Origins Of Isoprenoid Diversity: A Study Of Structure-Function Relationships In Sesquiterpene Synthases, Bryan T. Greenhagen Jan 2003

Origins Of Isoprenoid Diversity: A Study Of Structure-Function Relationships In Sesquiterpene Synthases, Bryan T. Greenhagen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Plant sesquiterpene synthases catalyze the conversion of the linear substrate farnesyl diphosphate, FPP, into a remarkable array of secondary metabolites. These secondary metabolites in turn mediate a number of important interactions between plants and their environment, such as plant-plant, plant-insect and plant-pathogen interactions. Given the relative biological importance of sesquiterpenes and their use in numerous practical applications, the current thesis was directed towards developing a better understanding of the mechanisms employed by sesquiterpene synthases in the biosynthesis of such a diverse class of compounds. Substrate preference for sesquiterpene synthases initially isolated from Nicotiana tabacum (TEAS), Hyoscyamus muticus (HPS) and Artemisia …

The Democracy Of Political Contributions In The American States, Kihong Eom Jan 2003

The Democracy Of Political Contributions In The American States, Kihong Eom

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The intention of campaign finance regulations was to reduce the influence of special interest groups while increasing citizen contributions. Critics have suggested an unintentional consequence of this policy of increasing bias in campaign contributions in favor of incumbents. These claims of intentional and unintentional consequences, however, have rarely been tested. My dissertation examines the intentional and unintentional consequences of campaign finance regulations in the American states. This study adopts a theoretical framework emphasizing the different effects of regulations on two distinctive types of contributors. A particularistic contributor, whose motivation is influencing policy, is likely to be affected by contribution limits. …

The Fragile Promise Of Provisionality, James S. Liebman, Charles F. Sabel Jan 2003

The Fragile Promise Of Provisionality, James S. Liebman, Charles F. Sabel

Faculty Scholarship

It is a pleasure to address such well-informed, insightful and well-intentioned responses to our Article. Intellectual predispositions and differing assessments of the prospects of reform aside, it is striking that so many participants have firsthand experience of the new model school, the new politics in all their mystery, and even non-court-centric judicial review. It is clear that something is afoot, and not just in academic circles, when observers as different as Diane Ravitch, the critic of Deweyan latitudinarianism, and Gordon Whitman, the community organizer, are both surprised to discover that standardized testing can go hand in hand with individualized education …

A Public Laboratory Dewey Barely Imagined: The Emerging Model Of School Governance And Legal Reform, James S. Liebman, Charles F. Sabel Jan 2003

A Public Laboratory Dewey Barely Imagined: The Emerging Model Of School Governance And Legal Reform, James S. Liebman, Charles F. Sabel

Faculty Scholarship

The American public school system is in the midst of a vast and promising reform. The core architectural principle of the emergent system is the grant by higher-level authorities – federal government, states, and school districts – to lower level ones of autonomy to pursue the broad goal of improving education. In return, the local entities – schools, districts, and states – provide the higher ones with detailed information about their goals, how they intend to pursue them, and how their performance measures against their expectations. The core substantive commitment of the emergent system is the provision to all students, …

Disasters First: Rethinking Environmental Law After September 11, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 2003

Disasters First: Rethinking Environmental Law After September 11, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

Many environmental statutes were enacted, or at least spurred along, in direct response to disasters. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 followed from the Santa Barbara Oil Spill; the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) resulted from the chemical gas disaster in Bhopal, India; the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) was sparked by the Love Canal incident; and the Oil Pollution Acte was a reaction to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have led to the Homeland Security Act and to several other enactments. The collapse of the …

Art Or Propaganda: A Historical And Critical Analysis Of African-American Approaches To Dramatic Theory, 1900–1965, Henry D. Miller Jan 2003

Art Or Propaganda: A Historical And Critical Analysis Of African-American Approaches To Dramatic Theory, 1900–1965, Henry D. Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation surveys African American approaches to dramatic theory from 1900 to 1965, demonstrating that in the period the issue dominating the field was a great debate that defined black drama as art on the one hand and as propaganda on the other. In an African American cultural history replete with covert and overt struggles for social and political equality, the art or propaganda question necessarily reached a magnitude and importance found in no other area of twentieth-century dramatic theory. The comprehensiveness of the debate that interrogated this question and its historical and cultural depth has largely gone untreated. Moreover, …

Attempting To Discuss Race In Business And Corporate Law Courses And Seminars, Cheryl L. Wade

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The challenges of teaching corporate social responsibility and good corporate citizenship have shifted as political and social climates have changed in New York, the United States, and around the world. I discuss some of those challenges in this Article. My primary focus, however, is the challenge of talking about race in business and corporate law courses and seminars.

