Reaffirm To Affirm: Enhancing Minority Faculty Development At The Pwi , Johnny D. Jones Ii, Willie J. Heggins Iii, Michelle Williams

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

The objective of this roundtable discussion is to examine the preparation of minority faculty as it relates to succeeding in an academic career. Although substantial research has been conducted on faculty preparation (Gaff, 1997; Garcia, 2000, Tice, Gaff, and Pruitt-Logan, 1998), conversations fall short when it comes to ongoing success development of faculty. This discussion will focus primarily on initiatives/plans to encourage the expansion and success of minority faculty at PWI's. For the purposes of this discussion, minority faculty is defined in terms of race/ethnic and gender.

Diversity In Action: An In-Depth Look At How The University Of Missouri-Kansas City Developed An Institutionalized Approach To Implementing Its Diversity In Action Strategic Initiatives , Joe Seabrooks, Linda Carter

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

As colleges and universities across the country affirm or reaffirm their commitment to educate people from all walks of life, it is critical that they are prepared to effectively serve and educate all students regardless of race, gender, nationality, age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or disability. As programs related to affirmative action continue to remain under fire and uncertain, institutions will need to develop their own conscious that will allow them to be able to successfully nurture and develop the leaders of tomorrow. Hence, the University of Missouri-Kansas City has developed seven strategic initiatives that are referred to as, "Diversity …

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

This presentation is twofold. We begin by examining the degree to which teaching diversity, at a mid-western predominately white institution, is disproportionately devolved onto academic departments and faculty who occupy devalued statuses within and outside academe. Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues , Judy A Rutledge Purnell Nov 2003

Crossing Boundaries To Engage In Difficult Dialogues , Judy A Rutledge Purnell

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 8th Annual National Conference (2003)

Crossing boundaries that lead to difficult dialogue touches upon the core of my academic existence. I teach about Africa and the world of Africans on a small predominately white campus outside of a major metro area. The topics that are introduced in my classes cross over many academic areas. With Africa as the starting point of all discussions, students gradually develop an "Afrocentric" perspective per the discussions of Asante. Not because it is the focus of the class, but because Africa is the origin of civilization according to Diop and others.

Psychological Factors Associated With Skin Cancer Detection Behaviors In Individuals With A Family History Of Melanoma, Lora M. Azzarello Nov 2003

Psychological Factors Associated With Skin Cancer Detection Behaviors In Individuals With A Family History Of Melanoma, Lora M. Azzarello

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current ACS guidelines recommend routine screening for cancer (ACS, 2002). Motivation to adhere to guidelines may be different for individuals with and without a family history of melanoma (Jonna, et al., 1998). Prior research examining the relationship between family history and skin cancer detection behaviors (Berwick et al., 1996; Friedman et al., 1993; Oliveria et al., 1999) have failed to utilize a theoretical framework to derive hypotheses. The purpose of the present study was to examine the utility of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) in explaining intentions to engage in skin cancer screening (SCS) and skin self-examination (SSE). In addition, the …
