ASSESSMENT
Figuring It Out
Introduction
1. "Just a Buzzword?" by Margaret Brown ... 1 In the next article by Ron Dotterer he asks if assessment will still be a hot topic in 2008-and he was writing in 1988. What is the answer?
Why Do It?
2. "Assessment: A Retrospective Look" by Ron Dotterer ... 2 In this article, Ron Dotterer, at that time honors director at Susquehanna University and a member of the NCHC Executive Committee, provides an overview of assessment, which he calls "a new and improved brand name" for evaluation. Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner
Articles
This paper examines the effect of tort rules on behavior if people are optimistic or insensitive relative to true probabilities. The paper shows that under certain conditions both strict liability and negligence cause levels of care that are higher than, or equal to, what is efficient (rather than lower, which is the common assumption). The paper also shows that under certain conditions strict liability and negligence cause the same level of activity among optimists (more than is efficient). Other implications for tort law are discussed, as are the sensitivity of the results to the choice of how to model probability …

Death, Taxes, And Cognition, Lee Anne Fennell
Articles
The psychology of the estate tax is extraordinarily interesting and surprisingly underexplored. In this Article, Professor Fennell considers the ways in which behavioral law and economics might augment and revise existing understandings of the tax and of redistributive policy generally. The Article is structured around two puzzles that have been frequently identified in the estate tax literature: first, why popular opposition to the tax is so great, even among those who have no reason to expect estate tax liability; and second, why those whose estates are likely to be subject to the tax often do not take advantage of the …

A Resource Guide To Support Minority Students At The Elementary Grade In The Kent School District With Learning Difficulties In The Area Of Reading, Patricia L. Drobny
All Graduate Projects
A literature review was conducted to illustrate that there is an achievement gap in education between minority and white students. Probable causes contributing to the achievement gap and possible solutions to the gap were studied. The knowledge that high standards, a challenging curriculum and good teachers (Haycock, 2001), increases student achievement of minority students, inspired a project geared toward providing teachers with strategies to support minority students with learning difficulties in the area of reading. Integration Of American History And American Literature, Diane Main
Integration Of American History And American Literature, Diane Main
All Graduate Projects
The development of an integrated curriculum for American History and American Literature is presented. The purpose of this project is to integrate concepts from American History with the concepts typically taught in an American Literature course. This project is intended for use at the secondary level, specifically for use at Eisenhower High School, Yakima, Washington. Many feel that it is important for students to have the ability to transfer information from one area to another. It has also been deemed important that students are capable of critical thinking. The project that has been developed will help students do both.
