Processes For Nanomachining Using Carbon Nanotubes, Robert Ryan Vallance, Apparao M. Rao, M. Pinar Mengüç Dec 2003

Processes For Nanomachining Using Carbon Nanotubes, Robert Ryan Vallance, Apparao M. Rao, M. Pinar Mengüç

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents

Novel methods and devices for nanomachining a desired pattern on a surface of a conductive workpiece are disclosed. In one aspect, the method comprises using an electron beam emitted from one or more nanotubes to evaporate nanoscale quantities of material from the workpiece surface. The surface of the workpiece to be machined may be excited to a threshold energy to reduce the amount of power required to be emitted by the nanotube. In another aspect, a device is described for nanomachining a desired pattern on a surface of a conductive workpiece, comprising a vessel capable of sustaining a vacuum, a …

From Schweizerhalle To Baia Mare: The Continuing Failure Of International Law To Protect Europe's Rivers, Aaron Schwabach Dec 2003

From Schweizerhalle To Baia Mare: The Continuing Failure Of International Law To Protect Europe's Rivers, Aaron Schwabach

Law Faculty Scholarship

Beginning on January 31, 2000, at least 100,000 cubic meters of highly polluted water escaped from a tailings dam at the Aurul gold mine in Baia Mare, Romania. The water flowed into the Somes, Tisza, and Danube Rivers, causing enormous environmental damage. Most of the damage occurred in Hungary, downstream from Baia Mare. Hungarian politicians called the spill “the first, most serious environment[al] catastrophe in the 21st century,” and “the worst ecological disaster in central Europe since Chernobyl in 1986.”

More striking than the resemblance to the Chernobyl disaster, though, was the resemblance to another 1986 environmental catastrophe: the Sandoz …

Banking Sector: Developments, Challenges, And Opportunities, Ishrat Husain Dr. Dec 2003

Banking Sector: Developments, Challenges, And Opportunities, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Pakistan’s banking sector like many other developing countries had been faced with several problems and difficulties such as: (1) Most of the financial assets and deposits were owned by nationalized commercial banks (NCBs) which suffered from a highly bureaucratic approach, overstaffing, unprofitable branches and poor customer service. (2) NCBs along with specialized banks such as ADBP, IDBP and Development financial institutions such as NDFC had a high ratio of non-performing loans. (3) Banking industry faced a high tax rate, which affected its profitability and attractiveness for new entrants. (4) There was a proliferation of banks and some of them were …

Multiwavelength Modelocked Semiconductor Diode Laser, Peter Delfyett, Hong Shi Dec 2003

Multiwavelength Modelocked Semiconductor Diode Laser, Peter Delfyett, Hong Shi

UCF Patents

Single-stripe GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor optical amplifiers which simultaneously generates from four to more than twenty tunable WDM channels. A four channel version trsnsmits approximately 12 picosecond pulses at approximately 2.5 GHz for an aggregate pulse rate of 100 GHz. Wavelength tuning over 18 nm has been demonstrated with channel spacing ranging from approximately 0.8 nm to approximately 2 nm. A second version uses approximately 20 wavelength channels, each transmitting approximately 12 picosecond pulses at a rate of approximately 600 MHz. A spectral correlation across the multiwavelength spectrum which can be for utilizing single stripe laser diodes as multiwavelength sources in WDM-TDM …

Shroud Nozzle For Gas Jet Control In An Extreme Ultraviolet Light, Roy Mcgregor, Charles Clendening Dec 2003

Shroud Nozzle For Gas Jet Control In An Extreme Ultraviolet Light, Roy Mcgregor, Charles Clendening

UCF Patents

A gas jet nozzle for an extreme-ultraviolet light source, including a housing having a front and back. The housing is coupleable to a primary gas source and a secondary gas source and is adapted to expel primary has and secondary gas from the housing front. The housing has a gas=expelling primary channel located centrally within the housing and a gas-expelling secondary channel proximate the primary channel. The primary channel may be circular and a secondary channel may be annular, surrounding the primary channel. A secondary gas stream expelled from the secondary channel restricts the lateral expansion of a primary gas …

Spatiotemporal Databases: Models For Attracting Students To Research, Ágnes Bércesné Novák, Peter Revesz, Zsolt Tuza Dec 2003

Spatiotemporal Databases: Models For Attracting Students To Research, Ágnes Bércesné Novák, Peter Revesz, Zsolt Tuza

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In higher education professors often make much effort to introduce their students to research. Unfortunately, the present standard database systems curriculum is composed of well-settled subjects that do not lead to research. The challenge is to bring the research frontier closer to students at beginner level. In this paper we describe how it can be done in the area of spatiotemporal databases. We propose a new database systems curriculum and illustrate its benefits by mentioning several highly succsesful student projects in some recent experimental introductory database systems courses that followed the new curriculum.
