Institutional Capacity For Elder Service, Nancy Morrow-Howell, Jim Hinterlong, Michael Sherraden, Fengyan Tang, Prima Thirupathy, Madhura Nagchoudhuri

Center for Social Development Research

Given the demographic changes in our society and the positive effects of volunteering on older adults and on service recipients, service opportunities for older adults should be expanded. The development of institutions is a potentially powerful route to maximizing this potential. We propose five dimensions of institutional capacity, including expectation, access, information, incentive, and facilitation. Pilot data indicates that organizations offering service opportunities to older adults vary on these dimensions.

Omission Bias In Vaccination Decision: Where's The "Omission"? Where's The "Bias"?, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Several studies have reported that parents are often reluctant to vaccinate their own or other people's children, even when the balance of health risks and benefits clearly favors vaccination. This reluctance has been interpreted as a manifestation of omission bias, a general tendency to prefer inactive to active options even when inaction leads to worse outcomes or greater risks. The research raises significant public health concerns as well as worries about human decision biases in general. In this paper we argue that existing research on vaccination decisions has not convincingly demonstrated any general reluctance to vaccinate nor has it made …

Archetypal Trials And The Management Of Dissent: Some Insights From Marketing Theory, Pnina Lahav Jul 2003

Archetypal Trials And The Management Of Dissent: Some Insights From Marketing Theory, Pnina Lahav

Faculty Scholarship

Recent marketing theory uses the Jungian concept of the archetype to design strategies for the improvement of product selling. Mark and Pearson propose that archetypes such as the ruler, the hero, the outlaw, and the sage are useful in promoting a product. This article suggests that the concept of archetypes as well as myths such as the Prometheus myth and the myth of the expulsion from Paradise, when combined with the insights offered by Mark and Pearson, may help in understanding the management of trials of dissent as well. The article presents seven motifs that recur in trials of dissent …
