FOCUS on Boise State

Each day, undergraduate students at Boise State University head to campus laboratories, computer rooms or into the field to conduct cutting-edge research with professors in a wide range of subject areas. In the process, they're gaining invaluable experience and helping to reshape the university and its future. In this issue, we explore some of the reasons why undergraduate research is integral to the university and its mission, highlight a few of the many research collaborations, and feature an essay from a professor on what he gains from working with undergraduates. Cover by Bob McDiarmid.

Segregation And Racial Preferences: New Theoretical And Empirical Approaches, Stephen L. Ross Apr 2003

Segregation And Racial Preferences: New Theoretical And Empirical Approaches, Stephen L. Ross

Economics Working Papers

This paper investigates the role of preferences for social interactions or outcomes in determining observed patterns of racial segregation. In the theoretical section, consumers maximize utility by allocating time between personal time and social interactions within their neighborhood, and the dual of this problem is used to investigate the bidding and sorting of households over racial composition. The models suggests that African-American households may outbid white households to reside in white neighborhoods, and unlike previous models of segregation this model is consistent with either racial segregation or integration. In the empirical analysis, proxy variables are developed for unobservable attributes that …

Ethnicity, Governance And The Provision Of Public Goods, Mwangi S. Kimenyi Apr 2003

Ethnicity, Governance And The Provision Of Public Goods, Mwangi S. Kimenyi

Economics Working Papers

Ethnicity is an important institution and one that impacts on the quality of governance. This paper focuses on the behavior of ethnic groups and specifically on their impact on the provision of public goods. The paper shows that ethnic heterogeneity results in under-provision of non-excludable public goods. On the other hand, such societies associate with provision of patronage goods. The paper proposes some areas of research such the economics of ethnic institutions, empirical evidence of the role ethnic groups on public goods provision, tax compliance and institutional reforms to improve governance.

Senior Honors Theses

Learning preferences as defined by Rita and Kenneth Dunn, Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory, and Walter Barbe and Raymond Swassing's learning modalities model are discussed. The historical progression of home education is related to an overview of the curriculum options available to home educators. Learning modalities are applied to home education in order to give parents practical advice and help for teaching their children. The Swassing-Barbe Modality Index was given to home school parents and children in order to identify their learning modalities.

The Effects Of Parents' Psychiatric Disorders On Children's High School Dropout, Virginia Wilcox-Gök, Farah Farahati, Dave E. Marcotte

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Mental illness is known to impose substantial direct costs on the ill. In this paper, we examine an indirect cost of mental illness. We investigate the effect of parents’ mental illnesses on the schooling of their children. Using data from the National Comorbidity Survey, we find that parents’ mental illnesses increase the probability of high school dropout of children, though these effects differ markedly with disease. We also find that parental mental illness has more consistently negative effects on girls than on boys. These findings indicate that parental mental illness can have a powerful impact on children’s schooling and subsequently …

The Politics Of Exclusion And Paranoia: The Know Nothing Party As A Case Study In Frustration-Aggression Analysis, Elton W. Weintz

Masters Theses

Historically, American democracy has been based on a policy of exclusion where the empowered have enjoyed the luxury of deciding which groups would be eligible to participate fully in the great American experiment--a flawed system based upon discriminatory notions of class, racism, sexism, and nativism. Richard Hofstadter's paranoia interpretation--that irrational beliefs in conspiracies led to civic participation in exclusionary movements--provides some rationale for this exclusionary behavior.

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, this paper applies the social psychological theory of frustration-aggression analysis in conjunction with Hofstadter's paranoia interpretation in an attempt to further understand exclusionary behavior in American history. In particular, this …
