Integration At Mid-Life: An Analysis Of The General Social Surveys On Time Use, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando Jun 2003

Integration At Mid-Life: An Analysis Of The General Social Surveys On Time Use, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This paper examines the economic inclusion, political participation, and social belonging of Canadians at mid-life. These are used as indicators of dimensions of integration, an individual-level equivalent of social cohesion. Time allocations among major activities such as paid work, domestic work, and volunteering of those aged 30-54 are analyzed using data gathered through the General Social Survey on Time Use in 1986, 1992, and 1998. The influences of individual, family, and community attributes on inclusion through economic activities, participation through volunteer work with organizations, and feeling of belonging to communities are also examined using the data from the 1998 GSS …

How Cohesive Are Canadian Cmas? A Measure Of Social Cohesion Using The National Survey Of Giving, Volunteering, And Participating, Rajulton Fernando, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Roderic Beaujot Jun 2003

How Cohesive Are Canadian Cmas? A Measure Of Social Cohesion Using The National Survey Of Giving, Volunteering, And Participating, Rajulton Fernando, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Social cohesion is a concept difficult to define and to measure. As there can be many definitions, so there can be many measurements. The main problem, either in defining or measuring the concept, is its multi-level and multi-dimensional nature. At one extreme, country is the most commonly used level to view social cohesion but measurement at this level is of little use for interventions. At the other extreme, community is the most useful level but it is a social construct for which data are difficult to obtain, given the administrative boundaries used in social surveys. As an initial attempt to …

Stories Of Mothers And Child Welfare (Summary Report), Gary Cameron, S. Hoy Jun 2003

Stories Of Mothers And Child Welfare (Summary Report), Gary Cameron, S. Hoy

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

The voices we hear describing the lives of mothers who come into contact with child welfare agencies are usually those of service providers and researchers. How do mothers make sense of their own lives and what happened to their families when they became involved with child welfare? This report provides an opportunity to listen to what 16 of these mothers had to say over conversations averaging 5 - 6 hours with each woman. Aspects of these stories will be familiar to some readers. Nonetheless, these stories challenge both popular and professional perceptions of who these mothers are and how they …

A Workplace Study Of Three Children’S Mental Health Centres In Southern Ontario, Carol A. Stalker, Deena Mandell, Karen Frensch, C. Harvey Jun 2003

A Workplace Study Of Three Children’S Mental Health Centres In Southern Ontario, Carol A. Stalker, Deena Mandell, Karen Frensch, C. Harvey

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Rationale Recent cuts to resources for children and families requiring children’s mental health services coupled with an increase in the number of children needing these services have left staff in many agencies feeling extremely challenged in providing positive service environments for children and families. In this context, agencies are faced with the challenge of providing working environments that attract and retain staff, particularly in children’s residential mental health services. The purpose of this study was to explore sources of job satisfaction and stress, and why employees stay with and leave these organizations, in an effort to understand what contributes to …

A Workplace Study Of Four Southern-Ontario Children’S Aid Societies (Full Report), C. Harvey, Deena Mandell, Carol A. Stalker, Karen Frensch

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Rationale Children’s Aid Societies have experienced extensive change since the implementation of recent child welfare reforms in Ontario. Agencies are facing a number of challenges including recruiting and retaining staff, high workloads, extensive requirements for documentation and administration, and less time to serve families and children. The purpose of this study was to understand employee experiences as workers in child welfare.

