Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to develop a service-learning program for Scottsdale Community College (SCC) which is one of only two Maricopa Colleges that do not have a service-learning program.

Five research questions were addressed in this dissertation. Development and evaluation problem-solving methodologies were employed throughout this study. Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were used to guide the data collection, using a service learning questionnaire, faculty and agency surveys, interviews, and two case studies.

The research revealed that several factors must be in place prior to implementation in order to insure the success of the program. 1) Service-learning must …

Gay Science As Law: An Outline For A Nietzschean Jurisprudence, Jonathan Yovel Jan 2003

Gay Science As Law: An Outline For A Nietzschean Jurisprudence, Jonathan Yovel

Cardozo Law Review

The main question examined in this study is not merely how a Nietzschean critique of law would look had Nietzsche ever applied his genealogical method to the question of law, but also what positive function Nietzschean philosophy may ascribe to law - and how law must then be transformed. The methodological parable imagines a "post-genealogy" or "post-ressentiment" phase of the human condition, akin to the Marxist "post-revolutionary" phase: How would law look for the person of power - overman or otherwise - who needs to live among others? How is normativity possible - what are its forms and …

Development Of Strategies To Increase The Enrollment And Retention Of Female Engineering Honor Students At Purdue University With A Plan For Evaluation And Implementation, Gayle E. Hartleroad

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Purdue University Schools of Engineering committee, charged with development of a new strategic plan, set a recruitment and retention goal to “. . . increase the percentage of women undergraduates in engineering to 30 percent” (Purdue University Schools of Engineering Compton Committee, 2002).

A ten-year decline in female enrollment at Purdue University’s Schools of Engineering became a topic of true concern, especially to the Freshman Engineering Honors Program. This enrollment decline is exceedingly problematic because the Schools of Engineering has had a reputation of graduating a nationally known, large population of female engineers. The previously noted goal of 30% …

Development Of A Sports Management Option To The Associates Degree In Health And Exercise Science At Camden County College, With A Plan For Implementation And Evaluation, Nicholas J. Dicicco

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The department of health and exercise science at Camden County College (CCC) offers certificate, and degree programs. The degree program is its largest. The problem is that the curriculum in this program has not evolved to keep pace with advances in the field. This has led to a disconnect between the four-year institution program offerings in this field, and the program offerings at CCC, a trend of declining enrollments, and the loss of credits upon transfer by students in the degree program.

As a response to this problem, a sport management option to the curriculum was developed, along with a …

Scaffolding Transfer Activities Through The Use Of Concept Maps To Enhance Adaptive Problem Solving, James Jay Houdeshell

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The use of concept mapping following the Schwartz and Bransford (1998) protocols were tested as a scaffolding intervention with ill- and moderately well-structured transfer activities to determine the impact on transferring those skills to the solution of new problems. This study included three faculty members, six course sections, and a total of 55 students conducted at a large midwestern community college. All students completed well-structured pretest and posttests that measured their declarative, structural, and procedural knowledge skills in basic statistics and problem solving tools. Half the students completed a summary page describing the problem solving approaches for two contrasting cases. …

This study investigated whether infusing web-based computer technology into the global history curriculum could increase the percentage of students achieving mastery level and increase student interest and motivation in schoolwork. Studies have shown that achievement does increase when computer technology is utilized in the classroom because it individualizes the educational process; incorporates constructivist learning …
