Cache County, Utah Agricultural Landevaluation And Site Assessment Handbook, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, G. Busch

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Urban encroachment on farmland has serious implications for the farm sector. As the county’s economic base and population has grown, important agricultural lands have been converted to urban uses. Since 1986, Cache County has lost 8,884 acres of prime and statewide important farmland - nearly 14 square miles - to urban development. The current rate of development is consuming over 600 acres of prime and statewide important farmland each year. As we plan for the future and the most cost efficient means for housing this population growth, it is important to note two things: 1) Housing is most affordable in …

After a career of working and living with Native Americans and studying their traditions, Barre Toelken has written this sweeping study of Native American folklore in the West. Within a framework of performance theory, cultural worldview, and collaborative research, he examines Native American visual arts, dance, oral tradition (story and song), humor, and patterns of thinking and discovery to demonstrate what can be gleaned from Indian traditions by Natives and non-Natives alike. In the process he considers popular distortions of Indian beliefs, demystifies many traditions by showing how they can be comprehended within their cultural contexts, considers why some aspects …

Mediation, Walrasian Tatonnement, And Negotiations As An Exchange Economy, David Dickenson Jan 2003

Mediation, Walrasian Tatonnement, And Negotiations As An Exchange Economy, David Dickenson

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures, such as mediation and arbitration, are becoming increasingly used to help resolve disputes in a variety of areas. Among ADR procedures, mediation is the most utilized yet least analyzed procedure. This article examines negotiations and dispute resolution using the tools of general equilibrium theory. Specifically, mediators function as the Walrasian auctioneers of exchange theory by altering trade-off rates among bargaining issues. In this way, mediators facilitate a process leading towards voluntary settlements. This idea of Walrasian mediation is supported by the literature on mediation and mediator techniques, and so this insight opens up mediation to …

Demographics And The Changing Canadian Family, Roderic Beaujot Jan 2003

Demographics And The Changing Canadian Family, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This paper starts with a synthesis of changes in families, work (paid and unpaid), reproduction, and the situation of children and youth. Alternate models of family policy are then elaborated, along with a discussion of policies in given domains associated with earning and caring, the division of labour, children and lone parents. Taking seriously the interest to arrive at a model that would increase the overlap in the earning and caring activities of men and women, the paper ends with a suggestion based on shared parental leave and part-time work, followed by the early entry of children to nursery schools …

Integrating Aboriginal Peoples Into Canada's Casino Industry, Stefan GröSchl Jan 2003

Integrating Aboriginal Peoples Into Canada's Casino Industry, Stefan GröSchl

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper provides insights into a Canadian gaming organization and its human resources management policies and practices regarding the integration of Aboriginal peoples. The gaming organisa- tion follows a very aggressive human resources strategy that is supported by an agreement between the provincial government and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, and supported by unions and the Hu- man Rights Code of Canada. Despite its status as a gaming enterprise, Casino Regina has developed human resources tools and practices that could be adapted or applied in hospitality organisations facing similar challenges when employing Aboriginal peoples.

The Rehabilitation Of Indigenous Prisoners, Andrew Day, Kevin Howells, Sharon Casey Jan 2003

The Rehabilitation Of Indigenous Prisoners, Andrew Day, Kevin Howells, Sharon Casey

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

The massive problems experienced by Indigenous Australians in their encounters with the criminal justice system have been well documented and widely discussed. This paper applies the Risk, Needs and Responsivity Model of rehabilitation to Indigenous offenders. While much of the review is devoted to a discussion of Australian Indigenous offenders, the issues raised are likely to be relevant to Indigenous groups from other countries and, possibly, ethnic minority offenders more generally. We concluded that whilst the model clearly has value, rehabilitation programs would benefit from a careful consideration of issues relating specifically to the Risk, Needs and Responsivity of Indigenous …

The Logic Of Aboriginal Rights, Duncan Ivison Jan 2003

The Logic Of Aboriginal Rights, Duncan Ivison

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Are there any aboriginal rights? If there are, then what kind of rights are they? Are they human rights adapted and shaped to the circumstances of indigenous peoples? Or are they specific cultural rights, exclusive to members of aboriginal societies? In recent liberal political theory, aboriginal rights are often conceived of as cultural rights and thus as group rights. As a result, they are vulner- able to at least three kinds of objections: i) that culture is not a primary good relevant to the currency of egalitarian justice; ii) that group rights are inimical to the moral individualism of liberal …

Buddhist Perspectives And Human Communication, Rueyling Chuang, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper examines the connection between Buddhist essential teachings and human communication in the East Asian context. The essential Buddhist essential teachings, including the perception of reality, living the present moment and mindfulness, compassion, the four noble truths, and the six paramitas are first delineated. The paper then analyzes how these Buddhist teachings influence East Asian communication behaviors from five perspectives: ontological assumptions, communication ethics, communication behaviors, relationship development, and rhetorical communication. It is concluded that although Buddhist teachings show great impact on the life of East Asians, the influence of other religions and thoughts should not be ignored.

Jane Austen's Powers Of Consciousness, Diane M. Counts Jan 2003

Jane Austen's Powers Of Consciousness, Diane M. Counts

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis incorporates information from recent biographies, feminist studies, and scholarly interpretations focusing on Jane Austen's narrative strategies. Such incorporation of material provides a context for understanding the significance of Austen's contributions to the novel form and illuminating the development of the female narrative voice. It focuses on Emma, Austen's last novel published during her lifetime, as an exemplification of Austen's enunciation of a feminine perspective of life and vocalization of a growing female self-awareness - her powers of consciousness - through Emma. Of primary concern is Austen's use of narrative techniques enabling the reader to become intimately acquainted and …

The frequently cited Broverman study (Broverman, Broverman, Clarkson, Rosenkrantz, and Vogel, 1970) has motivated a great deal research in the area of gender bias, particularly investigations into the attitudes of mental health professionals. After a review of the literature referencing the Broverman study, the current study, utilizing the research patterns set forth in that research, examines if and to what degree gender bias affects mental health professionals in the state of West Virginia. Violence And Vigilantism In Modern Irish Literature, Janet Carmichael Jan 2003

Violence And Vigilantism In Modern Irish Literature, Janet Carmichael

ETD Archive

Many authors of modern Irish literary works challenge the rhetoric used to justify the continuation of conflict in Northern Ireland. One effective method used to accomplish this challenge is the dramatic depiction of violence. The depictions are notable in that they are designed to fall outside of, run counter to, or exceed the normative frameworks perpetuated by the dominant ideologies. They are formulated to promote social change by attacking the foundational fallacies used to validate the structural hegemony. Eoin McNamee and Kate O'Riordan use graphic depictions of violence and human destruction in their novels to expose some of the fallacies …

No. 29: The New Brain Drain From Zimbabwe, Daniel S. Tevara, Jonathan Crush Jan 2003

No. 29: The New Brain Drain From Zimbabwe, Daniel S. Tevara, Jonathan Crush

Southern African Migration Programme

All the signs point to the existence of a growing exodus of skilled Zimbabweans from the country. Although the precise dimensions and impacts of this “brain drain” have yet to be determined, the Zimbabwean government has recently sought to stem the tide with various policy measures. The education and health sectors appear to be the hardest hit although professionals in other sectors have also been leaving in numbers.

The Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) has undertaken a multi-country study of the brain drain within and from the Southern African Development Community (SADC). SAMP’s primary contribution is to examine the skills …
