Assessing The Acceptance Of The New Environmental Paradigm In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jaclyn Rose Burke
Assessing The Acceptance Of The New Environmental Paradigm In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jaclyn Rose Burke
Masters Theses
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, there has been an expanding popular movement to protect the environment and a growing consciousness that humans are an integral part of nature. The New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) is a worldview that emphasizes the relationship that exists between humans and the environment. The purpose of this Master's Thesis is to assess Kalamazoo County, Michigan residents' attitudes on the environment based on their acceptance of the NEP. The acceptance of the NEP by Kalamazoo County residents was evaluated by residents' responses on a survey developed to measure their environmental attitudes. Kalamazoo County was found …
The Secret History Of Race In The United States, Daniel J. Sharfstein
The Secret History Of Race In The United States, Daniel J. Sharfstein
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
"Spencer v. Looney" was one of dozens of cases decided in the eras of slavery and segregation that hinged on the question of whether a plaintiff or defendant was white or black. During the past decade, legal historians have begun to excavate these bygone disputes, which involved wills, marriage and divorce, transportation, immigration and naturalization, and libel and slander. With few exceptions, two goals have motivated recent scholarship: proving that race is a social construction and showing how courts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries helped build America's racial infrastructure. This Essay presents a more complex picture of race …

The Enemy Within Islam, Laina Farhat-Holzman
Comparative Civilizations Review
The recent spread of political, radical Islam around the world has captured the attention of the secular world. This movement has launched a spate of violence and unrest, culminating in the al-Qaeda attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. Public interest in Islam has not been so keen since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979—another event that took the world by surprise. Political observers have pinpointed the Saudis as the source of the problem. Not only were the majority of the terrorist bombers Saudi, but also they were thoroughly indoctrinated into the severe Muslim Wahhabi sect that …

The Portrayal Of Men In Men's Bodybuilding And Fitness Magazines, Jeff Long
The Portrayal Of Men In Men's Bodybuilding And Fitness Magazines, Jeff Long
Student Work
Using Objectification theory this study examined several elements of the portrayal of male fitness models in three men’s bodybuilding and fitness magazines through qualitative and quantitative content analyses. The magazines ranged from an overall fitness orientation to a professional bodybuilding focus. A preliminary qualitative study developed coding categories to assess Body Type, Physical and Social Setting, Clothing and Role that were used in a main quantitative study examining male centered instructional bodybuilding and fitness articles. In Muscle and Fitness there was a balanced representation of all three body types. However, in Men’s Fitness the Strong Muscularity body type was the …
Accessibility, Settlement Dispersion, And Unemployment In Slovakia, Pavol Hurbanek
Accessibility, Settlement Dispersion, And Unemployment In Slovakia, Pavol Hurbanek
Student Work
The thesis examines the relationship between accessibility and unemployment and the relationship between settlement dispersion and unemployment in Slovakia. The two main hypotheses are as follows: First, the settlements with lower accessibility have higher rates of unemployment. Second, because the areas of dispersed settlement most likely experience poor accessibility, these areas have also higher rates of unemployment. While Slovakia is the main study area, additional analysis is conducted in the case-study region of the Myjava and Skalica Counties in the western part of Slovakia. Several methods are used to evaluate accessibility and settlement dispersion. Container approach and distance approach are …

