer Reviewed Articles

Recent accounts of transnational activism have examined a variety of social movement organizations (SMOs) but have paid little attention to labor transnationalism. This article utilizes and adapts this new transnational social movements scholarship to understand contemporary labor activism in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries. Exploring the preexisting networks and intramovement cleavages that helped spawn labor opposition to NAFTA, it focuses on labor activists' complaints under the treaty's labor side accord. I explore how rising political opportunities associated with the treaty and its new institutions created new political arenas, targets for activists, and incentives for cross-border collaboration. The …

Civic Engagement And Service-Learning With Young Children: Lntergenerational Peacemaking Projects: By The Students, Volunteers And Staff Of Peace Games, Education Commission Of The States

Intergenerational

Violence, in all of its forms, continues to make learning difficult, if not impossible, for a substantial number of children. While high-profile incidences such as the Columbine High School shootings grab the public's attention, it is the daily difficulties of bullies, intimidation and fear that affect students in all schools (Twemlow, 2001 ).

Unexplainable On Grounds Other Than Race: The Inversion Of Privilege And Subordination In Equal Protection Jurisprudence, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 2003

Unexplainable On Grounds Other Than Race: The Inversion Of Privilege And Subordination In Equal Protection Jurisprudence, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

In this article, Professor Darren Hutchinson contributes to the debate over the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause by arguing that the Supreme Court has inverted its purpose and effect. Professor Hutchinson contends that the Court, in its judicial capacity, provides protection and judicial solicitude for privileged and powerful groups in our country, while at the same time requires traditionally subordinated and oppressed groups to utilize the political process to seek redress for acts of oppression. According to Professor Hutchinson, this process allows social structures of oppression and subordination to remain intact.

First, Professor Hutchinson examines the various …

Towards A New Scholarship For Equal Justice, James S. Liebman Jan 2003

Towards A New Scholarship For Equal Justice, James S. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

Over the last thirty years, the legal academy has turned a cold shoulder to the subject matter of this symposium: scholarship for equal justice. I am here to suggest that a thaw may be on the way. By scholarship for equal justice – as distinguished from scholarship about that topic – I mean academic work undertaken for the purpose of improving outcomes for individuals and members of groups who have been systematically held back by their race, sex, poverty, or any other basis for rationing success that our legal system treats with suspicion. With reference to some of my own …

Dictionary Of Contemporary Religion In The Western World: Exploring Living Faiths In Postmodern Contexts (Review), James F. Lewis

Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Works

When Samuel Clemens heard that a journalist had reported his passing, he quipped: “Rumors of my death, have been greatly exaggerated.” In a similar vein, the Dictionary serves to lay to rest the antiquated but oft-believed claim of secular elites concerning the imminent demise of religion. In 100 articles, written by 61 gifted contributors (18 of whom are from North America) the reader is informed of the staggering breadth, growing profusion and zealous tenacity of religion in modern human culture and its ability to ever morph into new and creative expressions. The authors are committed to the Christian tradition but …

Hard Choices And Soft Law: Ethical Codes, Policy Guidelines And The Role Of The Courts In Regulating Government, Lorne Sossin, Charles Smith Jan 2003

Hard Choices And Soft Law: Ethical Codes, Policy Guidelines And The Role Of The Courts In Regulating Government, Lorne Sossin, Charles Smith

Articles & Book Chapters

The authors examine a number of examples of "soft law": written and unwritten instruments and influences which shape administrative decision making Rather than rendering bureaucratic processes more transparent and cohesive, or fostering greater accountability and consistency among decision-makers, "soft law" in this context frequently reinforces artificial divisions. Moreover, it insulates decisions and decision-makers from the kinds of critical inquiry typically associated with "hard law. " If it is to realize its potential as a bridge between law and policy, and lend meaning to core principles - like fairness and reliability - soft law ought to be subjected to similarly critical …

Purpose of Study. Most studies examining stress and coping patterns of pastoral wives have been conducted from an advanced country background. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine perceived stress and coping patterns of pastoral wives of the Nigerian Union Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church.

Methodology. A quantitative method of collecting data was used in this study. The two psychological …

[Review Of] Catherine Ceniza Choy. Empire Of Care: Nursing And Migration In Filipino American History, Cecilia G. Manrique Jan 2003

[Review Of] Catherine Ceniza Choy. Empire Of Care: Nursing And Migration In Filipino American History, Cecilia G. Manrique

Ethnic Studies Review

This book takes a look at the topic of the twentieth-century migration of Filipinos to the United States and focuses specifically on those migrants in the nursing profession. Whether one agrees with the author or not, the basic premise of the piece is that an international Filipino professional nurse labor force has been created due to the historical demands of U.S. imperialism. This re-examination of the history of the role of nursing in U.S. colonialism shows that not all immigrants readily assimilate into American society and that the racialization of Filipinos in the United States continually takes place.

Freedom Of Speech And The Language Of Architecture, Kevin G. Gill Jan 2003

Freedom Of Speech And The Language Of Architecture, Kevin G. Gill

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, in Bear Run, Pennsylvania, is a celebrated architectural masterpiece of groundbreaking vision and design ingenuity. Today unfortunately, in many municipalities, strict design controls prevent architects from designing such visionary work. These controls preclude buildings that do not mimic a certain architectural style, or otherwise conform to the neighborhood. They are promulgated on notions of community harmony; the argument is made that unconventional architectural design is somehow discordant and will adversely affect property values.

Architecture has been called humanity's greatest form of expression. Architecture can be a physical expression of philosophical, religious, political, and aesthetic ideas and …

Upjohn Press

This book reveals the considerable variation in the levels of growth in a broad set of nonstandard work arrangements while presenting a comprehensive view of how, as a result, the nature of the employment relationship is changing within and among countries. The international roster of economists, sociologists, and labor law experts who contributed draw on cross-country variations in economic conditions and institutional characteristics to explain why some arrangements have grown faster in some countries than in others and what this means for workers. By considering a broad array of nonstandard work arrangements in a number of economies, the authors provide …

Evaluation Of The Maudsley Addiction Profile (Map) For Use With An American Substance Abuse Population, Hannelore T. Barbieri

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Multi-dimensional instruments in the addiction field developed in the United States as well as in other countries are limited. Habitat Connectivity In Reef Fish Communities And Marine Reserve Design In Old Providence-Santa Catalina, Colombia, R.S. Appeldoorn, A. Friedlander, J. Sladek Nowlis, P. Usseglio, A. Mitchell-Chui

Gulf and Caribbean Research

On the insular platform of Old Providence/Santa Catalina, Colombia, we compared nearshore lagoonal patch reefs to those on the northern bank distant from the islands to determine the importance of habitat connectivity to fish community structure. Nearshore patch reefs had greater proximity to mangrove, seagrass and rocky shore habitats, and they had significantly more individuals. Nearshore reefs also tended to have a greater total biomass, more species, a higher proportion of predators of mobile invertebrates and small fishes, and a lower proportion of herbivores. Biomass of snappers and grunts at nearshore sites was four times greater compared to bank sites, …

Teaching Strategies Employed By Arkansas High School Teachers Using Traditional And Block Scheduled Formats, Randy Lee Byrd

Theses and Dissertations

This study surveyed teachers in Arkansas who were teaching in high performing high schools in either a traditional or block-scheduled format. The study sought to determine what instructional strategies were being used in both types of classroom settings. This study also explored what influence staff development had on the different instructional strategies presented to the students in both block and traditionally scheduled settings. This study employed a self-reporting method in the form of a Likert-type scaled survey on which teachers recorded their responses. A Chi-Square test was then applied to the results of the survey to determine if there were …