Play For Mortal Stakes: Funerals As Modernist Acts Of Fiction, Janine Marie Utell Jan 2003

Play For Mortal Stakes: Funerals As Modernist Acts Of Fiction, Janine Marie Utell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the ritualization of death in British literature of the interwar period and its implication for narrative and genre. The authors under consideration include poets of the Great War (Robert Graves, Charles Sorley, Isaac Rosenberg, the Sitwells), and later writers such as Katherine Mansfield, Aldous Huxley, Virginia Woolf, W. H. Auden, Ivy Compton-Bumett, and James Joyce. Using the methodology of ritual studies, an interdisciplinary approach combining the perspectives of religion, anthropology, and literary criticism, I examine how these texts create a fictive space in which death can be ritualized and how this process …

A Product Architecture-Based Conceptual Dfa Technique, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, Varghese J. Kayyalethekkel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A conceptual design for assembly (DFA) method is introduced in this paper. The method incorporates DFA analysis into the conceptual design phase. Current DFA methods, essentially all of which are post-design DFA analyses, are reviewed with emphasis on the popular Boothroyd and Dewhurst method. The product architecture-based conceptual DFA method developed and presented in this article uses two relatively new concepts: the functional basis and the method of module heuristics. The functional basis is used to derive a functional model of a product in a standard language and the module heuristics are applied to the functional model to identify a …

The Ebmt Activity Survey On Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Novel Instrument For Quality Control, Alois Gratwohl, Helen Baldomero, Alvaro Urbano Ispizua Jan 2003

The Ebmt Activity Survey On Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Novel Instrument For Quality Control, Alois Gratwohl, Helen Baldomero, Alvaro Urbano Ispizua

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The hematopoietic stem cell transplant activity survey of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) represents a novel modern tool in health care management. Introduced in 1990, it captures annual numbers of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) by indication, donor type and stem cell source from each individual European transplant team. Supplemented by demographical data and economic factors, team density and transplant rates can be calculated and the impact of economics on HSCT rates can be assessed. As documented in the present analysis, a total of 19,668 HSCT were performed in Europe in 2001 by 599 teams in …

The Pathology Of Echinococcosis And The Current Echinococcosis Problem In Western Turkey (A Report Of Pathologic Features In 80 Cases, M. Şerefetti̇n Canda, Meri̇h Güray, Tülay Canda

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Echinococcosis is an infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. It manifests as cyst formations in various organs, affecting both humans and animals. The cysts may be unilocular (E. granulosus) or multilocular (E. multilocularis). Multilocular cysts have particular significance, for their macroscopic appearance is reminiscent of malignant tumors and their prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study is to describe our cases and to start a discussion on the current echinococcosis problem in İzmir, western Anatolia. The pathological features of 80 cases of echinococcosis diagnosed at Dokuz Eylül University Pathology Department over the last 21 years have been …

Icts As An Aid To Inclusivity?: Barriers To Benefits For Adult Learners In The Ennis Information Age Town, Anna Greenhalgh Jan 2003

Icts As An Aid To Inclusivity?: Barriers To Benefits For Adult Learners In The Ennis Information Age Town, Anna Greenhalgh

Masters

The subject of this thesis is the potential role of ICTs as a means of addressing social exclusion. ICTs have been recognised for their double-edged promise: while they may open opportunities in work, education and social practices, their benefits may be inaccessible to disadvantaged members of society. This subject is explored by means of a case study of adult learners who have been exposed to a ‘social experiment’ involving technological endowment of an Irish community: the Ennis Information Age Town project. This large-scale private sector initiative, which ran between 1997 and 2002, has the potential to inform future ICT projects …

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus Jan 2003

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth Bromide-Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Joshua Arnold, Patrick Hayes, Robert Kohaus

Scholarship

Ketoximes undergo deprotection in CH3CN/acetone/H2O (3:6:1) in the presence of 20–40 mol% BiBr3/5 mol% Bi(OTf)3. Bismuth(III) salts are relatively non-toxic, insensitive to air and inexpensive. These features coupled with the use of a relatively non-toxic solvent system make this method an attractive alternative to existing routes for deprotection of ketoximes.

My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred Jan 2003

My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred

The Bridge

They met in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark. Ray Garred was a United States Navy sailor with a squadron of battleships sent by President William Howard Taft on a goodwill tour of England, the Scandinavian capitals, and Kronstadt, St. Petersburg's port city and Russian naval base. She was a Danish girl, Olavia Frederiksen, who had spent four years in the United States as a domestic servant and had learned English in an evening school for immigrants. The year was 1911, summer time. Tivoli, as many tourists know, is a natural place for visitors to Copenhagen to congregate, and it was where a …

Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen Jan 2003

Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen

The Bridge

The poem by Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty defines the classical model of immigrants fleeing from poverty, oppression, or persecution. They are refugees, forced by intolerable circumstances to move from their homeland. Less stereotypic is the highly skilled or educated individual who makes a positive choice towards better opportunity. These immigrants tend to come as individuals or as a nuclear family and are less likely to live in or identify with an ethnic group. They assimilate more readily, especially if they have some English before arrival, while keeping closer ties with relatives and making more frequent trips to …

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen Jan 2003

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen

The Bridge

On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …
