Managing At-Risk Juvenile Offenders In The Community: Putting Evidence Based Principles Into Practice, Randy Borum Jan 2003

Managing At-Risk Juvenile Offenders In The Community: Putting Evidence Based Principles Into Practice, Randy Borum

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

More than a half-million juveniles are under community supervision as a result of violent or delinquent behavior. Research has shown that treatment can reduce their risk of reoffending. This article reviews and distills the key lessons from hundreds of empirical studies and metaanalyses and applies them to practice. The author argues for conducting systematic and developmentally informed risk assessments, selectively assigning intensive intervention to the highest risk offenders, focusing on criminogenic treatment targets, using proven interventions and treatment strategies, and applying rigor in implementation and follow-up.

Teaching Social Competence, Brenda Dewart Jan 2003

Teaching Social Competence, Brenda Dewart

Honors Capstones

Increasing children's social interactions among peers can be accomplished with the use of intervention. The purpose of this thesis was to find out if social competence is a skill that can be taught to preschool-aged children. The hypothesis stated that the use of a PALS Center in a preschool classroom would promote peer interaction among the children. In order to track the proposed improvement of peer relationships, one child's development within and outside of a PALS Center was tracked. Due to time constraints the thesis was not able to be setup as a true PALS Center, though the same concepts …

Nonviolence, Anabaptism, And The Impossible In Communication, Susan L. Trollinger Jan 2003

Nonviolence, Anabaptism, And The Impossible In Communication, Susan L. Trollinger

English Faculty Publications

In a sense, the discipline of communication is all about peace. This is so because the discipline seeks to explain the relationship between communication and understanding as well as to promote better understanding through instruction in effective communication practices. Thus, all sub-disciplines of communication-from organizational communication to public address to health communication-address both theoretical and practical questions about how communication assists or frustrates human understanding. To the extent that an understanding serves as an antidote to human conflict, then, communication seeks to promote peace.
