Gulf and Caribbean Research

Near the conclusion of the GCFI meeting and its special MPA symposium a workshop was convened to address the topic of Human system connectivity: a need for MPA management effectiveness. The title was inspired by the marine science sessions that examined facets of ecosystem connectivity. The social scientists, MPA managers, and marine ecologists present thought that our understanding of MPAs would be enhanced by a session in which the human system and its connectivity, both to the marine system and within itself, was prominent. Treatment Of Adynamia In Aphasia, Anastasia M. Raymer Jan 2003

Treatment Of Adynamia In Aphasia, Anastasia M. Raymer

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Transcortical motor aphasia (TCMA) is an acquired impairment of language expression that occurs following neurologic damage that affects left frontal cortex and spares perisylvian regions. In some individuals with TCMA, verbal expression is rendered nonfluent due to difficulty spontaneously initiating and elaborating upon verbal messages. Nonfluency arises from impaired activation of intended messages and inhibition of competing verbal expressions. This impairment of the intentional aspects of language expression can be termed 'adynamia.' Because adynamic forms of TCMA occur infrequently, few systematic treatment investigations have been reported for this condition. Behavioral treatments have been proposed to engage intact frontal regions to …

"How Many Lesbians Does It Take To Screw In A Light Bulb?", Janet M. Bing, Dana Heller

English Faculty Publications

This paper explores how humor reveals shared aspects of a culture of lesbian communities in the US. For lesbians, jokes and other forms of humor are an active, narrative means of self-construction and community imagining that help lesbians negotiate their positions both inside and outside mainstream culture. Whether consciously or unconsciously, much of lesbian humor challenges the dominant culture by rejecting its definitions of and presuppositions about lesbians, and by making lesbian experience central to its understanding of normalcy. Whereas the term "lesbian joke" usually activates a sex frame for the dominant culture, much humor created by and for lesbians …

The Impact Of Modern Finance Theory In Acquisition Cases, Rutheford B. Campbell Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In February of 1983, the Supreme Court of Delaware decided Weinberger v. UOP, Inc. The case holds that, in determining the present value of a corporation involved in an acquisition, courts are free to use “any techniques or methods [of valuation] which are generally considered acceptable in the financial community…”

The rule in Delaware prior to Weinberger required courts to determine the present value of a corporation by use of the Delaware block method of valuation exclusively. The Delaware block method, however, is a poor way to determine the present value of a corporation. As a result, even before the …

This study of overweight, elderly, rural African-American women with 7 pe 2 diabetes found they generally preferred smaller body sizes compared to previous studies. Normal to slim body images as presented in a photographic array were selected as being more attractive, less likely to have diabetes and hypertension, healthier and to be more …

A Renewal Of The Sacred Heart University Library: A New Role For The Sacred Heart University Library, Dennis C. Benamati

It is a pleasure to present this prospectus for renewal of University’s Library to the students, faculty, administration, alumni and friends of Sacred Heart University. This first part of a two-part plan is intended to provide a statement of how we will proceed toward transforming the Library into a center of learning. But this is only the starting point for a larger and more exciting plan. Part II will outline a new role for the Library—one befitting a 21st century university—that we believe will distinguish Sacred Heart University among its peers. One that, we hope, will contribute to the University’s …
