Orthodoxy Vs. Compassion, Jayme C. Wintish Dec 2003

Orthodoxy Vs. Compassion, Jayme C. Wintish

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Antonia Bird’s 1995 film “Priest” illuminates the significance of the humanity of Jesus, as does The Gospel of Luke. The controversial issues of homosexuality, the seal of confession, and the oath of celibacy are examined from a human perspective throughout “Priest.” This film makes it apparent that when we apply the humanity of Jesus to these issues, there is a revelation that the Catholic Church acts in opposition to the Jesus represented in Luke. The Gospel of Luke depicts Jesus as a man with compassion for all human beings. …

Humanism And Religion: How To Use One To Understand The Other, Manar Darwish Dec 2003

Humanism And Religion: How To Use One To Understand The Other, Manar Darwish

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Humanism is a concept that was more realized than discovered during the Renaissance era (cultural awakening) in Europe during the fourteenth century. Since then, it has developed in the way we look at, not only the arts and architecture, but also the way we view religion. It helps incorporate ideas and ethics of human action to how we focus on the belief, values, and morals we derive from religion. If anything, humanism has helped the spiritual form of religion to grow. However, it is not in any way, shape, …

Neighborhood Voices: Getting It Together -- Connecting Local Neighborhoods And National Advocates, Anne Pasmanick, National Neighborhood Coalition Dec 2003

Neighborhood Voices: Getting It Together -- Connecting Local Neighborhoods And National Advocates, Anne Pasmanick, National Neighborhood Coalition

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

This report, focusing on the national relationship to local organizations, local and regional coalitions, and the forging of complementary relationships, shows that the work of advocates based in Washington can be bolstered by a renewed immersion in the day-to-day challenges of "local" groups. The frustrations of the "local" groups can be mitigated with a deeper appreciation of the constrained realities of federal advocacy in a period of devolution, retrenchment in social services and relentless assault on the role of government in providing basic supports for people and their communities. The evaluation was constructed using a total of 216 surveys that …

A Modeling Experiment On The Grounding Of An Ice Shelf In The Central Arctic Ocean During Mis 6, Martin Jakobsson, M Siegert, Mark Paton Dec 2003

A Modeling Experiment On The Grounding Of An Ice Shelf In The Central Arctic Ocean During Mis 6, Martin Jakobsson, M Siegert, Mark Paton

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

High-resolution chirp sonar subbottom profiles from the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean, acquired from the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 1996, revealed large-scale erosion of the ridge crest down to depths of 1000 m below present sea level [Jakobsson, 1999]. Subsequent acoustic mapping during the SCICEX nuclear submarine expedition in 1999 showed glacial fluting at the deepest eroded areas and subparallel ice scours from 950 m water depth to the shallowest parts of the ridge crest [Polyak et al., 2001]. The directions of the mapped glaciogenic bed-forms and the redeposition of eroded material on the Amerasian side of the …

The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan Dec 2003

The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper explores the performance impact of recent changes in foreign shareholdings and boardroom reforms in Japan. Empirical research on the impact of reform on the Japanese corporate governance system could provide useful lessons for their European counterparts who are themselves facing similar pressures to reform. We found that although participation of outside directors in strategic decision-making was associated with positive stock returns, the increase in the ratio of outside directors, the separation of the board members and executive officers, and the reduction of board size were not related to firm performance.

Geologic Feature Prediction Using Roof Bolter Drilling Parameters, Benjamin T. Mirabile Dec 2003

Geologic Feature Prediction Using Roof Bolter Drilling Parameters, Benjamin T. Mirabile

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The design of a safe and efficient roof support system is essential for any underground coal mining operation. All underground coal mines in the United States install roof bolts with a roof bolter as the primary means of supporting the mine roof. Proper application of roof bolting is dependent upon knowledge of the mine roof geology.;Recently developed control and data acquisition technologies allow the drilling performance of these roof bolters to be monitored on a real-time basis. Drilling data collected from these machines can be used to determine geological features present in the mine roof. A J. H. Fletcher & …

The objective of this stud is to compare the efficacy between mobilization with movement (MWM) and end-range mobilization techniques (EMTs) in the management of adhesive capsulitis. Eighteen and twenty-two patients from MWM and EMT groups, respectively, who returned after two-week follow-up were evaluated. This was a randomized, evaluator-blind, parallel comparison study. Active and passive range of motion (ROM) for flexion, internal and external rotation, abduction and pain scale were assessed regularly by the same physical therapist. Pain reduction was observed in most of the patients. The proportion of patients with the same or worse condition after one month of follow-up …

The Effect Of Personal And Managerial Capitalism On Firms' Capabilities In Colombia's Grupos Económicos, Carmen Leonor Martinez-Lopez Dec 2003

The Effect Of Personal And Managerial Capitalism On Firms' Capabilities In Colombia's Grupos Económicos, Carmen Leonor Martinez-Lopez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Researchers have investigated business groups or grupos económicos and personal and managerial capitalism as separate topics. This dissertation integrates these concepts in order to study the effect of personal and managerial capitalism on firms' performance in Colombia's grupos económicos. Colombian grupos económicos were selected as the sample for this study for a number of reasons. For example, Colombian is ranked first in Latin America in the overall ranking for world competitiveness for countries with a population greater than 20 million (The World Competitiveness Year book, 2003). Although small by international standards (Reinhardt and Peres, 2000), since at least the …
