The Indigenous Vote: Protecting Or Endangering Sovereignty?, David E. Wilkins Jan 2003

The Indigenous Vote: Protecting Or Endangering Sovereignty?, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Much ado has been made about the 2002 mid-term congressional and gubernatorial elections. Democrats are bemoaning the Republican's treble triumph—congressional control, an invigorated Bush administration, and conservative rule on the supreme court. Republicans are exulting in their perceived conservative mandate—to address the War on Terror, privatize Social Security, and roll back environmental regulations that are deemed overly restrictive of private and public property development. And the inconsistent American voter, depending on race, socio-economic status, and issue salience, seems either unenthusiastic, ambivalent, or wildly animated about politics.

Teaching A Multiagent Systems Class With Game Days: Designs And Lessons Learned, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2003

Teaching A Multiagent Systems Class With Game Days: Designs And Lessons Learned, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In the Fall semester of 2002, I introduced and taught a class in Multiagent Systems. The class was aimed for seniors (with special permission) and graduate students in Computer Science, covering some breadth and depth of issues in multiagent systems. One of the requirements was participation in four Game Days. On each Game Day, student teams competed against each other in games related to issues such as auction, task allocation, coalition formation, and negotiation. This article documents my designs of and lessons learned from these Game Days. The Game Days were very successful. Through role-playing, the students were motivated and …

Inter-Domain Dynamic Routing In Multi-Layer Optical Transport Networks, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2003

Inter-Domain Dynamic Routing In Multi-Layer Optical Transport Networks, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Next-generation optical transport networks will automatically and dynamically provision end-to-end connections. In this paper, we study the problem of inter-domain dynamic routing under a multi-layer multi-domain network model, which allows the end-to-end connections to be set up not only across multiple routing domains but also through two transport layers: the optical layer and the digital layer. In this model, a connection can traverse the domain boundary either through optical bypass or through optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) processing. We propose an inter-domain dynamic routing scheme with modest time complexity to address the problem from an algorithmic perspective.

Learning Monotone Dnf Using Spp Teaching Assistant, N. V. Vinodchandran Jan 2003

Learning Monotone Dnf Using Spp Teaching Assistant, N. V. Vinodchandran

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper we prove a new upper bound on learning monotone DNF formulae in an exact learning model called the teaching assistant model. This model, introduced in one of our earlier works, uses teaching assistant classes for classifying the complexity of learning problems. Teaching assistant classes are a learning-theoretic analog of complexity classes. We show that monotone DNF are learnable using a teaching assistant in the class SPP. On the other hand, concept classes such as k-CNF or Boolean circuits are not learnable using an SPP teaching assistant unless Np SPP. We also observe that the recent SPP algorithm …

A Novel Fiber Delay Line Buffering Architecture For Optical Packet Switching, Lin Li, Stephen Scott, Jitender S. Deogun Jan 2003

A Novel Fiber Delay Line Buffering Architecture For Optical Packet Switching, Lin Li, Stephen Scott, Jitender S. Deogun

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Due to the lack of optical random access memory, optical fiber delay line (FDL) is currently the only way to implement optical buffering. Feed-forward and feedback are two kinds of FDL structures in optical buffering. Both have advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a more effective hybrid FDL architecture that combines the merits of both schemes. The core of this switch is the arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and the tunable wavelength converter (TWC). It requires smaller optical device sizes and fewer wavelengths and has less noise than feedback architecture. At the same time, it can facilitate preemptive priority …

A New Efficient Algorithm For Solving The Simple Temporal Problem, Lin Xu, Berthe Y. Choueiry Jan 2003

A New Efficient Algorithm For Solving The Simple Temporal Problem, Lin Xu, Berthe Y. Choueiry

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper we propose a new efficient algorithm, the Δ STP-solver, for computing the minimal network of the Simple Temporal Problem (STP). This algorithm achieves high performance by exploiting a topological property of the constraint graph (i.e., triangulation) and a semantic property of the constraints (i.e., convexity) in light of the results reported by Bliek and Sam-Haroud [1], which were presented for general CSPs and have not yet been applied to temporal networks. Importantly, we design the constraint propagation in Δ STP-solver to operate on triangles instead of operating on edges and implicitly guarantee the decomposition of …

Perceptions Of Communication In A Family Relationship And The Reduction Of Intergroup Prejudice, Jordan Soliz, Jake Harwood Jan 2003

Perceptions Of Communication In A Family Relationship And The Reduction Of Intergroup Prejudice, Jordan Soliz, Jake Harwood

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

From a contact theory perspective, links between variation in young adults’ perceptions of communication with their grandparents and attitudes toward older adults are examined. The analysis pays particular attention to variation in communication with multiple grandparents and finds links be-tween that and perceived variability in the older adult population as a whole. More variation in perceptions of communication with grandparents is associated with perceptions of older adults as more heterogeneous. However, variation in grandparent relationships is associated with more negative attitudes toward older adults on measures of attitudinal central tendency. The results are dis-cussed in terms of intergroup communication processes, …

