Bridging Oceans: An Occupational Therapist's Journey Toward Client-Centeredness, Anna Liedberg Miron Jun 2003

Bridging Oceans: An Occupational Therapist's Journey Toward Client-Centeredness, Anna Liedberg Miron

Masters Theses

This study blends an autobiographical approach with a person's own narrative about her recovery experience to create an analytic framework for exploring how narratives of clients and practitioners can be used to inform occupational therapy practice. Beth and I shared 12 hours of audio-taped conversations about her recovery/rehabilitation experience one year after she had experienced a stroke. Beth was intimately involved in the process of editing her story during the research process. Narrative analysis that takes into account the flow of time was used in addition to identification of key stories that Beth felt were important in her recovery-process. Congruence …

“Won’T You Be My Neighbor?” Mr. Rogers As An Ethical Model, Thomas G. Plante Jun 2003

“Won’T You Be My Neighbor?” Mr. Rogers As An Ethical Model, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

I do believe that Mr. Rogers and his show influenced me to become a clinical psychologist. I knew of no psychologists or other mental health professionals while growing up. My mother, however, was an elementary school teacher and thought highly of public television in general and Mr. Rogers in particular. I believe that Mr. Rogers taught me that men can be thoughtful, sensitive, and open in discussing their feelings, and can see all of life as special. On reflection, I now see him as both an ethical and spiritual model.

Factors Correlating With Teachers' Use Of Computers In The Classroom, Samia A. Wahab Jun 2003

Factors Correlating With Teachers' Use Of Computers In The Classroom, Samia A. Wahab

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This study examined several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined in this study included teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs and outside influences. This was done by a review of past studies, administering two surveys (demographics questionnaire and Computer Attitude Scale) and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected schools in the Chicagoland area participating in the study. Data from the surveys were then examined by principle components analysis, multiple correlation and multiple regression analyses to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. …

Six Opinions By Mr. Justice Stevens: A New Methodology For Constitutional Cases?, Robert F. Nagel Jun 2003

Six Opinions By Mr. Justice Stevens: A New Methodology For Constitutional Cases?, Robert F. Nagel

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Essay examines six opinions authored by Justice John Paul Stevens for the purpose of assessing whether his iconoclastic methodology might represent an attractive alternative to standard doctrinalism. Each of the opinions involves an effort to reconcile the right "to be left alone" with some other constitutional value. In all but one, conventional formulae are replaced by rather candid interest balancing that draws on nonlegal cultural resources in a relatively transparent way. At its best, this approach allows for realism and a commonsensical accommodation of disparate interests. However, at its worst it leads to opinions that are characterized by a …

A War Of Words: Revelation And Storytelling In The Campaign Against Mormon Polygamy, Sarah Barringer Gordon Jun 2003

A War Of Words: Revelation And Storytelling In The Campaign Against Mormon Polygamy, Sarah Barringer Gordon

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In the nineteenth century, the power of religious belief transformed the legal landscape. This Article details how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the Mormon Church) instilled a new and very different law of marriage for followers. Plural marriage, or polygamy, was key to Mormons' revisioning of traditional Christian faith and practice. Polygamy was also key to a widespread popular campaign to outlaw the Mormon practice. Novelists drew on widely shared ideas about the proper relationship of church and state, and also on theories that Christian monogamy was the basic building block of society. Without separation …

Legal Feeling: The Place Of Intimacy In Interracial Marriage Law, Nancy Bentley Jun 2003

Legal Feeling: The Place Of Intimacy In Interracial Marriage Law, Nancy Bentley

Chicago-Kent Law Review

A will to stigmatize and prohibit black-white interracial marriage has been a defining national trait of U.S. culture. Although sex between the races was frequently tolerated, interracial marriage generated enormous opposition, especially after the Civil War. In order to understand this legal history, it is crucial to recognize the way a species of intimacy, the desire to marry, has the potential to shape legitimacy—to ratify or, conversely, to erode the authority of law itself. Jürgen Habermas's theory of the importance of the Intimsphäre to the public sphere helps to explain the force of marital desire in legal history. As Habermas …

The Quality Of Mercy Is Strained: How The Procedures Of Sexual Harassment Litigation Against Law Firms Frustrate Both The Substantive Law Of Title Vii And The Integration Of An Ethic Of Care Into The Legal Profession, Jay Marhoefer Jun 2003

The Quality Of Mercy Is Strained: How The Procedures Of Sexual Harassment Litigation Against Law Firms Frustrate Both The Substantive Law Of Title Vii And The Integration Of An Ethic Of Care Into The Legal Profession, Jay Marhoefer

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Despite the Supreme Court's clarification of substantive sexual harassment law in Faragher and Ellerth, achievement of remedies remains problematic because of the at times labyrinthine procedures of Title VII litigation. This is especially true when sexual harassment occurs in the legal profession because defendant law firms understand how to frustrate substantive outcomes and plaintiffs must look to the same system that engendered the harassment to provide them with remedies. Female plaintiffs that apply a feminist ethic of care to the dispute by seeking an in-house remedy first are likely to be further disadvantaged because of procedural requirements like mandatory …

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer Jun 2003

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer

Dissertations

The problem addressed by this research can be demonstrated through the following scenario: If we were to ask randomly chosen voters in the state of Michigan if they possessed sufficient knowledge of Great Lakes water diversion policy, the answer would likely be no. Yet, if after a short description of the purpose for this type of policy, the voter was questioned about supporting such actions he or she would likely voice strong support for strategies that would prevent water diversions.

The objective of this research was to understand why Michigan's voters would readily voice opposition to Great Lakes water diversions …

When Does An Idea Become An Innovation? The Role Of Individual And Group Creativity In Videogame Design, Feichin, Ted Tschang Jun 2003

When Does An Idea Become An Innovation? The Role Of Individual And Group Creativity In Videogame Design, Feichin, Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In between creativity studies of idea generation and knowledge management studies of the codification and transmission of knowledge are a fuller set of cognitive activities, including problem-solving and creative impulses. This paper examines the case of designers in the US videogame industry to develop a set of frames for determining how their ideas come about, how ideas are transformed in the process of product development, and when different models of organizing innovation are efficacious. It is found that different types of creativity are used in game design, that sometimes the individual is more influential, but that in many cases, the …

Linking Welfare Clients To Jobs: Discretionary Use Of Worker Social Capital, Michelle Livermore, Alison Neustrom Jun 2003

Linking Welfare Clients To Jobs: Discretionary Use Of Worker Social Capital, Michelle Livermore, Alison Neustrom

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The overarching theme of the 1996 welfare reform law was to move clients from dependency to self-sufficiency by facilitating their entry into the labor market. While numerous mechanisms were used to do this, this study explores discretionary actions taken by workers to help clients find jobs, namely, tapping into their own social capital. Respondents in one urban and one rural county in a southern state reported using their own social capital to get information regarding job openings and to exert influence to get clients hired. Notably, respondents at all levels of the bureaucracy expected this behavior to occur. Both the …

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison Jun 2003

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the school voucher debate. Because “the causes of poverty within the black community are both structural and behavioral,” and because the available evidence provides an inferential connection between education and poverty, I contend that the reigning legal and political theory as embedded in, and as explicated by the constitutional jurisprudence of the Zelman dissenters, and as exemplified by other commentators, fails to address adequately racial disparity and neglects to consider adequately the victims of the current public school hegemony. Hence, the legitimacy of much of the current opposition to school vouchers remains indefensible form an outsider perspective.
