Self-Help Groups As Financial Institutions: Policy Implications Using A Financial Model, R. Srinivasan Apr 2003

Self-Help Groups As Financial Institutions: Policy Implications Using A Financial Model, R. Srinivasan

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper uses a spreadsheet financial model to identify key-financial policy parameters that influence the performance of self-help groups (SHGs) whose primary activity is microfinance. The focus is on long-run (ten-year) performance. There is bad news for those policy makers and practitioners who focus unduly on growth as measured by loan activity. A conservative financial policy that does not inject external funds into the SHG in the initial years and, when it does, does so with moderation, seems appropriate in the long run. Additionally, a high loan interest rate policy produces SHGs that are strong financial institutions.

Environmental Sensitivity And Youthful Participation In Outdoor Recreation, Tinelle Bustam Apr 2003

Environmental Sensitivity And Youthful Participation In Outdoor Recreation, Tinelle Bustam

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Over the last twenty-five years, a number of researchers have attempted to understand what makes people care about the environment or what underlies "environmental sensitivity." Early research on significant life experiences of environmental activists suggested that such appreciation began at a young age and in outdoor settings (Tanner, 1980; Peterson, 1982). Dunlap and Heffernan (1975) found a relationship between participation in nature-based recreation and environmental sensitivity. Other studies have found no relationship (Geisler, Martinson, & Wilkening, 1977) or only weak to moderate relationships between outdoor activity and environmental concern (Van Liere & Noe, 1981; Jackson, 1987; Theodori, Luloff, & Willits, …

This first issue of You’ve Gotta Read This was published in May 2003 and featured fabulous clip-art for the cover and recommendations from 37 faculty members. The most popular title for this year? The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

The Headaches And Pleasures Of General Education, Albert Borgmann Apr 2003

The Headaches And Pleasures Of General Education, Albert Borgmann

Philosophy Faculty Publications

General education is one of the glories of American higher education; it is one of its major headaches as well. The concern for general education highlights some of the distinctive virtues of American universities and colleges. First it illustrates the ability to be open to different traditions and to forge them into something new. Liberal education, the older and still widely used term for general education, is the bequest of British higher education where it was taught to an elite of young gentlemen, destined for careers in politics and the professions. The notion of the well‐rounded gentleman in turn goes …

A Process And Outcome Evaluation Of A Shelter For Homeless Young Women, Theresa Dostaler, Geoffrey Nelson Apr 2003

A Process And Outcome Evaluation Of A Shelter For Homeless Young Women, Theresa Dostaler, Geoffrey Nelson

Psychology Faculty Publications

To evaluate the processes and outcomes of a short-term shelter, both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered via participant observation, focus group interviews with shelter staff and residents, and individual interviews with a sample of 40 young women who had been homeless prior to using the shelter. The process evaluation showed that the shelter staff strived to utilize an empowerment philosophy in their relationships with residents, but that there were many challenges to implementing this philosophy. The outcome evaluation showed that, at a 3-month follow-up, the participants reported significant improvements in housing, income, independence, and life satisfaction, but most continued …

Family And Career Decision-Making Among Lds Women At Brigham Young University, Jennifer M. Vigil, Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill, Rebecca R. Nichols

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This study explores how college-aged women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) make decisions about choosing a career or staying home full-time. It examines how committed they are to multiple role planning, what influence their mothers have on their decision-making process, how much they know about the roles they will assume in the future, how certain they are about choosing these roles, and how involved they are in the decision-making process itself. The LDS Decision-Making (LDSDM) scale was answered by 149 junior and senior women at Brigham Young University. Four factors were found …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker Apr 2003

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined differences in student achievement on the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Mathematics Test by their teachers’ years-of-experience teaching mathematics. Data examined were mean scale scores of fourth and eighth grades in five sample groups: national (public and private school students combined), national public school students, and Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas public school students. These states were chosen because of their statewide systematic school reform efforts. The research question was: Are mathematics scores of students of more experienced mathematics teachers higher than those of students of less experienced teachers? The National Assessment of Educational Progress data …

Cultural Diversity's Impact On Firm Performance: The Moderating Influence Of Diversity Initiatives And Socialization Tactics, Amy Mcmillan-Capehart Apr 2003

Cultural Diversity's Impact On Firm Performance: The Moderating Influence Of Diversity Initiatives And Socialization Tactics, Amy Mcmillan-Capehart

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to test the hypothesized relationships between cultural diversity and firm performance. Specifically, this dissertation examines whether or not socialization tactics and diversity initiatives moderate the relationship between diversity and firm performance. This dissertation uses ROA, ROE, and employee productivity in order to capture an accurate picture of firm performance.

My second purpose is to test competing hypotheses that are based on different theories. Theories relating to diversity suggest that there may be both positive and negative effects of a heterogeneous workforce. Therefore, it is necessary to isolate those instances in which diversity can …
