Assessing Spiritual Development In Business Students: Lessons Learned And A Suggested Process, Monty Lynn, Tim C. Coburn, J. Vincent Swinney, Michael Winegeart

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As Christian higher education institutions increasingly engage in continuous quality improvement and outcome measurement, research on spiritual development is filtering down to undergraduate business programs. This paper presents lessons learned from a pilot cross-sectional survey of Abilene Christian University undergraduate business students who completed the Faith Maturity Scale (Benson, Donahue & Erickson, 1993) and responded to other questions about faith development. Based on the results, a number of helpful observations were made for the ACU business program. A method and process for assessing spiritual development at multiple Christian colleges is proposed.

Should Marketing Managers Be Concerned About Attitudes Towards Marketing And Consumerism In New Zealand: A Longitudinal View, Steven Lysonski, Srinivas Durvasula, John Watson

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

New Zealand has gone through a radical metamorphosis since free market economics were introduced in the mid-1980s. Marketing managers are particularly interested in the views of consumers about issues dealing with marketing activities. Negative views could signal consumer backlash against free market activities. This study examines the views of consumers from 1986 to 2001 on a range of issues dealing with marketing and consumerism. The results clearly show that consumers are less negative about marketing and consumerism issues since 1986. It seems likely that New Zealand has evolved in terms of the consumerism life cycle over the last 15 years. …

Labor Relations In Major League Baseball, Andrew Zimbalist

Economics: Faculty Publications

This article explores some of the roots and processes of the contentiousness surrounding baseball labor relations, assesses the new collective bargaining agreement, and examines the history of negotiations that contributed to its structure. The author offers explanations why the 2002 labor agreement is not efficiently structured to achieve its professed goals and argues that the perceived tensions that afflicted the industry in 2002 are not likely to disappear by 2007, when more substantive changes will need to be made in order to avoid another confrontation between labor and management.

Deal Protection Provisions In The Last Period Of Play, Sean J. Griffith Jan 2003

Deal Protection Provisions In The Last Period Of Play, Sean J. Griffith

Fordham Law Review

The ability to protect mergers is important to both targets and acquirors. A series of recent Chancery Court decisions, however, challenges the validity of deal protection provisions in merger agreements and threatens the stability of Delaware's established change of control paradigm. This article argues that last period concerns animate the Chancery Court's decisions and finds, in the last period problem, a theoretical principle capable of harmonizing these decisions with existing jurisprudence and providing a coherent approach to the practical problems raised by deal protection provisions.

Impact Of A Young-Earth Creationist Apologetics Course On Student Creation Worldview, Tom Henderson, Steve Deckard, David A. Dewitt

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Science educators holding an evolutionary worldview are concerned about the teaching of young -Earth creationism (YEC) and generally oppose its presentation in public schools. This paper examines the influence of a YEC apologetics course on Creation and evolution worldview attitudes of Liberty University students. The creation worldview test (CWT) was administered and a total scale score along with three subscales scores in theology, science and age were analyzed. Student pre-test scores indicated some weaknesses, suggesting departure from a solid YEC worldview. Following the course, students shifted significantly toward stronger agreement with the YEC position in total score, science and age. …

Finding Common Ground: Collaboration Across The Disciplines In The Scholarship Of Teaching, Elaine K. Yakura, Curtis D. Bennett Jan 2003

Finding Common Ground: Collaboration Across The Disciplines In The Scholarship Of Teaching, Elaine K. Yakura, Curtis D. Bennett

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Many recent writings on the scholarship of teaching discuss the need to locate this scholarship within the disciplines. The authors argue that while scholarship within the disciplines is important, it should not come at the expense of work across the disciplines. They demonstrate the usefulness of cross-disciplinary collaboration for the scholarship of teaching and learning through the specific example of how collaboration contributed to their understanding of the role of such scholarship in the teaching of mathematics and negotiations courses. The authors also outline some of the pitfalls of cross-disciplinary collaboration, and they offer suggestions for beginning collaborative initiatives.

The Ghana Community-Based Health Planning And Services Initiative: Fostering Evidence-Based Organizational Change And Development In A Resource-Constrained Setting, Frank K. Nyonator, John Koku Awoonor-Williams, James F. Phillips, Tanya C. Jones, Robert A. Miller Jan 2003

Miller

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Research projects demonstrating ways to improve health services often fail to have an impact on what national health programs actually do. An approach to evidence-based policy development has been launched in Ghana that bridges the gap between research and program implementation. The Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative employs strategies tested in the successful Navrongo experiment to guide national health reforms that mobilize volunteers, resources, and cultural institutions to support community-based primary health care. Over the 1999 to 2002 period, 100 out of the 110 districts in Ghana adopted a CHPS initiative. This paper reviews features of the initiative …

Should Marital Property Rights Be Inalienable? Preserving The Marriage Ante, Julia Halloran Mclaughlin Jan 2003

Should Marital Property Rights Be Inalienable? Preserving The Marriage Ante, Julia Halloran Mclaughlin

Nebraska Law Review

The intersection of family law and property law raises intriguing questions related to identifying and protecting marital property rights. Because the viability of inalienable marital property depends upon the continuation of marriage as a status, Part I of this article questions the continuing viability of marriage as a means of financial, familial, and social order. Part II tracks the evolution of marital property in the United States and proposes that an inalienability rule reinvests the relationship of marriage with the economic consequences originally intended by state legislatures. Part III examines the metamorphosis of premarital agreements contemplating divorce from legally void …

Proxies For Loyalty In Constitutional Immigration Law: Citizenship And Race After September 11, Victor C. Romero

Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this article is to share some thoughts about using citizenship and race as proxies for loyalty in constitutional immigration discourse within two contexts: one historical and one current. The current context is the profiling of Muslim and Arab immigrants post-September 11, and the historical context is the distinction the Constitution draws between birthright and naturalized citizens in the Presidential Eligibility Clause.

