Vocabulary Acquisition And The Generation Effect, Barbara Anne Badgett Jan 2003

Vocabulary Acquisition And The Generation Effect, Barbara Anne Badgett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated two methods of inducing the Generation Effect and how its principles might be incorporated in vocabulary acquisition. Subjects attempted to learn 22 unfamiliar vocabulary words under one of three conditions. (1) definition-only control subjects repeatedly wrote each word and definition; (2) sentence generation subjects wrote each word and definition and then wrote a meaningful sentence using that word; and (3) definition generation subjects read the words embedded in context sentences and extrapolated and wrote the word meanings. Subjects were tested following a distracter task, 48-hours later, and again 21-days later. Significant main effects were found for encoding …

An Exploration Of Attributional Style Using The Descriptive Experience Sampling Method, Nicole A Cavenagh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the association between cognitive style and depression. Phase I: 195 participants completed questionnaires that assessed cognitive style and psychological distress. Among these participants the expected relationships were found between depression, anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity, attributional style, and rumination; Phase II: Six participants selected based on their attributional style engaged in Descriptive Experience Sampling, which entails wearing a small device that will beep at random intervals, recording their awareness at the sound of the beep, and being interviewed within twenty-four hours of doing so. The inner experiences revealed by DES did not generally show the patterns suggested by current …

Qualitative Scoring Procedures For The Detection Of Malingering Using The Wechsler Memory Scale - Third Edition, Joshua E Caron Jan 2003

Qualitative Scoring Procedures For The Detection Of Malingering Using The Wechsler Memory Scale - Third Edition, Joshua E Caron

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Individuals undergoing neuropsychological evaluation are often involved in litigation for compensation. Consequently, much incentive to perform poorly on neuropsychological assessments exists. Thus, sophisticated detection methods are desirable. One promising approach may be to utilize qualitative scoring that provides information regarding the test taking strategy. Many current methods use a single quantitative score to discriminate people who malinger cognitive deficits, which may overlook sensitive information and be less accurate. This study developed and applied qualitative scoring procedures for the WMS-III and evaluated them using four experimental groups: sophisticated malingerer, naive malingerer, normal control, and brain damage. Results were mixed. When added …

Poly(Pyridinium Salt)S Exhibiting Liquid-Crystalline And Light-Emitting Properties, James Joseph Cebe Jan 2003

Poly(Pyridinium Salt)S Exhibiting Liquid-Crystalline And Light-Emitting Properties, James Joseph Cebe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The research presented in this thesis is based on the synthesis and characterization of poly(pyridinium salt)s containing tosylate and triflimide counterions that possess both liquid-crystalline properties as well as light emitting properties. Both the solution-state and solid-state emission behavior of these synthesized materials were investigated. They possessed several emission peaks in their spectra ranging from 280 nm to about 550 nm. Some of these polymers were found to form liquid-crystalline properties in common organic solvents such as methanol and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), while others were found to exhibit a liquid-crystalline phase upon melting, and are so-called thermotropic liquid crystals. The polymers …

Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas Jan 2003

Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Educators attempts to meet the needs of all students become more difficult as school districts are forced to reduce spending which may result in increased class sizes, elimination of second language and enrichment programs, and a reduction in school personnel at school sites. With these budget cuts the demands placed on educators will be even greater. Teachers will be forced to implement new strategies to ensure that no child is left behind. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of converging behaviorist and constructvist theories into classroom management and instructional practices. Three groups of students were randomly …

A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer Jan 2003

A Controlled Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Mental Skills Program For Ncaa And Youth Club Swimmers, Kevin Matthew Lancer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous studies have established that mental skills training is an effective intervention for improving performance in athletes. Relaxation, imagery, and mental preparation interventions have demonstrated efficacy in the improvement of athletic performance. However, relaxation combined with imagery is more effective than either one alone. Similarly, past studies have indicated mental preparation interventions may be more effective in the improvement of athletic performance when combined with other interventions. In team sports such as swimming, optimum performance has been found to improve cohesion. However, whether cohesion leads to improvements in sports performance is undetermined. In this study, a multiple baseline across team …

It can take a cyber terrorist seconds to break into a computer network, download information, and leave without a trace. There needs to be a comprehensive policy to combat the cyber terrorism threat; The National Information Policy is a set of ideas brought together to combat the threat of a cyber terrorist attack against the infrastructures of the United States. These ideas include: …

The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry Jan 2003

The Relationship Between Internal Service Components And Organizational Commitment In Fine-Dining Restaurants, Taryn M Perry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Due to increased competition in the restaurant industry, employers need to offer more than monetary compensation to attract quality employees. Offering these non-economic benefits, or internal services, can aid in keeping employees satisfied and committed to their organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between internal service components and organizational commitment. Data was collected from three fine-dining restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada. The original hypotheses were not supported by the research results. Yet, the study did yield evidence indicating that satisfaction with some aspects of internal services was influential in predicting organization commitment. Implications for management …