Beyond Trashiness: The Sexual Language Of 1970s Feminist Fiction, Meryl Altman
Beyond Trashiness: The Sexual Language Of 1970s Feminist Fiction, Meryl Altman
Journal of International Women's Studies
It is now commonplace to study the beginning of second wave US radical feminism as the history of a few important groups – mostly located in New York, Boston and Chicago – and the canon of a few influential polemical texts and anthologies. But how did feminism become a mass movement? To answer this question, we need to look also to popular mass-market forms that may have been less ideologically “pure” but that nonetheless carried the edge of feminist revolutionary thought into millions of homes. This article examines novels by Alix Kates Shulman, Marge Piercy and Erica Jong, all published …
Mothers Of Future Kings: The Madonna Redux Phenomenon, Colleen Denney
Mothers Of Future Kings: The Madonna Redux Phenomenon, Colleen Denney
Journal of International Women's Studies
The visual culture that created Diana was motivated by Victorian constrictions of motherhood that enforced notions of stability and lineage. This article examines the cultural metaphors of nurturance – the “Madonna redux phenomenon” – in images of Diana, and in her predecessor Princess Alexandra. I argue that images of royal motherhood are staged affairs, constructed and performed as part of the Princesses’ main role as dutiful and loving mothers. Finally, I point up how moments of agency can be achieved within these images and how Diana, “the postfeminist princess,” embraced these moments.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

War At Home Spouse Abuse In Military Families, Carrie L. Gray
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the patterns, tendencies, and physical severity of spouse abuse in military families. The demographic makeup of military families in many ways parallels that of violent families in the civilian community. Therefore, this study will determine if certain variables will be similarly correlated in cases of wife abuse within military families as they are in civilian families. Although a significant amount of research has been conducted on spouse abuse in the last thirty years, family violence within military families has been virtually ignored. This study utilizes secondary data provided by the Navy Family Advocacy Central Registry located in …

The War On Terror: Constitutional Governance In A State Of Permanent Warfare, W. Wesley Pue
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article assesses Canada's principal legal responses to the challenge presented by terrorism in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. A review of major federal "anti-terrorism" legislation reveals a legislative response that fundamentally violates core constitutional principles while failing to significantly enhance public safety.
What's Law Got To Do With It?: Historical Considerations On Class Struggle, Boundaries Of Constraint, And Capitalist Authority, Bryan D. Palmer
What's Law Got To Do With It?: Historical Considerations On Class Struggle, Boundaries Of Constraint, And Capitalist Authority, Bryan D. Palmer
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article offers a preliminary theoretical statement on the law as a set of boundaries constraining class struggle in the interests of capitalist authority. But those boundaries are not forever fixed, and are constantly evolving through the pressures exerted on them by active working-class resistance, some of which takes the form of overt civil disobedience. To illustrate this process, the author explores the ways in which specific moments of labour upheaval in 1886, 1919, 1937, and 1946 conditioned the eventual making of industrial legality. When this legality unravelled in the post-World War II period, workers were left vulnerable and their …

