The main goal of this chapter is to pave the road for the subsequent chapters. Then, the third chapter tests the overreaction hypothesis using monthly data for stocks listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange over the 1993–2002 period. Similar to the findings of De Bondt …

Market Valuation Of Corporate Diversification In The Presence Of Internal Capital Markets In Emerging Countries, Supannee Buasook

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study examines the valuation of corporate diversification in three emerging countries: Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Over the period of study (1992–2001 for Thailand and 1994–2001 for Indonesia and the Philippines), it is found that there is evidence of diversification discount in all three countries. The largest amount of discount exists in the Philippines (60.1%), followed by Indonesia (25.5%) and Thailand (15.1%).

Then, the sample is divided into two sub-periods: before the crisis (1992–1996) and after the crisis (1997–2001). Before the crisis, the diversification discount existed only in the Philippines, with the average of 49%. There is not enough …

Normal Mixture Models For Gene Cluster Identification In Two Dimensional Microarray Data, Eric Scott Harvey Jan 2003

Normal Mixture Models For Gene Cluster Identification In Two Dimensional Microarray Data, Eric Scott Harvey

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on methodology specific to microarray data analyses that organize the data in preliminary steps and proposes a cluster analysis method which improves the interpretability of the cluster results. Cluster analysis of microarray data allows samples with similar gene expression values to be discovered and may serve as a useful diagnostic tool. Since microarray data is inherently noisy, data preprocessing steps including smoothing and filtering are discussed. Comparing the results of different clustering methods is complicated by the arbitrariness of the cluster labels. Methods for re-labeling clusters to assess the agreement between the results of different clustering techniques …

Evaluating A Life Skills Curriculum For Adolescent Males At New Direction, Fitzgerald B. Mcqueen Jan 2003

Evaluating A Life Skills Curriculum For Adolescent Males At New Direction, Fitzgerald B. Mcqueen

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation sought to evaluate a real-life Life Skills Curriculum for adolescent males with behavioral, emotional, and mental disabilities. The previous Life Skills curricula had not been revised since 1996. Survey and interview data obtained from counselors, current and past adolescents, teachers, and parents indicated that the previous Life Skills curricula failed to meet the adolescent’s needs, and was impractical and irrelevant.

Planned strategies included (a) evaluating the Life Skills curriculum for relevance and practicality to “here and now” issues of adolescents in an educational treatment facility, (b) evaluating the Life Skills curriculum for enhancement of adolescent’s verbal and …

The Role Of Meat, Poultry, And Fish Consumption In The Occurrence Of Rheumatoid And Other Forms Of Arthritis, Asnake Hailu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis or rheumatism are now the leading cause of disability in the United States. The etiology and pathogenesis are less understood and available treatment options are not always satisfactory. This dissertation measures the prevalence and cumulative incidence of rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis or rheumatism, and examines any associations with current and lifetime consumption of meat, poultry, and fish (meat) using the Adventist Health Study and the Adventist Mortality Study databases. From these databases, it was possible to reconstruct a prospective cohort, obtain self-reported information on demographic characteristics, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, other …

Measuring The Prevalence And Assessing The Determinants Of Depression Among Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Implications For Treatment, Drew Edwards

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) frequently suffer from isolation and loneliness; have ineffective coping skills, poorly developed social networks and low self-esteem; and struggle with socioeconomic stressors (Dow & Mest, 1997). As a result, such people are frequently characterized in the literature as a population of chronically ill patients with a higher than normal prevalence of emotional distress (Van Ede, Yzermans & Brouwer, 1999). A study was conducted to (1) measure the prevalence of depression among clinic patients with COPD, (2) determine the demographic and clinical variables, and (3) assess the implications for treatment.

The Effect Of Reading Performance Standards On Teacher Instructional Methods, Elaine H. Thurmond Jan 2003

The Effect Of Reading Performance Standards On Teacher Instructional Methods, Elaine H. Thurmond

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this applied dissertation was to determine if implementing America’s Choice (National Center on Education and the Economy, 1999)/Georgia’s Choice design to teach reading changed the instructional methods of 4th-grade teachers and improve 4th-grade students’ reading performance as measured by the Developmental Reading Assessment (Beavers, 2002). These changes were evidenced in lesson plans, instructional strategies, classroom observations, and teacher surveys.

This applied dissertation report describes how reading performance standards using the America’s Choice design were implemented in 4th-grade classrooms in a suburban elementary school with 5 fourth-grade teachers, 1 enhanced instruction program teacher, and 108 fourth-grade students. A …
