A Profile Of Consumer Bankruptcy Petitioners, Jean Lown, Barbara Rowe

All Archived Publications

Utah ranks first in the nation in the number of consumer bankruptcies per household. This study describes 2,567 Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Utah in 1997. Median debt level was $31,981 for Chapter 7 and $41,626 for Chapter 13 cases. While Utah boasts a high proportion of Chapter 13 repayment plans, only 10.8% of these cases were successfully completed. Debtors tended to be young, single earners, with short job tenure. Evidence also pointed to Utah’s low per capita income and large families as other contributors to bankruptcy.

Books

In general, test targets represent known values from an object or in a digital file, e.g., color patches, digital dots, lines with known dimensions, etc. The Macbeth ColorChecker is an analog target with 24 physical color patches. When captured by an input device and reproduced by an imaging system, we can compare tone and color relationships between the source target and its reproduction. On the other hand, the IT8.7/3 target is a digital file consisting of hundreds of patches with known CMYK digital values. When printed along side a signature, we can assess print quality quantitatively with the use of …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools, Christopher Cruise

Graduate Research Papers

There are many different characteristics that contribute to being an effective administrator. I believe an administrator must have a vision for his/her school. He or she must strive to constantly improve the educational experience for students by building a strong cultural community within the school that makes every student feel welcome. An administrator must work well with many different types of people within the school and community and must be willing to serve on many different committees to open lines of communication with all of the student body.

An administrator needs to surround himself with good people who share his …

Students' Perception Index Of The Mugc School Psychology Practicum : A Correlation Of Course Work With Practicum Experiences, C. Lee Chandler Iii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The perceived consistency between the course work and practicum of the Marshall University Graduate College school psychology program was investigated. The magnitude of consistency was determined by a Spearman correlation coefficient comparing students’ subjective rankings of the relative importance of various school psychologist activities as emphasized in the program’s course work with the relative importance of those same activities as relevant to the practicum setting. The findings suggest a significant degree of correlation at the (.05) significance level between what is emphasized in the program’s coursework and what is relevant to practicum experience.

Social Disorganization Theory And Crime In West Virginia, Billy Crum Jan 2003

Social Disorganization Theory And Crime In West Virginia, Billy Crum

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to test the social disorganization theory by determining how a community’s ability to maintain social control effects crime rate, especially in areas of West Virginia that are experiencing rapid social change. Do lack of social controls and rapid social change effect crime rates in rural areas, and if so, what kinds of crimes are likely to be effected? This study is going to attempt to answer this puzzling question. This study uses poverty rate, unemployment rate, and high school dropout rate as the independent variables, and crime rate as the dependent variable.

Modernist Space: Willa Cather’S Environmental Imagination In Context, Guy J. Reynolds Jan 2003

Modernist Space: Willa Cather’S Environmental Imagination In Context, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

One of the things that Cather’s writing teaches us is that space, especially “natural” space, is always mediated, always shaped. Cather’s own framing of nature was informed by some very specific, historically particular ideas. The modernity of Cather’s environmental imagination is illustrated by a comparison between her fictionalization of American spaces and Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural formation of space. An “environmental imagination” is at once an imagination of the environment and an imagination formed or created by the environment. Cather worked repeatedly toward this doubled state, finding a heightened, mystical state-of-being when we are both formed by and in mastery …

Toward A Symbiosis Of Ecology And Justice: Water And Land Conflicts In Frank Waters, Johns Nichols, And Jimmy Santiago Baca, Thomas Lynch Jan 2003

Toward A Symbiosis Of Ecology And Justice: Water And Land Conflicts In Frank Waters, Johns Nichols, And Jimmy Santiago Baca, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The literary form that dominates writing, and thinking, in the American West is what has become known, definitively, as "the Western." The all-too-familiar narrative describes the advance of Anglo-Saxon pioneers into a primitive and untamed West, spreading the forces of civilization in their wake. A countertradition, however, is prevalent in the Southwest. What we might suitably call "the Southwestern" describes the incursion of an aggressive foreign culture into an already settled region. In this narrative, the conflict is not over how to impose culture and tame and settle the land, but how to protect the culture that already exists and …

Examining Technology Acceptance By School Teachers: A Longitudinal Study, Paul J.H. Hu, Theodore H.K. Clark, Will W.K. Ma

Support & Other Units (THEi)

The role of information technology (IT) in education has significantly increased, but resistance to technology by public school teachers worldwide remains high. This study examined public school teachers’ technology acceptance decision-making by using a research model that is based on key findings from relevant prior research and important characteristics of the targeted user acceptance phenomenon. The model was longitudinally tested using responses from more than 130 teachers attending an intensive 4-week training program on Microsoft PowerPoint, a common but important classroom presentation technology. In addition to identifying key acceptance determinants, we examined plausible changes in acceptance drivers over the course …

An Ethnographic Study Of Antiwar Protestors, Sherrie Ladegast Jan 2003

An Ethnographic Study Of Antiwar Protestors, Sherrie Ladegast

McNair Scholars Journal

This is an ethnographic study of the recent antiwar protestors, focusing on the activists’ objectives and motivations for their participation in antiwar rallies and addresses any discernable personality types. The overall purpose is typical of “verstehen” sociology, which seeks to understand the world as the subjects understand it. I collected data through a “snowball” networking sample of thirty-four Western Michigan interviewees and observation, both participation and non-participation. In addition, a combined survey of Altemeyer’s RWA-scale and the Social Dominance Orientation Scale was administered to participants, but will be analyzed in a later study. A qualitative content analysis was conducted and …

Deliberative Discussion In The Classroom: Teaching Communication Through The Lens Of September 11th, Roy V. Wood, Andrea L. Sisk

Iowa Journal of Communication

Students in an introductory communication class explored the communicative roots of 9/11 by engaging in a deliberative discussion process. With the assistance of guest experts the instructors provided the students with background information on 1) the causes of violence and terrorism; 2) the nature of sacrifice and care, 3) the coverage of crisis in journalism, 4) the democratic theory of freedom of speech, and 5) the nature of heroism and leadership. Building on this knowledge base, the instructors taught the students to engage in a process of deliberation: question and problem definition, problem analysis, idea development, and discussion leadership to …

Moldy Bagels And New Toasters: Images Of Emotion In Workplace Relationship, Jayne M. Morgan Jan 2003

Moldy Bagels And New Toasters: Images Of Emotion In Workplace Relationship, Jayne M. Morgan

Iowa Journal of Communication

A symbolic interactionist perspective is used to explore employee perceptions of everyday emotion in supervisor and coworker relationships. Respondents presented images of emotional behaviors that varied by the positive or negative nature of the experience and the consistency of the emotional episode within the overall relationship. Results indicate that employees keep a power differential intact in their emotion images of supervisors regardless of relationship quality. In contrast, images of coworkers revealed a sense of equality regardless of relationship quality. Accounts of negative emotional episodes that were inconsistent with normally positive supervisor and coworker relationships were also explained in terms of …