On Approximating Weighted Sums With Exponentially Many Terms, Deepak Chawla, Lin Li, Stephen Scott Jan 2003

On Approximating Weighted Sums With Exponentially Many Terms, Deepak Chawla, Lin Li, Stephen Scott

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Multiplicative weight-update algorithms such as Winnow and Weighted Majority have been studied extensively due to their on-line mistake bounds’ logarithmic dependence on N, the total number of inputs, which allows them to be applied to problems where N is exponential. However, a large N requires techniques to efficiently compute the weighted sums of inputs to these algorithms. In special cases, the weighted sum can be exactly computed efficiently, but for numerous problems such an approach seems infeasible. Thus we explore applications of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to estimate the total weight. Our methods are very general and …

Indirect Symbolic Correlation Approach To Unsegmented Text Recognition, George Nagy, Sharad C. Seth, Y. Lin, Shashank K. Mehta Jan 2003

Indirect Symbolic Correlation Approach To Unsegmented Text Recognition, George Nagy, Sharad C. Seth, Y. Lin, Shashank K. Mehta

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

The new non-parametric approach to unsegmented text recognition builds two bipartite graphs that result from the feature-level and lexical comparisons of the same word against a reference string which need not include the query word. The lexical graph preserves the relative order of edges in the feature graph corresponding to correctly recognized features. This observation leads to a subgraph-matching formulation of the recognition problem. An initial implementation proves the robustness of the approach for up-to 20% noise introduced in the feature-level graph.

Low-Energy Bist Design For Scan-Based Logic Circuits, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth, Sheng Zhang Jan 2003

Low-Energy Bist Design For Scan-Based Logic Circuits, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth, Sheng Zhang

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In a random testing environment, a significant amount of energy is wasted in the LFSR and in the CUT by useless patterns that do not contribute to fault dropping. Another major source of energy drainage is the loss due to random switching activity in the CUT and in the scan path between applications of two successive vectors. In this work, a new built-in self-test (BIST) scheme for scan-based circuits is proposed for reducing such energy consumption. A mapping logic is designed which modifies the state transitions of the LFSR such that only the useful vectors are generated according to a …

Combining Ordering Heuristics And Bundling Techniques For Solving Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Amy Beckwith, Berthe Y. Choueiry Jan 2003

Combining Ordering Heuristics And Bundling Techniques For Solving Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Amy Beckwith, Berthe Y. Choueiry

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We investigate techniques to enhance the performance of backtrack search procedure with forward-checking (FC-BT) for finding all solutions to a finite Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). We consider ordering heuristics for variables and/or values and bundling techniques based on the computation of interchangeability. While the former methods allow us to traverse the search space more effectively, the latter allow us to reduce it size. We design and compare strategies that combine static and dynamic versions of these two approaches. We show empirically the utility of dynamic variable ordering combined with dynamic bundling in both random problems and puzzles.

A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2003

A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

This paper is a comprehensive research review on the learner control strategies in software tutoring systems. With the application of more computer techniques in education and the involvement of more adults in software tutoring systems, the learner control strategy has become more appreciated than tutor control or program control. In this paper, the efficiency and necessity of learner control in software tutoring systems is discussed through the description of learning mechanism. Some typical applications of learner control strategies in software tutoring systems are presented. The available learner control strategies are classified from two perspectives: educational theory, and software mechanism. Finally, …

On Generalized Multiple-Instance Learning, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Joshua Brown Jan 2003

On Generalized Multiple-Instance Learning, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Joshua Brown

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We describe a generalization of the multiple-instance learning model in which a bag’s label is not based on a single instance’s proximity to a single target point. Rather, a bag is positive if and only if it contains a collection of instances, each near one of a set of target points. We list potential applications of this model (robot vision, content-based image retrieval, protein sequence identification, and drug discovery) and describe target concepts for these applications that cannot be represented in the conventional multiple-instance learning model. We then adapt a learning-theoretic algorithm for learning in this model and present empirical …

Effects Of Oxide Coating And Selected Cations On Nitrate Reduction By Iron Metal, Yong H. Huang, Tian Zhang, Patrick J. Shea, Steve D. Comfort Jan 2003

Effects Of Oxide Coating And Selected Cations On Nitrate Reduction By Iron Metal, Yong H. Huang, Tian Zhang, Patrick J. Shea, Steve D. Comfort

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Under anoxic conditions, zerovalent iron (Fe0) reduces nitrate to and magnetite (Fe3O4) is produced at near-neutral pH. removal was most rapid at low pH (2–4); however, the formation of a black oxide film at pH 5 to 8 temporarily halted or slowed reaction unless the system was augmented with Fe2+, Cu2+, or Al3+. Bathing the corroding Fe0 in a Fe2+ solution greatly enhanced nitrate reduction at near-neutral pH and coincided with the formation of a black precipitate. X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy confirmed that both …