Examining The Bullying Problem At Hopewell Memorial Junior High School, James M. Walsh Jan 2003

Examining The Bullying Problem At Hopewell Memorial Junior High School, James M. Walsh

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This study suggested a means for a school community to take a stand against student bullying. Many schools exist in the quagmire of disrespect and bullying. A school such as Hopewell Memorial Junior High is a typical example. In the 2000-2001 school year, there were 412 reported acts of student bullying to school administration. Of these discipline reports (referrals), 412 out of 785 total (52%) involved bullying. In the 2001-2002 school year, there were 306 reported acts of student bullying, which was 34% of the 877 total reports.

Through thoughtful analysis of this problem and consideration of the research literature, …

Post-Earnings Announcement Drift And Market Participants' Information Processing Biases, Lihong Liang Jan 2003

Post-Earnings Announcement Drift And Market Participants' Information Processing Biases, Lihong Liang

Accounting - All Scholarship

Prior research has been unable to explain the phenomenon known as post-earnings announcement drift, raising questions concerning the semi-strong form efficiency of the market typically assumed in capital market research. This study contributes to our understanding of this anomaly by examining drift in the context of theories that consider investors' non-Bayesian behaviors. The empirical evidence reveals that investors' overconfidence about their private information and the reliability of the earnings information are two important factors that explain drift. Finally, this study also provides insight into the puzzling relationship between dispersion and drift discussed in prior research.

Midwifery: Strategies On The Road To Universal Legalization, Laura Hermer Jan 2003

Midwifery: Strategies On The Road To Universal Legalization, Laura Hermer

Faculty Scholarship

Multiple studies have shown that direct-entry midwifery is just as safe, if not safer than, medical care in low-risk childbirth. Most births using direct-entry midwives require fewer interventions than those attended by physicians, yet yield excellent results. The results of these studies indicate that we should return to midwifery for normal births, rather than continuing to rely primarily on medicine. This option, however, has been significantly curtailed by many state legislatures and courts, despite decades of attempts to make incursions on the traditional paradigm of hospital births attended by obstetricians. As a result, where midwifery is more readily available, it …

Negligent Infliction Of Emotional Distress: Has The Legislative Response To Diane Whipple's Death Rendered The Hard-Line Stance Of Elden And Thing Obsolete, Michael Jay Gorback

UC Law Journal

On January 26, 2001, Diane Alexis Whipple was savagely attacked and mauled to death by two Presa Canario dogs as she was opening the front door to her San Francisco apartment. The following March, Whipple's partner, Sharon Smith, commenced a wrongful death lawsuit against the dogs' owners, Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel. Recognizing that under the current legal regime, Smith's suit would almost certainly be dismissed on demurrer because the two women were related by neither blood nor marriage, the California Legislature enacted section 1714.01 of the Civil Code, which would enable domestic partners, such as Smith, to sue for …

"Muslim Rage" And Islamic Law, Wael B. Hallaq Jan 2003

"Muslim Rage" And Islamic Law, Wael B. Hallaq

UC Law Journal

In this Lecture, it is argued that a significant factor behind the recent rise of so-called Islamic "fundamentalism," in both of its violent and nonviolent forms, is the structural uprooting of the Islamic legal institutions during the middle of the nineteenth century and thereafter (a factor neglected by analysts). When the colonialist powers induced western legal "reforms" that came to displace traditional and indigenous Islamic law, little did they realize that such a process of aggressive change was in the long run to lead to both brutal military dictatorships (during the past half century) and, more recently, to violent reactions …

“Promise Me Nothing On Heroes’ Square: Marianne Hoppe’S Twentieth Century", William Grange Prof. Dr.

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

On the occasion of Marianne Hoppe=s death in Siegsdorf, Bavaria on October 23, 2002, obituaries in several German newspapers recalled her as one of the great stars of the Third Reich. Most recalled her rise under the Nazis, and some inferred that she attained stardom largely for the wrong reasons. Her marriage to Hermann Goering's favorite actor and director, Gustaf Gründgens (1899-1963), was a political cloud that hovered over her until her death. Her frank admission that she was aware of the regime=s persecution, terror, and concentration camps did little to dispel persistent misgivings about her, even as she continued …

The Over-Claiming Technique: Measuring Self-Enhancement Independent Of Ability, Delroy L. Paulhus, Peter D. Harms, M. Nadine Bruce, Daria C. Lysy Jan 2003

The Over-Claiming Technique: Measuring Self-Enhancement Independent Of Ability, Delroy L. Paulhus, Peter D. Harms, M. Nadine Bruce, Daria C. Lysy

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

Overclaiming is a concrete operationalization of self-enhancement based on respondents’ ratings of their knowledge of various persons, events, products, and so on. Because 20% of the items are nonexistent, responses can be analyzed with signal detection formulas to index both response bias (over-claiming) and accuracy (knowledge). Study 1 demonstrated convergence of over-claiming with alternative measures of self-enhancement but independence from cognitive ability. In Studies 2–3, the validity of the overclaiming index held even when respondents were (a) warned about the foils or (b) asked to fake good. Study 3 also showed the utility of the over-claiming index for diagnosing faking. …
