The evaluation of the initiative consisted of a formative evaluation to determine if the program was implemented and a summative evaluation to determine if …

Increasing Enrollment At Community Christian School, Thomas R. Lamborn Jan 2003

Increasing Enrollment At Community Christian School, Thomas R. Lamborn

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a program to increase enrollment at Community Christian School (CCS). For the years 2000-2002, enrollment declined from a high of 243 to 200 students. As part of the problem, the faculty turnover was high, creating instability with the staff and concern on the part of parents. CCS had a faculty turnover rate of 48% and 45% for the same 2 years. Other possible causes included insufficient marketing of the school, weak instruction in the high school, low faculty salaries, and insufficient interaction between the administrators and the faculty.

A more definitive marketing plan was developed to be …

Preemption’S Market Participant Immunity—A Constitutional Interpretation: Implications For Living Wage And Labor Peace Policies, Roger C. Hartley Jan 2003

Preemption’S Market Participant Immunity—A Constitutional Interpretation: Implications For Living Wage And Labor Peace Policies, Roger C. Hartley

Scholarly Articles

Nationwide, state and local governments are adopting policies that oblige their private-sector business partners to pay employees a "living wage" and/or to agree in various ways not to use public funds to finance anti-union activities. Conventional labor preemption principles would invalidate many of these conditional business arrangements unless they are immunized by preemption's market participant doctrine, first applied in the now decade-old Boston Harbor case. Accordingly, the focus of preemption litigation challenging living wage and labor peace policies ordinarily is the immunity's applicability. Because its reach is subject to widely varying interpretations, there exists a need to fix workable and …

Latin American Hybrid Constitutionalism: The United States Presidentialism In The Civil Law Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski Jan 2003

Latin American Hybrid Constitutionalism: The United States Presidentialism In The Civil Law Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski

Scholarly Articles

Commentators have often suggested that Latin American countries incorporate more features of parliamentary systems or experiment with "mixed" models of governance. This article presents arguments that such a recommendation should be carefully analyzed. First, the article demonstrates that, since the early stages of post-colonial history, the Latin American states modified U.S. presidentialism. The states have already experimented with many features of a parliamentary system, adopted a model of judicial review which was an amalgam of several well-known models, and wrestled with their own ethnic, cultural and legal problems not linked to the U.S. system of governance. Second, the article examines …

Guidelines With Commentary For The Evaluation Of Legal Externship Programs, J.P. "Sandy" Ogilvy Jan 2003

Guidelines With Commentary For The Evaluation Of Legal Externship Programs, J.P. "Sandy" Ogilvy

Scholarly Articles

This Article is part of a larger project to create a set of guidelines, with commentary, for the evaluation of clinical legal education programs. The Externship Guidelines ("Guidelines") are published here with the hope and expectation that the legal education community will read, analyze, and comment on them. As a result of that input, subsequent drafts of the Guidelines should reflect a broad consensus among legal educators with respect to the standards for good legal externship programs and a methodology for evaluating legal externship programs. It also is anticipated that working on guidelines in the discrete area of legal externships …

The Ebmt Activity Survey On Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Novel Instrument For Quality Control, Alois Gratwohl, Helen Baldomero, Alvaro Urbano Ispizua Jan 2003

The Ebmt Activity Survey On Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Novel Instrument For Quality Control, Alois Gratwohl, Helen Baldomero, Alvaro Urbano Ispizua

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The hematopoietic stem cell transplant activity survey of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) represents a novel modern tool in health care management. Introduced in 1990, it captures annual numbers of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) by indication, donor type and stem cell source from each individual European transplant team. Supplemented by demographical data and economic factors, team density and transplant rates can be calculated and the impact of economics on HSCT rates can be assessed. As documented in the present analysis, a total of 19,668 HSCT were performed in Europe in 2001 by 599 teams in …

The Pathology Of Echinococcosis And The Current Echinococcosis Problem In Western Turkey (A Report Of Pathologic Features In 80 Cases, M. Şerefetti̇n Canda, Meri̇h Güray, Tülay Canda

