Catholic School Counseling: From Guidance To Pastoral Care, Robert Murray, Kristy Suriano, Judith Madden Sep 2003

Catholic School Counseling: From Guidance To Pastoral Care, Robert Murray, Kristy Suriano, Judith Madden

Journal of Catholic Education

Those ministering to youth increasingly find themselves having to address numerous issues and complexities, which extend beyond the scope of the school setting. Catholic school students are not immune to these issues, and to address the needs of their students, Catholic school counselors must embrace aspects of the social sciences that affirm and elevate the message of the Gospel. The intent of this article is to present a Christian perspective of guidance counseling and to highlight those orientations and therapies that uphold Christian values.

The 'Race To The Bottom' Returns: China’S Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond Sep 2003

The 'Race To The Bottom' Returns: China’S Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

China is now, and increasingly, an integral player in the global economy and in international relations. Economic and political restructuring in China today is affecting the lives of millions, yet only a small number of top bureaucrats and wealthy regime-backed entrepreneurs are making the basic decisions about the outcome of this process. This bureaucratic and entrepreneurial class resists fiercely any serious attempt to build independent and democratic institutions such as trade unions.

This article will consider four areas of concern. First, the structural changes underway in the Chinese economy are creating both domestic and international imbalances that are exacerbating inequalities …

Scientific Collaboratories In Higher Education: Exploring Learning Style Preferences And Perceptions Of Technology, Diane H. Sonnenwald, Bin Li Sep 2003

Scientific Collaboratories In Higher Education: Exploring Learning Style Preferences And Perceptions Of Technology, Diane H. Sonnenwald, Bin Li

Faculty Publications

Scientific collaboratories hold the promise of providing students access to specialized scientific instruments, data and experts, enabling learning opportunities perhaps otherwise not available. However, evaluation of scientific collaboratories in higher education has lagged behind their development. We conducted a repeated-measures study that provided data regarding social interaction learning styles and perceptions of a scientific collaboratory system from 40 university science students working face-to-face and remotely. Students with a strong competitive learning style preference or who worked with a student with a strong competitive learning style reported a slightly more positive perception of the relative advantage, compatibility and complexity of the …

Experimental Methods In Neuroscience: An Undergraduate Neuroscience Laboratory Course For Teaching Ethical Issues, Laboratory Techniques, Experimental Design, And Analysis, Adam C. Hall, Mary E. Harrington Sep 2003

Experimental Methods In Neuroscience: An Undergraduate Neuroscience Laboratory Course For Teaching Ethical Issues, Laboratory Techniques, Experimental Design, And Analysis, Adam C. Hall, Mary E. Harrington

Psychology: Faculty Publications

We have developed and recently taught a 200 level undergraduate course entitled, 'Experimental Methods in Neuroscience'. This is a required course in an increasingly popular Neuroscience major at Smith College. Students are introduced initially to issues of animal ethics and experimentation, and are familiarized with our Animal Care Facility. Using an open field and rotarod apparatus, and the elevated plus and Barnes mazes, they conduct behavioral testing of two strains of mice, C57/BL/6J and 129S1/SvImJ, known to exhibit distinct behavioral traits. The group then employs histological techniques to prepare brain sections for observing neuroanatomical variation between strains (for example, 129S1/SvImJ …

Thinking Outside The Body: An Advantage For Spatial Updating During Imagined Versus Physical Self-Rotation, Maryjane Wraga Sep 2003

Thinking Outside The Body: An Advantage For Spatial Updating During Imagined Versus Physical Self-Rotation, Maryjane Wraga

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three studies examined effects of different response measures on spatial updating during self-rotation. In Experiment 1, participants located objects in an array with a pointer after physical self-rotation, imagined self-rotation, and a rotation condition in which they ignored superfluous sensorimotor signals. In line with previous research, updating performance was found to be superior in the physical self-rotation condition compared with the other 2. In Experiment 2, participants performed in identical movement conditions but located objects by verbal labeling rather than pointing. Within the verbal modality, an advantage for updating during imagined self-rotation was found. In Experiment 3, participants performed physical …

Drivers Of Logistics Excellence: Implications For Carriers, Karl B. Manrodt Sep 2003

Drivers Of Logistics Excellence: Implications For Carriers, Karl B. Manrodt

Journal of Transportation Management

Technological advances have increased customer expectations during an era of increasing cost controls. Shippers are becoming more demanding as technologies being developed offer greater visibility and control in the supply chain. The question remains, however, as to what are the key drivers of this technological change, and where is the market headed. Will these changes merely add cost or will they enable carriers to compete effectively in the market? The purpose of this article is to highlight six major drivers of logistics excellence, and to provide the carrier community with some thoughts as to how to respond to these emerging …

Testing The Dynamic Field Theory: Working Memory For Locations Becomes More Spatially Precise Over Development, Anne R. Schutte, John P. Spencer, Gregor Schöner Sep 2003

Testing The Dynamic Field Theory: Working Memory For Locations Becomes More Spatially Precise Over Development, Anne R. Schutte, John P. Spencer, Gregor Schöner

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The dynamic field theory predicts that biases toward remembered locations depend on the separation between targets, and the spatial precision of interactions in working memory that become enhanced over development. This was tested by varying the separation between A and B locations in a sandbox. Children searched for an object 6 times at an A location, followed by 3 trials at a B location. Two- and 4-year-olds’, but not 6-year-olds’, responses were biased toward A when A and B were 9-in. and 6-in. apart. When A and B were separated by 2 in., however, 4- and 6-year-olds’ responses were biased …

Indicators For Safe Family Reunification: How Professionals Differ, Brad R. Karoll, John Poertner Sep 2003

Indicators For Safe Family Reunification: How Professionals Differ, Brad R. Karoll, John Poertner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Many professionals who work with substance-affected families consider the time limits prescribed by the Adoption and Safe Families Act (1997) to be unrealistically short. The high prevalence of substance use in child welfare cases requires professionals to quickly determine when it is safe to reunify children placed because of abuse or neglect in concert with this serious family problem. This exploratory study identified similarities and differences on different indicators of safe reunification between judges who hear juvenile cases, private agency child welfare caseworkers, and substance abuse counselors. The study examined these professionals' rating of the importance of each indicator. Judges, …

Scaffolding Critical Reflection In Online Discussions: Helping Prospective Teachers Think Deeply About Field Experiences In Urban Schools, Joan Whipp Sep 2003

Scaffolding Critical Reflection In Online Discussions: Helping Prospective Teachers Think Deeply About Field Experiences In Urban Schools, Joan Whipp

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A teacher educator uses the methodology of a design experiment to compare patterns and levels of reflection in two semesters of her students’ e-mail discussions about field experiences in urban schools. Analysis of discussion transcripts during the earlier semester revealed that higher levels of reflection were rare. With a number of changes in both the design and level of support for the discussions, students during the second semester were more inclined to write at higher levels of reflection. Important scaffolds for higher levels of reflection seemed to be tailored and general questioning from the instructor and peers, critical readings on …
