Concentrated Hog Feeding Operations And The Animal Rights Movement: A Website Diagnostic Frame Analysis, Venita M. Quamme
Concentrated Hog Feeding Operations And The Animal Rights Movement: A Website Diagnostic Frame Analysis, Venita M. Quamme
Theses and Dissertations
The volume of online texts designating hog concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) as problematic serves to illustrate an emerging social problem. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate how five online animal advocate organizations present hog CAFOs as problematic, and warranting intervention. The units of study include: The Animal Welfare Institute, Farm Sanctuary, Humane Farming Association, Humane Society of the United States, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Together, they represent an integral part of the animal rights movement, a descriptive label that does not imply consensus regarding animal “rights.”

Self-Assessed Dakota Language Fluency And Suggested Strategies For Language Revitalization On The Spirit Lake Nation, Ruth Ellen De Larios
Theses and Dissertations
This study provides a background of the status of the Dakota language as it is spoken on the Spirit Lake Nation in northeast North Dakota. The study examined Dakota language fluency, environments where the language is used, and suggested strategies for revitalization. In order to determine the aforementioned, a brief Survey for Grant for Revitalization of Tribal Languages (Survey) was implemented. This assessment of community fluency and interest was essential to obtaining an Administration for Native Americans grant to develop a language revitalization effort that came to be known as the Dakota la UnspepHLanguage Preservation Program.
The Survey for Grant …

From Theory To Practice: Developing And Implementing An Asset-Building Program For Milwaukee Public Housing Residents, Stephanie Montgomery
From Theory To Practice: Developing And Implementing An Asset-Building Program For Milwaukee Public Housing Residents, Stephanie Montgomery
Student Research – Stevenson Center
Beginning in August 2002, I had the opportunity to complete my Professional Practice in Community Development at the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM), a mid-sized public housing authority, which provides affordable housing to low-income individuals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, through public housing, rent assistance and homeownership programs. In recent years HACM has shifted its focus away from bricks and mortar (constructing and managing low income housing) towards a more comprehensive strategy, designed to not only provide low income families and individuals with affordable housing, but also assist to residents in achieving long-term economic self-sufficiency and in escaping poverty. …

Following The Man On The Clapham Omnibus: Social Science Evidence In Malpractice Litigation, Richard O. Lempert
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
This article responds to proposals to admit statistical evidence from empirical studies of actual health care practices to prove prevailing health practice standards in malpractice litigation by arguing that the case for doing so has numerous weaknesses that advocates of admitting such data commonly ignore. A fundamental concern is that the standard of practice defense co-evolved with prevailing modes of proof and might have been different had proof through experts not allowed for an aspirational as well as an empirical element to reach the jury. The article also argues that generating reliable statistical evidence of standard medical practice can be …

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This paper illustrates the implementation of a community project developed based on a partnership between the community and the local university in Bungo and Tebo Regencies. The project aims to develop the local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as a strategic step to increase the regional economy, taking the form of a so- called Community–University Partnership Program in Bungo and Tebo Regencies. The Community–University Partnership methodology employs the Service Learning (SL) method to increase MSME actors’ competence in terms of financial literacy, product packaging, and marketing. The effectiveness of the SL-based Community–University Partnership Program was measured using a quantitative …

The Formative Evaluation Of A Family Life Education Website, Brynn Marie Steimle
Theses and Dissertations
Hundreds of family life education (FLE) websites are now available on the Internet, allowing individuals and families unprecedented access to FLE information. Evaluation is critical to ensuring the quality of and improving FLE websites, yet few FLE website evaluations have been conducted. This study formatively evaluated a new family life education website, called Forever Families (http://www.foreverfamilies.net or http://foreverfamilies.byu.edu), assessing website utilization using Web-based software, and receiving visitor feedback through the use of an online survey. Quantitative survey items assessed knowledge gains, how interesting the content was, usefulness, attractiveness, ease of use of the website, whether or not the site met …
Bounded Rationality, The Doctrine Of Impracticability, And The Governance Of Relational Contracts, Donald J. Smythe
Bounded Rationality, The Doctrine Of Impracticability, And The Governance Of Relational Contracts, Donald J. Smythe
ExpressO
This article uses a behavioral economics approach to analyze the effects of the doctrine of impracticability on “relational” contracts -- long-term contractual agreements that are typically adapted to changed circumstances and unforeseen contingencies as they arise. In contrast to conventional law and economics studies, the article concludes that the impracticability doctrine has the potential to improve the efficiency and productivity of a wide range of long-term contractual agreements, and offers normative guidelines as to how the doctrine should be applied. The article also examines and rejects various philosophical objections to the impracticability doctrine, such as the arguments that it interferes …

Avatares Del Proceso De La Institucionalización De La Literatura En Chile En Las Revistas Literarias Del Siglo Xix, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Career Readiness And Preparation Criteria In Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs, Kathleen E. Klein
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The purpose of the research study was to examine the history and philosophy of certain very distinct dance degree programs. The dissertation is intended to serve as a resource to benefit faculty and administrators in American undergraduate and graduate level dance programs. The primary goal was to recognize emergent themes aimed at stronger outcomes for students seeking a career track in dance. Beginning with an overview of the historical development of dance and dance education in the United States, the study closely examined the current cultural, educational, and political structures, functions, and mechanisms which influence prevailing public views of this …
Falun Gong In The United States: An Ethnographic Study, Noah Porter
Falun Gong In The United States: An Ethnographic Study, Noah Porter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, has been described in many ways. It has been called qigong, one of many schools of physical exercises that aim at improving health and developing "supernatural abilities". Scholars and mainstream media have referred it to as a "spiritual movement" or religion, although practitioners claim it is not a religion. It has been called a cult, in the pejorative sense rather than in a sociological context, by the Chinese government and by some Western critics. In the writings of Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, it is referred to in different ways, …

Does Information Technology Provide Competitive Advantage And Improve Performance? An Empirical Study Of Trading Companies In Brazil, Ruth Clarke, Marcilio Machado
Does Information Technology Provide Competitive Advantage And Improve Performance? An Empirical Study Of Trading Companies In Brazil, Ruth Clarke, Marcilio Machado
HCBE Faculty Presentations
Growing investment in information technology applications creates a need to understand the proper integration of these tools into strategic decision making of the firm. This study discusses the impact of global information and communication technologies on competitiveness and performance of Brazilian trading companies. Using resource based theory as a starting point, we examine how information technology, as an internal resource, can provide competitive advantage and what impact information technology produces on competitiveness of Brazilian export intermediaries. The study implements a replicable model (CAPITA) developed by Sethi and King (1994), to investigate these relationships in the emerging market of Brazil. The …
