Culture And Its Transfer: Ways Of Creating General Knowledge Through The Study Of Cultural Particulars, Jaan Valsiner Feb 2003

Culture And Its Transfer: Ways Of Creating General Knowledge Through The Study Of Cultural Particulars, Jaan Valsiner

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Two perspectives of scientific inquiry-both making use of the notion of culture-are analyzed from the perspective of how general knowledge is being constructed by each. It is demonstrated how cross-cultural psychology has made use of traditional psychology's inductive emphasis on comparisons of samples (and generalization to populations). Cross-cultural psychology has been a part of general and differential psychologies. In contrast, the cultural psychology that has developed in parallel with cross-cultural psychology on the basis of anthropology and developmental psychology has been built upon the notion of systemic causality, and on the basis of developmental assumptions. There is overlap in the …

Laws And Limits Of Econometrics, Peter C.B. Phillips Feb 2003

Laws And Limits Of Econometrics, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We start by discussing some general weaknesses and limitations of the econometric approach. A template from sociology is used to formulate six laws that characterize mainstream activities of econometrics and the scientific limits of those activities., we discuss some proximity theorems that quantify by means of explicit bounds how close we can get to the generating mechanism of the data and the optimal forecasts of next period observations using a finite number of observations. The magnitude of the bound depends on the characteristics of the model and the trajectory of the observed data. The results show that trends are more …

Student Perceptions On The Counselor Education Exit Requirement Experience, Toula D. Barlow, Sarah M. Toman, Kathryn C. Maccluskie

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

Master’s level Counselor Education Programs were asked to participate in a study to determine students’ perceptions about the exit requirement experience. Ninety-five recent graduates or graduate students nearing completion of a counselor education degree were surveyed. Results from 91 usable responses indicated that overall, students who were enrolled in programs that required some form of an exit requirement were satisfied with the process. Furthermore, the majority of these respondents felt that the major purpose of the exit requirement was to measure synthesis of knowledge. Implications for assessment in counselor education programs are discussed.

Transnational and domestic terrorists may employ unconventional weapons of mass destruction and/or mass contamination in their future operations against governments. These asymmetrical tactics may include nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons designed to produce panic and disruption in daily life. This article addresses several of the myriad legal and practical issues relative to potential radiological weapons. Several suggestions as to local-level policy are offered and discussed. Among these suggestions are the need for local law enforcement and policy decision makers to formally recognize the potential use of radiological weapons of mass contamination and the need to develop both protection strategies for …

A Status Report On Community Service Learning In The California State University For The 2001-2002 Academic Year, Season Eckardt

Higher Education

Community service and service learning arc long-standing touchstones in the mission and purpose of the California State University since the first campus was founded in 1857. Partnerships between local communities and CSU faculty and students make numerous goals achievable: they improve the quality of life across California, promote faculty research, and support CSU programs- all while students learn the value and satisfaction that comes from contributing to society. Policymakers and leaders of higher education have expressed renewed interest in utilizing service learning as a vehicle to instill civic values in students. All these elements have contributed to the profound advancement …

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing Feb 2003

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing

Books

Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. This study is an examination of two remarkable lives. Theirs is a story of dignified control over their destinies, displaying only rare flinching from …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A high diversity library of recombinant human antibodies was selected on complex antigen mixtures from midguts of female Anopheles gambiae Giles. The library of phage-displayed single chain variable region fragment constructs, derived from β-lymphocyte mRNA of naïve human donors, was repeatedly selected and reamplified on the insoluble fraction of midgut homogenates. Five rounds of panning yielded only one midgut-specific clone, which predominated the resulting antibody panel. In A. gambiae, the epitope was found throughout the tissues of females but was absent from the midgut of males. The cognate antigen proved to be detergent soluble but very sensitive to denaturation and …

Measuring Personality And Values Across Cultures: Imported Versus Indigenous Measures, Fanny M. Cheung, Shu Fai Cheung Feb 2003

Measuring Personality And Values Across Cultures: Imported Versus Indigenous Measures, Fanny M. Cheung, Shu Fai Cheung

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Cross-cultural studies of personality have shown cultural similarities and differences in the manifestation of personality traits. In interpreting cultural differences in personality traits, we should consider not only the experiences of people in different cultures, but also the measures adopted and the cultural orientations of researchers themselves. In this chapter, we discuss the considerations in adapting an instrument from one culture to another culture. We illustrate the alternative approach of developing an indigenous personality measure in the Chinese culture.

Designing Nutrition Education Programs To Reach Mexican American Populations, Sharon F. Robinson, Jenna Anding, Bertha Garza, Ileana Hinojosa Feb 2003

Designing Nutrition Education Programs To Reach Mexican American Populations, Sharon F. Robinson, Jenna Anding, Bertha Garza, Ileana Hinojosa

Journal of Extension

Over 6 million Mexican Americans live in the state of Texas. Hispanic women have a higher incidence of diet-related birth defects than the general population. To address this health disparity, an education outreach program was developed. A culture-centered approach consisting of the formation of a culturally diverse working team, client focus groups, materials development, pilot testing by trained paraprofessionals, and a day-long workshop for professional and lay educators was employed. This program used content specialists and local faculty to develop a relevant education program for a specific population.

Were Separate-But-Equal And Antimiscegenation Laws Constitutional?: Applying Scalian Traditionalism To Brown And Loving, Ronald Turner Feb 2003

Were Separate-But-Equal And Antimiscegenation Laws Constitutional?: Applying Scalian Traditionalism To Brown And Loving, Ronald Turner

San Diego Law Review

This Article examines the view, championed by Justice Scalia, that traditionalism can and should play a dispositive role in constitutional law and adjudication, and applies this view to the outcomes reached by the Court in Brown v. Board of Education and Loving v. Virginia. The author begins by examining Brown and Loving and the traditionalist arguments made to the Court by those who sought to preserve the challenged segregationist policies. He explores Justice Scalia's use of traditionalism in both Due Process and Equal Protection Clause cases, and then applies Scalia's traditionalism to the laws challenged in Brown and Loving. The …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The possibility to cross-species amplify microsatellites in fruit flies of the genus Ceratitis was tested with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by analysing 23 Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) microsatellite markers on the genomic DNA of three other economically important, congeneric species: C. rosa (Karsch), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. cosyra (Walker). Twenty-two primer pairs produced amplification products in at least one of the three species tested. The majority of the products were similar, if not identical in size to those expected in C. capitata. The structures of the repeat motifs and their flanking sequences were examined for a total of 79 …
