Mothers’ Everyday Realities And Child Placement Experiences (Summary Report), Nancy Colleen Freymond Jan 2003

Mothers’ Everyday Realities And Child Placement Experiences (Summary Report), Nancy Colleen Freymond

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Placing a child in substitute care is one of the most challenging aspects of child welfare work. In situations of apprehension, child welfare workers may be required to make quick decisions about child placement sometimes with very limited information. This paper is based on interviews with mothers whose children were placed in substitute care. Mothers’ daily lives, including the nature of adversity in their lives, will be discussed. Mothers’ response to adversity and how they are impacted both positively and negatively by child welfare interventions will also be explored. Their experiences of placement reveals there is a disconnection between the …

Social Disorganization Theory And Crime In West Virginia, Billy Crum Jan 2003

Social Disorganization Theory And Crime In West Virginia, Billy Crum

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to test the social disorganization theory by determining how a community’s ability to maintain social control effects crime rate, especially in areas of West Virginia that are experiencing rapid social change. Do lack of social controls and rapid social change effect crime rates in rural areas, and if so, what kinds of crimes are likely to be effected? This study is going to attempt to answer this puzzling question. This study uses poverty rate, unemployment rate, and high school dropout rate as the independent variables, and crime rate as the dependent variable.

An Ethnographic Study Of Antiwar Protestors, Sherrie Ladegast Jan 2003

An Ethnographic Study Of Antiwar Protestors, Sherrie Ladegast

McNair Scholars Journal

This is an ethnographic study of the recent antiwar protestors, focusing on the activists’ objectives and motivations for their participation in antiwar rallies and addresses any discernable personality types. The overall purpose is typical of “verstehen” sociology, which seeks to understand the world as the subjects understand it. I collected data through a “snowball” networking sample of thirty-four Western Michigan interviewees and observation, both participation and non-participation. In addition, a combined survey of Altemeyer’s RWA-scale and the Social Dominance Orientation Scale was administered to participants, but will be analyzed in a later study. A qualitative content analysis was conducted and …

The Benefits, Challenges, And Implications Of Teleworking: A Literature Review, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Flexible work arrangements are becoming more important to entrepreneurs today. However, effective new business owners are taking more time to consider the pros and cons of these arrangements. The purpose of this review is to explore the literature related to telework and its benefits, challenges, and implications for individuals, work groups, and organizations. It investigates the possible implications of telework to management theory and practice. It lists a number of theories/models and discusses concerns about the lack of researched theoretical frameworks. Finally, after the benefits and challenges are reviewed, recommendations and contributions are presented.

Reducing Automobile Emissions In Southern California: The Dance Of Public Policies And Technological Fixes, Rudi Volti Jan 2003

Reducing Automobile Emissions In Southern California: The Dance Of Public Policies And Technological Fixes, Rudi Volti

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

For many years I have taught at a small liberal arts college in Southern California. When first-year students arrived at the college in the early 1970s, they settled into the usual things that occupy freshmen. A few weeks would go by, and then they would make a remarkable discovery: tall mountains would appear to the north as autumn weather dissipated the heavy blanket of smog that had obscured them. Today, the air is not perfectly clear in September, but students are aware of the mountains from the day they move into the dormitories. The region's partial victory over smog illustrates …

Book Review: Then The Whisper Put On Flesh: New Testament Ethics In An African American Context, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This book is a bold and challenging project that, for various reasons, few scholars these days would even dare attempt. It aims to bring together the methods, approaches, and agenda of "cultural interpretation" of the New Testament, "biblical ethics," and the study of "African American Christianity."

Draft Of Rendering Copyright Into Caesar - 2003, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2003

Draft Of Rendering Copyright Into Caesar - 2003, Wendy J. Gordon

Scholarship Chronologically

This article makes a simple suggestion. Copyright rules by money, so let it rule the money-bound. Let a different set of rules evolve for more complex uses, particularly when the users have a personal relationship with the utilized text. Copyright. When new artists make transformative use of existing works in settings not characterized by pre-use commercial negotiations, copyright should avoid imposing a distorting burden.

2003 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

AS unimaginable as it seems, slavery and bondage still persist in the early twenty-first century. Millions of people around the world still suffer in silence in slave-like situations of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation from which they cannot free themselves. Trafficking in persons is one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time. It is, as the International Labour Organization (ILO) points out, the “underside of globalization.”
