Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas May 2003

Nicotine Modulates The Expression Of A Diverse Set Of Genes In The Neuronal Sh-Sy5y Cell Line, Travis Dunckley, Ronald J. Lukas

Translational Neuroscience

Nicotine exposure can have long lasting effects on nervous system function, some of which must contribute to nicotine dependence. Up-regulation, an increase in numbers of radioligand-binding nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), occurs on exposure to nicotine at high concentrations. To determine whether altered gene expression might account for long term changes and up-regulation following nicotine exposure, we assessed effects of 1 h of 1 mM nicotine exposure on alter. ation of gene expression in the neuron-like SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma clonal line. Repeat and cross-controlled microarray analyses yielded a list of 17 genes from the initially screened ∼5,000 whose expression was consistently altered …

The Influence Of Acculturation On The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test By Mexican Americans, Dean M. Coffey May 2003

The Influence Of Acculturation On The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test By Mexican Americans, Dean M. Coffey

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The relationship hctwccn the level of acculturation anManual de Normas y procedimientos para la Bateria Neuropsicologica en Espanol (Artiola i Fortuny, Hennosillo, Heaton, & Pardee, 1999) using the Mexico/U.S. border region norms in the manual. Significant differences were demonstrated for Total Number Correct (p < .01) for the less acculturated subgroup (n = 26). There were no significant differences between the more acculturated subgroup (n = 8) and the Spanish normative sample. This study demonstrates that the WCST is not a culture-free neuropsychological instrument. The results provide supporting evidence for the use of the Mexico/U.S. border region norms with Spanish-speaking Mexican Americans in the Northwest region of the United States.

Enron And Sarbanes-Oxley As Engines Of Cultural Change In A Theory Of Movement, Teresa Schmid May 2003

Enron And Sarbanes-Oxley As Engines Of Cultural Change In A Theory Of Movement, Teresa Schmid

Student Scholarship

Cultural change is a stubborn thing. The womens suffrage movement began with in 1792 with the publication of Mary Wolstonecrafts book, Vindication of the Rights of Women, and did not achieve its political goal until the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, 128 years later. The Civil Rights Movement traces its origins to the abolitionist movement of the mid 19th century, but while slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, the principle of social equality did become law until nearly 100 years later, upon the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As the continuing womens and civil …

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

Effect sizes are important for power analysis and meta-analysis. This has led to a debate on reporting effect sizes for studies that are not statistically significant. Contrary and supportive evidence has been offered on the basis of Monte Carlo methods. In this article, clarifications are given regarding what should be simulated to determine the possible effects of piecemeal publishing trivial effect sizes.

Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry May 2003

Single Versus Multiple Drug Focus In Substance Abuse Clinical Trials Research, Nancy M. Petry

UCHC Articles - Research

Complex patterns of multiple substance use pose clinical and methodological challenges for substance abuse clinical trials research. To increase measurement precision and internal validity, the modal approach has been to target both treatment interventions and outcome assessment to a single class of abused substance. This strategy warrants reconsideration because it entails limitations in recruitment feasibility and generalization of study findings. This report reviews pros and cons of single versus multiple targeted drugs, suggests guidelines for choosing between these strategies and outlines methods for broadening the scope of substance abuse clinical trails to take abuse of multiple substances into account. We …

An Analysis Of Preparedness And Qualifications Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Accounting Gradautes [!] Employed In Corporate America, Brandy Alexander May 2003

An Analysis Of Preparedness And Qualifications Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities' Accounting Gradautes [!] Employed In Corporate America, Brandy Alexander

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Historically black colleges and universities have been accused of not producing a quality education to accountants entering Corporate America. Attributes corporate recruiters look for in employment candidates include leadership, communication, and technical abilities. There has also been continuous concern if corporations are willingly hiring HBCD graduates because of qualifications or just filling the affirmative action quota. In order to determine the preparation and qualification HBCD's provided their accounting graduates, I designed a survey targeting accounting graduates of predominately black populated institutions currently employed in the corporate world . Fifty-two accountants representing twenty-one corporations and eleven HBCDs participated in the survey …

An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter May 2003

An Analysis Of Psychopathy Characteristics In A Non-Incarcerated Population, Ebony D. Hunter

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Psychopathy has received increased recognition as a critical clinical construct for evaluation and management of troubled individuals. To date, clinical research has examined psychopathy simply as a global construct rather than focusing on its specific criteria. In addition, researchers have tended to utilize downward extensions of adult, incarcerated conceptualization to understand general populations. Research pertaining to non-incarcerated diverse populations is scarce. This study is designed to assist in evaluation of personality traits related to psychopathy in a general, non-institutionalized population showing that there are selective psychopath characteristics present in non-incarcerated population.

The Relationship Between Tentative Drug And Self-Concept Among Rural African American Children In Four Bucolic Communities In Southern Louisiana, Chakema C. Carmack May 2003

The Relationship Between Tentative Drug And Self-Concept Among Rural African American Children In Four Bucolic Communities In Southern Louisiana, Chakema C. Carmack

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

This research contributes to the much-needed information on rural children in the South. While drug use plagues our society, research strives for answers to combat the destructive behavior. Very little research studies rural African American children and the effects these issues have on them. The present study (1) focuses on rural African American children's overall self-concept. (2) focuses on rural African American's children's tentative drug use to commonly known drugs of abuse, and (3) seeks out a relationship between attitudes of tentative drug use of an self-concept as they pertain to these African American Children in Southern communities, majority impoverished …

A Comparison Of Students' Anxiety Levels While Taking Computer Versus Paper And Pencil Timed Math Tests, Angela S. Jungerman

McCabe Thesis Collection

The purpose of this research is to compare and contrast the anxiety levels of students before and after taking the computerized timed math test with the levels before and after taking the paper-and-pencil timed math test. Two second-grade classes were used in this research with each student taking each test once. The computer test, found at www .saxonpublishers.com/activities/basic fact_ sheets/, consisted of 50 addition questions to be completed in 30 seconds, and the paper-and-pencil version, adapted by the researcher from a Saxon created test, consisted of 100 addition questions to be completed in 60 seconds. The students' blood pressures and …

A Different Future For Social And Behavioral Science Research, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky May 2003

A Different Future For Social And Behavioral Science Research, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

The dissemination of intervention and treatment outcomes as effect sizes bounded by conf idence intervals in order to think meta-analytically was promoted in a recent article in Educational Researcher. I raise concerns with unfettered reporting of effect sizes, point out the con in confidence interval, and caution against thinking meta-analytically. Instead, cataloging effect sizes is recommended for sample size estimation and power analysis to improve social and behavioral science research.

Attitude Changes Resulting From A Course In Middle East History, Aaron Imig May 2003

Attitude Changes Resulting From A Course In Middle East History, Aaron Imig

Master of Education Program Theses

This study explored the change in high school students' cultural acceptance of Islamic peoples after a semester long course in Middle East History. Ten senior high school students in a small Christian high school were tested in knowledge, visual perception, and cultural attitudes before and after the semester course. Final data collection suggests that the population size for this study needed to be larger and more diverse. The results were not significant enough to indicate attitudes were changed over the course of the semester. There was not a positive correlation found between knowledge gained by the students and the resulting …
