Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman May 2003

Stuttering Awareness, Joshua Bodman

Theses

This thesis project will provide information about stuttering and attempt to eliminate some of the stigmas attached to the disorder. By increasing awareness, more light will be cast on stuttering, eliminating some of the burden of disfluency. The disorder will no longer be a mystery if people understand that stuttering is composed of concrete thoughts, feelings and actions. A publicized campaign will dispel some of the negative views of this disorder and reduce the pressures that are created in different speaking situations. These stuttering awareness goals will be disseminated through a collection of design applications. The awareness campaign as presented …

Identifying Characteristics Of Deaf Poor Readers, Susan Post May 2003

Identifying Characteristics Of Deaf Poor Readers, Susan Post

Theses

This study is a spelling recall task. Stimulus words will be presented in three conditions - fingerspelling, sign and print. All subjects will encounter all three lists, presented serially, with brief pauses in between. Each list will comprise 18 words. In order to control for the familiarity effect, no word will be included in more than one list. Students will be instructed to write down the word they see. Data will be analyzed to determine whether or not "poor" readers evidence a different spelling error "profile" than "good readers." Spelling performance will also be correlated with Digit Span (OS) and …

The Experience Of Loss Of Voice In Adolescent Girls: An Existential-Phenomenological Study, Deborah A. Cihonski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of the Loss of Voice experience in adolescent girls using an existential-phenomenological interview approach. An open-ended interview was conducted and participants were asked to "Please think of a specific time when you had something important to say, but did not say it. In as much detail as possible, describe that experience." Each interview was tape-recorded, transcribed by the investigator, and then independently thematized (Jones, 1984) by the author and a doctoral colleague trained in Jones' (1984) analysis method. Interrater reliability of the themes reached 96% agreement for the overall sample. …

Teachers' Perspectives On Grade Retention: Is It Effective?, Joseph Terch Iv May 2003

Teachers' Perspectives On Grade Retention: Is It Effective?, Joseph Terch Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Grade retention has been a problem since the mid-19th century when the concept of individual grades replaced the one room schoolhouse. Extensive research was reported on grade retention, its effect, and impact on the referral of students with learning disabilities, parent and teacher perspectives. The research findings on retention are inconclusive and questionable. The purposes of this study are (a) to evaluate the teacher attitudes towards grade retention, and (b) to compare the differences of teacher attitudes at elementary, middle and high school levels. A survey was developed and approximately 150 were distributed to teachers. Of these 150, 120 were …

Literature related to Pupil Assistance Committees indicates they were established to increase the capacity of regular education to serve pupils with learning and behavior problems without labeling them as handicapped. New Jersey mandates the establishment of Intervention and Referral Services which are "a coordinated system in each building for the planning and delivery of intervention and referral services designed to assist students who are experiencing learning, behavior and health difficulties and to assist staff who have difficulties in addressing students' learning, behavior or health needs." (N.J.A.C. 6A: 16-7.1)

Effective Vocabulary Development For Secondary Students In Weekly Small-Group Sessions, Susan L. Lange May 2003

Effective Vocabulary Development For Secondary Students In Weekly Small-Group Sessions, Susan L. Lange

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quasi-experimental one group study was to (a) ascertain the vocabulary acquisition of low-achieving language students in grades 9-11 (n = 14), and (b) to determine if implementation of a program of explicit instruction would lead to a significant improvement of the volume of knowledge of a controlled list of vocabulary words. Results revealed that all participants showed positive change in the number of vocabulary items answered correctly from initial pretest to final posttest (M = +15 items), with an average 97% improvement. The time to acquire one new vocabulary word was approximately 10.6 minutes. Implications for …

Effects Of A Metacognitive Think-Aloud Strategy Used To Improve Reading Comprehension In A Group Of Third Graders, Megan C. Scully

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effectiveness of a metacognitive think-aloud strategy used to improve reading comprehension in a group of third grade students. Fourteen general education students were pre-tested using an individual reading inventory to determine baseline independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels. Explicit and systematic instruction in the strategy, as well as hands-on practice with each component of the strategy, lasted for twelve consecutive weeks. Subjects were then post-tested with different forms of the initial reading inventory. Comparisons of pre-test and post-test scores indicate an average of one year's growth in the independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels for all …