The Desire For Socio-Cultural Similarity In A Mate, Nelse M Ostlund Jan 2003

The Desire For Socio-Cultural Similarity In A Mate, Nelse M Ostlund

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Various socio-cultural domains were investigated for the influence they may have on mating decisions. 102 male and 114 female university students were presented "potential dates" from a mock Internet dating service. Potential dates were described in terms of their ethnicity, music interest, education, leisure interest, occupation, religious affiliation, political affiliation, language, socio-economic status, and style of dress. Potential dates' socio-cultural traits were determined randomly according to a computer program. For each of these domains, information was gathered regarding the level of similarity between participant and potential date. After reviewing all traits, participants rated the potential date in terms of how …

Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum Jan 2003

Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Contested claims about the public/private distinction have always been central to liberal democratic principles, to feminist ideologies, and (more narrowly) to domestic violence policymaKing Historically, treatment of domestic violence as a phenomenon that is relegated to the so-called 'private sphere' has served as justification for limiting such public policy remedies as prevention, intervention and recovery initiatives; From the grassroots battered women's movements of the 1970s to the current network of shelters, community agencies and advocacy groups, the last several decades have seen significant progress toward increasing public and political awareness of domestic violence. In the United States, many of these …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of year-round and traditional-calendar elementary art programs due to scheduling. By examining three elementary art specialists in two opposing schedules, the goal of the current study was to discover how the art specialists implemented their programs in different schedules. The research questions were: Did the art specialists have different professional experience or development training? How were the two programs different in time and scheduling? Were the class characteristics different? Did the instructional methods differ?;The findings concluded that implementing an art program in a year-round setting was more complex than a …

The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski Jan 2003

The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous studies have indicated that carrier status has little effect on self-concept. However, rather than examine autosomal recessive illnesses, wherein genetic responsibility is shared by both parents, the present study samples women at risk of being sole carriers of an X-linked hereditary disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Previous research most often assessed global self-esteem, thus problems in particular domains (such as future parental role or desirability as a mate) have generally been overlooked. Herein, a stigmatizing process is hypothesized whereby one aspect of the self, genetic identity, may be spoiled through a diminished sense of worthiness to reproduce. Family attitudes toward …

The Change In Systematic Risk After The 9/11 Events: An Analysis Of Restaurant Industry, Kihun Kim Jan 2003

The Change In Systematic Risk After The 9/11 Events: An Analysis Of Restaurant Industry, Kihun Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 (the 9/11 events) have had a dramatic impact on all aspects of American society. Although all facets of U.S. society have been affected by the September 11 attacks, it is hard to identify an industry that felt those effects more immediately than the hospitality industry. The aftermath of the events of 9/11 has forced the hospitality industry to face a disastrous fact in terms of decreased customer demand. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the average systematic risk, or beta, of the restaurant industry changed significantly after 9/11. More specifically, …

An Empirical Investigation Into The Relationship Between Computer Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, Experience, Support And Usage, Mary Helen Fagan, Stern Neill, Barbara Ross Wooldridge

Marketing

Organizations make significant investments in information technology. However, if individuals do not use information system applications as anticipated, successful implementation can be hard to achieve. In order to investigate some key factors thought to affect an individual's use of information technology, this study draws on Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), Triandis's Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB), and the computer anxiety literature to develop its conceptual model and research hypotheses. An empirical investigation (n=978) found support for the majority of the hypotheses. As suggested by SCT, experience and support were positively related to computer self-efficacy, and computer self-efficacy was negatively related …

Automated Methods Of Detecting Driver Distractions, Bryan L. Reimer Jan 2003

Automated Methods Of Detecting Driver Distractions, Bryan L. Reimer

Open Access Dissertations

With recent advances in wireless and computing technology, distracted driving has become commonplace on the roadway, extending far beyond the cell phone to other distractions affecting driver attention. This research builds upon a previous study that collected eye positions from a driver completing some routine tasks in an automobile. Traditional methods of eye movement analysis relied on manual identification of patterns from recorded scene video. However, these methods are not efficient when processing the large data sets acquired to discriminate significantly between a drivers' behavior under different road and distraction conditions. In this work, new procedures and tools for the …

The Station Nightclub Fire And Federal Jurisdictional Reach: The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act Of 2002, Peter Adomeit Jan 2003

The Station Nightclub Fire And Federal Jurisdictional Reach: The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act Of 2002, Peter Adomeit

Faculty Scholarship

The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act of 2002 has great potential for expediting The Station fire cases. The object of the Act is to place all of the cases from a mass disaster before a single judge, who can supervise discovery, then try the issue of liability, and either try or remand the issue of damages. How this new procedural tool will function is uncertain. The Act consolidates the power in one court to either urge the parties to accept a global settlement, or send the unresolved cases to trial. There are many unanswered questions. It is up to judges …

Global Changes In Scholarly Communication, Suzanne E. Thorin Jan 2003

Global Changes In Scholarly Communication, Suzanne E. Thorin

Librarian Publications

For more than a decade, the cost of print and electronic journals, particularly in the sciences, has increased rapidly at the same time that the amount of research being reported via published articles has grown exponentially. With academic libraries being less and less able to purchase the journals needed for their communities, the use of the term scholarly communication has evolved to illustrate the breakdown of the process of traditional scholarly publication; that is, as a means to disseminate research results, the present system of scholarly communication can no longer meet the needs of the scholarly community at large.

When …
