Law Enforcement Dilemmas In The Investigation Of Internet Sex Crimes Against Minors, Melissa Wells

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines dilemmas associated with the investigation of Internet sex crimes against minors. Data collected from a national sample of law enforcement agents provide insights into complications of three types of cases: (1) Internet crimes against identified victims, (2) Internet solicitations to undercover law enforcement, and (3) Internet child pornography crimes.

A mail survey of United States law enforcement agencies identified two samples of Internet sex crimes against minors. The first sample consisted of 464 investigations in which an arrest was made, and the second sample included 68 cases in which no arrest was made. Telephone surveys were used …

Social Workers' Perceptions Of Family Preservation Programs, Elain M. Maccio, David Skiba, Howard J. Doueck, Karen A. Randolph, Elisabeth A. Weston, Lorie E. Anderson

Journal of Family Strengths

The passage of the Adoptions and Safe Families Act of 1997, with its focus on child safety and concurrent planning, has presented family preservation workers with new challenges and new opportunities. Twenty volunteers from a large comprehensive social service agency were interviewed to determine their experiences with two models of family preservation—Multisystemic Therapy (MST) and Traditional Family Preservation Service (TFPS) or practice as usual. Workers from both programs were able to articulate values consistent with family preservation as important strengths of the programs— keeping families together and empowering families for example. Information from referring agencies was described as variable and …

The Constitutional Underpinnings Of Homelessness, Ann Burkhart

Articles

In Lindsey v. Normet, 1 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a state wrongful detainer statute against tenants who withheld their rent after the Bureau of Buildings of Portland, Oregon declared their house to be uninhabitable. 2 In reaching its holding, the Court stated that it was "unable to perceive in [the Constitution] any constitutional guarantee of access to dwellings of a particular quality, or any recognition of the right of a tenant to occupy the real property of his landlord beyond the terms of his lease without the payment of rent." 3 The Court did not address the separate issue …

Battered By The System: How Advocates Against Domestic Violence Have Improved Victims' Access To Child Support And Tanf, Naomi Stern Jan 2003

Battered By The System: How Advocates Against Domestic Violence Have Improved Victims' Access To Child Support And Tanf, Naomi Stern

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

For low-income women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence, the political and legal landscape at the federal level worsened with the enactment of the 1996 Welfare Act. Among many other changes, the Act increased penalties for mothers who fail to cooperate with their respective states in states' efforts to obtain child support from their children's father. As a result, many victims of domestic violence who seek child support and who are leaving their abusers often must choose between poverty and increased violence at their abusers' hands. The voices of state and local advocates against domestic violence are …

Tum The Wheel: Integral School Counseling For Male Adolescents, David Forbes

Publications and Research

In the wake of violent episodes committed by male youths in schools, many male adolescents grapple with the traditional norm of masculinity and the role it might play in contributing to such violence. School counselors need to address the developmental needs of all male youth, because schools play a significant role in the construction of male identities. This article formulates an overarching, inclusive model of integral counseling that enables school counselors to help male adolescents challenge the norm of conventional masculinity. The model draws from 3 areas: transpersonal counseling, holistic education, and mindful social action. The aim is to move …