After establishing the importance of the research question, the paper continues with a description ofa survey ofIWU students conducted in Spring 2003. Presentation and analysis of the results follow. The paper concludes with a discussion of potential policy changes that could lead to an increase in the number of IWU students who study abroad in the future.
Civil Disobedience And Academic Freedom, Leslie Green
Civil Disobedience And Academic Freedom, Leslie Green
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
What is the relation between the forms of principled law-breaking that we know as civil disobedience and the special rights of teachers and students that comprise academic freedom? It is argued that academic freedom does not give them a right to engage in civil disobedience, not even on campus. At the same time, however, academic freedom does protect them in studying, discussing, assessing, and even recommending civil disobedience--even when their opinions and recommendations are misguided or wrong. The subject is discussed in light of some recent cases.
It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd
It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Utilizing Cullen's (1994) Social Support Theory and Hunter's (1985) three dimensions of social life, this study is a quantitative, cross-sectional secondary data analysis designed to examine the relationship between institutional social support and rates of juvenile crime for counties and cities in Virginia for the year 2000. Resting on the contention that an inverse, significant relationship exists between measures of institutional support and rates of juvenile property and violent crime, this study examines types of support provided by the institutions of family, school, and the government. These measures of institutional support include 1) familial support: median income, marriage support; 2) …
Guided By God: The Catholic Church And Political Legitimacy In The Philippines, Steven B. Shirley
Guided By God: The Catholic Church And Political Legitimacy In The Philippines, Steven B. Shirley
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The developing world is witnessing a growing (some may say disturbing) trend towards “de-secularization” of national governments. This trend has been understudied and misunderstood over the past decade. Government experts and scholars alike too often view this trend through the lens of “threat” analysis and in so doing miss key cultural, historical, and political factors at work. This study attempts to redress this problem. By looking at political legitimacy and the role religious organizations such as the Catholic Church may play, a new understanding of how religious institutions can shape and mold governments and policies emerges.
This study focuses specifically …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Exposure To Risk, Gender, And Delinquency: An Exploratory Case Study, Rosanne D. Walters
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
This case study explored the interactive relationship between the type and level of risk experienced by males and females entering the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Home in 2000, differences in delinquent behaviors of males and females, and differences in responses to that behavior. The study was an outgrowth of a previous report to the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Home Utilization Task Force suggesting that females experienced a higher level of risk than males and that they were detained for lesser offenses. The study also was motivated by data from the Office on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention indicating that there had been …
Self-Reported Factors Influencing The Retention Of Non-Traditional Female Students At Lake Michigan College, Nancy Lynn Johnson
Self-Reported Factors Influencing The Retention Of Non-Traditional Female Students At Lake Michigan College, Nancy Lynn Johnson
Masters Theses
Many non-traditional female students enter post-secondary education by attending a community college. The vast majority of these adult women must simultaneously balance work, family, and educational priorities. Maintaining this tenuous balance is pivotal to persistence. This descriptive study discusses the reasons for delayed entry into post-secondary education by non-traditional female students at Lake Michigan College. It examines how life transitions later influence the decision to attend. Common barriers to persistence and factors supporting persistence are heard through the self-reported experiences of non-traditional female students attending this community college. Recommendations for programming and service delivery are made. Suggestions for further study …
An Evaluation Of Lawlike Generalizations In Relationship Marketing: Method And Application, Wolfgang Hinck
An Evaluation Of Lawlike Generalizations In Relationship Marketing: Method And Application, Wolfgang Hinck
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate lawlike generalizations in relationship marketing (RM) and their contribution to the scholarly advancement of the marketing discipline. The current lack of such systematic evaluation is of significance not only because the contribution to progress constitutes a general requirement for all research streams in marketing, but also because an evaluation would solve the ongoing discussion about the substance and role of RM.
As a requirement for the evaluation, necessary and collectively sufficient criteria for lawlike generalizations have to be identified and operationalized. Because the marketing discipline lacks both a commonly agreed-upon set of …
Population Mobility High-Risk Environments And The Diffusion Of Hiv/Stds: A Community Based Study In Southwest China, Hongyun Fu
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Globally, population migration has been associated with the spread ofHIV/STDs in many countries. A similar trend has been observed in China from the very beginning of the HIV epidemic, but empirical research is very limited. Furthermore, the previous studies mainly focused on the micro impact of migration on individual migrant's risky behaviors. The impact of population mobility on the general population, especially on non-migrant residents, has been ignored. Using data collected from a specially designed community level survey, which was conducted in a province in the Southwest of China, this study examines the macro-level association between temporary migration and the …
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The popular vision of the Great Plains as a region of ongoing population decline is only partly appropriate. In a fundamental transformation of the population geography previously set in the late 19th century, there is an emerging divide between growing metropolitan centers concentrated along the region's periphery and a vast interior struggling to hold its traditional rural population. The size and geographical distribution of population within the Great Plains region is examined over time with the aid of cartographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Intercensal net migration rates estimated using the vital statistics-based residual method are mapped by county …

Relationship Between Community Satisfaction And Migration Intentions Of Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Though many nonmetropolitan counties in the United States experienced population gains in the 1990s, many of the nonmetropolitan counties in the Great Plains continued to experience population declines. Thus, the reasons that people are moving need to be explored. This paper examines possible reasons by analyzing the relationship between community satisfaction and migration intentions of nonmetropolitan Nebraskans. Data used for this analysis were from an annual survey mailed to 6,500 residents living in nonmetropolitan counties in the state. The survey data were analyzed at two levels. First, demographic comparisons were made between those who planned to stay in their communities …
