An Examination Of The Longitudinal Effect Of The Washington Assessment Of Student Learning (Wasl) On Student Achievement, Donald C. Orlich

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Linn, Baker and Betebenner (2002) suggested using the effect size statistic as a measure of adequate yearly progress target (AYPT) as is required by PL 107-110. This paper analyzes a four-year data set from the required high-stakes test--Washington Assessment of Student Learning—using effect size as the AYPT metric. Mean scale scores for 4th, 7th and 10th grade reading and mathematics were examined. ...

Transformation: The Human Obstacles, Jens G. Pohl Jun 2003

Transformation: The Human Obstacles, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper addresses the human aspects of change at a time when the rapid wide-spread implementation of a new infostructure has become the cornerstone of national security policies. The author explores the behavioral characteristics of human beings from a point of view that is not based on inter-human comparisons, but on an examination of the innate physical, biological, intellectual, emotional, and social characteristics of our species. It is argued that the experience-based nature of the human cognitive system greatly reduces our ability to adapt to changes in our environment, exploit opportunities, and create new knowledge. A fundamental biological survival instinct …

Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Syndrome Following A Car Accident, D. B. Boivin, F. O. James, Jonathan Bruce Santo, O. Caliyurt, C. Chalk Jun 2003

Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Syndrome Following A Car Accident, D. B. Boivin, F. O. James, Jonathan Bruce Santo, O. Caliyurt, C. Chalk

Psychology Faculty Publications

The authors report the case of a 39-year-old sighted woman who displayed non-24-hour sleep–wake cycles following a car accident. The phase relationship between endogenous circadian markers such as plasma melatonin and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin rhythms and self-selected sleep times was abnormal. A laboratory investigation indicated that she was sensitive to bright light as a circadian synchronizer. MRI and brain CT scans were normal, but microscopic brain damage in the vicinity of the suprachiasmatic nucleus or its output pathways is plausible.

The Development Of Language Choice In A German Immersion School, Miranda Kussmaul Novash Jun 2003

The Development Of Language Choice In A German Immersion School, Miranda Kussmaul Novash

Dissertations and Theses

When bilinguals converse with one another, they make choices about which language to speak. Many different factors have been shown to influence adult bilinguals' language choice, including interlocutor, setting, discourse content and discourse function. Less, however, is known about the factors influencing the language choice behavior of young bilinguals. Although case studies have provided into the type of language choice behavior exhibited by individual children, there is a lack of knowledge of the course of development from the language choice behavior of early childhood bilinguals to the more complex behavior of adult bilinguals.

This thesis examines the developmental pattern of …

Validity Generalization And Transportability: An Investigation Of Distributional Assumptions Of Random-Effects Meta-Analytic Methods, Jennifer L. Kisamore Jun 2003

Validity Generalization And Transportability: An Investigation Of Distributional Assumptions Of Random-Effects Meta-Analytic Methods, Jennifer L. Kisamore

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Validity generalization work over the past 25 years has called into question the veracity of the assumption that validity is situationally specific. Recent theoretical and methodological work has suggested that validity coefficients may be transportable even if true validity is not a constant. Most transportability work is based on the assumption that the distribution of rho ( ρi ) is normal, yet, no empirical evidence exists to support this assumption. The present study used a competing model approach in which a new procedure for assessing transportability was compared with two more commonly used methods. Empirical Bayes estimation (Brannick, 2001; …

Investigating The Acceptability Of Behavioral Interventions In Applied Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Moving From Analog Conditions To Naturalistic Settings, Richard J. Cowan, Susan M. Sheridan Jun 2003

Investigating The Acceptability Of Behavioral Interventions In Applied Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Moving From Analog Conditions To Naturalistic Settings, Richard J. Cowan, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Whereas there exists a vast literature investigating consumer satisfaction ratings of various behavioral interventions, the majority of these studies have been limited to analogue conditions, which may compromise utility and generalization. Additionally, most research has failed to explore multiple-source, multiple-setting data in the investigation of treatment acceptability. This study investigated parent, teacher, and child treatment acceptability ratings derived from field-based conjoint behavioral consultation cases. Data indicate that overall, parents, teachers, and children rated conjoint behavioral consultation–based behavioral interventions as very to highly acceptable. For parents, interventions with a reductive component were rated as more acceptable than interventions using both positive …