Research Design A survey was distributed to employees of four children’s aid societies. Completion of the survey was voluntary and all individual responses were kept confidential. Completed surveys were returned directly to researchers. Six to eight months after the …

Raising And Preserving For Review Claims For Expanded Protections For Criminal Defendants Under The New Mexico State Constiution, Bruce Evan Thompson Jun 2003

Raising And Preserving For Review Claims For Expanded Protections For Criminal Defendants Under The New Mexico State Constiution, Bruce Evan Thompson

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

I intend for this paper to lay a basic groundwork for defense counsel in New Mexico to use in the preservation and advocacy of criminal defendants\' state constitutional claims. It bears stating at the outset that perhaps the greatest pitfall for an advocate in this field is for one to make the assumption that, because the New Mexico Supreme Court has refused to grant a particular constitutional protection in the past, that ruling cannot be successfully challenged in the future. For reasons that will become clear, New Mexico\'s "interstitial" approach to constitutional jurisprudence permits (and in fact encourages) appellate review …

No Expressly Religious Orthodoxy: A Response To Steven D. Smith, Andrew Koppelman Jun 2003

No Expressly Religious Orthodoxy: A Response To Steven D. Smith, Andrew Koppelman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Steven Smith is correct: the Barnette principle as Justice Jackson states it is too sweeping to make sense. The principle has not done the mischief Smith attributes to it, however, because it has been subjected to some familiar qualifications that dispel his objections. Jackson's dictum applies only to religion, not to other possible objects of official orthodoxy. Even with respect to religion, it only prohibits action that explicitly endorses a religious view. This rule serves the purposes of the Establishment Clause well. In light of our deep disagreement about religious matters, and the obvious fact that religion can and does …

Law And Cultural Conflict, Robert Post Jun 2003

Law And Cultural Conflict, Robert Post

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The relationship between law and cultural conflict is a subject that is relevant to numerous contemporary disagreements about the substance of rights. The Article does not attempt to intervene into these disagreements, but instead to construct a common framework of analysis that might facilitate constructive dialogue among those who would otherwise disagree. The framework offers three dimensions in which the relationship of law to cultural conflict might be assessed.

The first dimension concerns the sociological relationship between law and culture. The simplest model of this relationship, which the Article calls the "Devlin model," assumes that law is the expression of …

Megalithic Architecture At The Site Of Victoria, Quintana Roo, Jennifer P. Mathews

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The Application Of Missing Data Estimation Models To The Problem Of Unknown Victim/Offender Relationships In Homicide Cases., Wendy C. Regoeczi, Marc Riedel Jun 2003

The Application Of Missing Data Estimation Models To The Problem Of Unknown Victim/Offender Relationships In Homicide Cases., Wendy C. Regoeczi, Marc Riedel

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Homicide cases suffer from substantial levels of missing data, a problem largely ignored by criminological researchers. The present research seeks to address this problem by imputing values for unknown victim/offender relationships using the EM algorithm. The analysis is carried out first using homicide data from the Los Angeles Police Department (1994-1998), and then compared with imputations using homicide data for Chicago (1991-1995), using a variety of predictor variables to assess the extent to which they influence the assignment of cases to the various relationship categories. The findings indicate that, contrary to popular belief, many of the unknown cases likely involve …

Perceptions Of Safety And Crime In Rural Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell Jun 2003

Perceptions Of Safety And Crime In Rural Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

There is a common perception that rural areas are generally safer compared to urban areas. However, many changes are occurring in rural Nebraska. Increased media attention has been given to methamphetamine use in rural areas of the state. Given all that, how safe do rural Nebraskans feel? Do they believe crime has increased in their community? Do their opinions differ by their region, size of their community or their occupation?

This report details 3,087 responses to the 2003 Nebraska Rural Poll, the eighth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about personal safety. …

Nebraska Rural Physician Satisfaction & Retention Survey: Appendix A: Survey (With Results), Suzanne M. Minarick, John C. Allen

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This paper examines the factors that influence the satisfaction and retention of family and general practice physicians in Nebraska’s 87 non-metropolitan counties. Extensive research has previously been done in the area of rural physician recruitment. This research project compares the existing research with current trends in physician recruitment. In addition, it provides further insight into the less-thoroughly studied area of rural physician retention.

Satisfaction with practice-related and lifestyle factors is measured and compared with the level of influence of those same factors in the initial practice selection decision. Demographic characteristics are also considered in the analysis of data and resultant …