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Echinococcosis is an infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. It manifests as cyst formations in various organs, affecting both humans and animals. The cysts may be unilocular (E. granulosus) or multilocular (E. multilocularis). Multilocular cysts have particular significance, for their macroscopic appearance is reminiscent of malignant tumors and their prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study is to describe our cases and to start a discussion on the current echinococcosis problem in İzmir, western Anatolia. The pathological features of 80 cases of echinococcosis diagnosed at Dokuz Eylül University Pathology Department over the last 21 years have been …

Icts As An Aid To Inclusivity?: Barriers To Benefits For Adult Learners In The Ennis Information Age Town, Anna Greenhalgh Jan 2003

Icts As An Aid To Inclusivity?: Barriers To Benefits For Adult Learners In The Ennis Information Age Town, Anna Greenhalgh

Masters

The subject of this thesis is the potential role of ICTs as a means of addressing social exclusion. ICTs have been recognised for their double-edged promise: while they may open opportunities in work, education and social practices, their benefits may be inaccessible to disadvantaged members of society. This subject is explored by means of a case study of adult learners who have been exposed to a ‘social experiment’ involving technological endowment of an Irish community: the Ennis Information Age Town project. This large-scale private sector initiative, which ran between 1997 and 2002, has the potential to inform future ICT projects …

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus Jan 2003

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus

Scholarship

Ketoximes undergo deprotection in CH3CN/acetone/H2O (3:6:1) in the presence of 20–40 mol% BiBr3/5 mol% Bi(OTf)3. Bismuth(III) salts are relatively non-toxic, insensitive to air and inexpensive. These features coupled with the use of a relatively non-toxic solvent system make this method an attractive alternative to existing routes for deprotection of ketoximes.

My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred Jan 2003

My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred

The Bridge

They met in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark. Ray Garred was a United States Navy sailor with a squadron of battleships sent by President William Howard Taft on a goodwill tour of England, the Scandinavian capitals, and Kronstadt, St. Petersburg's port city and Russian naval base. She was a Danish girl, Olavia Frederiksen, who had spent four years in the United States as a domestic servant and had learned English in an evening school for immigrants. The year was 1911, summer time. Tivoli, as many tourists know, is a natural place for visitors to Copenhagen to congregate, and it was where a …

Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen Jan 2003

Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen

The Bridge

The poem by Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty defines the classical model of immigrants fleeing from poverty, oppression, or persecution. They are refugees, forced by intolerable circumstances to move from their homeland. Less stereotypic is the highly skilled or educated individual who makes a positive choice towards better opportunity. These immigrants tend to come as individuals or as a nuclear family and are less likely to live in or identify with an ethnic group. They assimilate more readily, especially if they have some English before arrival, while keeping closer ties with relatives and making more frequent trips to …

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen Jan 2003

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen

The Bridge

On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …

The Sentences That Bind (The States), James Sample Jan 2003

The Sentences That Bind (The States), James Sample

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In certain circumstances, federal district court judges impose criminal sentences that are required to be consecutive to yet-to-be-imposed state criminal sentences, including those state sentences that may, in fact, never be imposed. The federal courts of appeals are divided as to whether such sentences are statutorily authorized under the applicable provision, 18 U.S.C. § 3584(a). This Note argues that the sentences are not authorized under the statute, and further, that the sentences infringe on states' and defendants' rights.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

It has been recently found that the initial-energy effect, which is associated with the finite initial energy of carriers entering the multiplication region of an avalanche photodiode (APD), can be tailored to reduce the excess noise well beyond the previously known limits for thin APDs. However, the control of the initial energy of injected carriers can be difficult in practice for an APD with a single multiplication layer. In this paper, the dead-space multiplication recurrence theory is used to show that the low noise characteristics associated with the initial-energy effect can be achieved by utilizing a two-layer multiplication region. As …