Long-Lived Pluvial Episodes During Deposition Of The Navajo Sandstone, David B. Loope, Clinton M. Rowe Jan 2003

Long-Lived Pluvial Episodes During Deposition Of The Navajo Sandstone, David B. Loope, Clinton M. Rowe

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Navajo Sandstone of the American Southwest was deposited at approximately 190 Ma in a giant, subtropical dune field near the western margin of Pangea. From this unit, we report thick intervals of dune cross-strata that were churned by insects and trampled by reptiles. Although dunes continued to migrate freely, the distribution of trace fossils shows that plant life in wet interdune areas sustained high levels of animal activity on the dunes for many thousands of years. We interpret this suite of structures as the record of a pluvial episode climatologically similar to the period of “greening” in the Sahara …

Geography Of Religion And Belief Systems, Robert H. Stoddard, Carolyn V. Prorok Jan 2003

Geography Of Religion And Belief Systems, Robert H. Stoddard, Carolyn V. Prorok

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Spatial and environmental dimensions of religious behavior, artefacts, and attitudes are grist for the geographer’s intellectual mill because spiritually motivated convictions and actions play an important role in human affairs. It is not surprising, therefore, that the geography of religion and belief systems is an important, emerging field of study. We commence this chapter with a definition of the field, particularly as it entails distinctions that arise out of the highly personal nature that religious belief is accorded in the academy and society at large. A limited review and summary of trends in the field over the past decade follows, …

2mass J0516288+260738: Discovery Of The First Eclipsing Late K + Brown Dwarf Binary System?, Sonja L. Schüh, Matt A. Wood

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We report the discovery of a new eclipsing system less than one arcminute south of the pulsating DB white dwarf KUV 05134+2605 . The object could be identified with the point source 2MASS J0516288+260738 published by the Two Micron All Sky Survey. We present and discuss the first light curves as well as some additional colour and spectral information. The eclipse period of the system is 1.29 d, and, assuming this to be identical to the orbital period, the best light curve solution yields a mass ratio of m₂/m₁=0.11, a radius ratio of r₂/r₁ ≈ 1 and an inclination of …

We report 323 hours of nearly uninterrupted time series photometric observations of the DBV star GD 358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during May 23rd to June 8th, 2000. We acquired more than 232 000 independent measurements. We also report on 48 hours of time-series photometric observations in Aug 1996. We detected the non-radial g-modes consistent with degree ℓ = 1 and radial order 8 to 20 and their linear combinations up to 6th order. We also detect, for the first time, a high amplitude ℓ = 2 mode, with a period of 796 s. In the 2000 …

Multisite Observations Of The Pms Δ Scuti Star V351 Ori, Vincenzo Ripepi, T D. Oswalt, Mark J. Rudkin, Kyle B. Johnston Jan 2003

Multisite Observations Of The Pms Δ Scuti Star V351 Ori, Vincenzo Ripepi, T D. Oswalt, Mark J. Rudkin, Kyle B. Johnston

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present the results of multisite observations spanning two years on the pre-main-sequence (PMS) star V351 Ori. A total of around 180 hours of observations over 29 nights have been collected, allowing us to measure five different periodicities, most likely related to the δ Scuti variability of V351 Ori. Comparison with the predictions of linear nonadiabatic radial pulsation models put stringent constraints on the stellar parameters and indicate that the distance to V351 Ori is intermediate between the lower limit measured by Hipparcos (210 pc) and that of the Orion Nebula (450 pc). However, radial pulsation models are unable to …

Ulysses Cospin Observations Of Cosmic Rays And Solar Energetic Particles From The South Pole To The North Pole Of The Sun During Solar Maximum, Robert Bruce Mckibben, Ming Zhang Jan 2003

Ulysses Cospin Observations Of Cosmic Rays And Solar Energetic Particles From The South Pole To The North Pole Of The Sun During Solar Maximum, Robert Bruce Mckibben, Ming Zhang

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

In 2000–2001 Ulysses passed from the south to the north polar regions of the Sun in the inner heliosphere, providing a snapshot of the latitudinal structure of cosmic ray modulation and solar energetic particle populations during a period near solar maximum. Observations from the COSPIN suite of energetic charged particle telescopes show that latitude variations in the cosmic ray intensity in the inner heliosphere are nearly non-existent near solar maximum, whereas small but clear latitude gradients were observed during the similar phase of Ulysses’ orbit near the 1994–95 solar minimum. At proton energies above ∼10 MeV and extending up to …

Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis Jan 2003

Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis

Graduate Research Papers

As more institutions of higher education invest in technology, an increased number of educators have to keep up with those technologies. Technology opens new opportunities to teach and to learn. However, if technology is to be used to support learning, educators must first be comfortable using technology. In order for educators to become comfortable and to effectively use technology in their own teaching, staff development opportunities must be set in place. Staff development programs need to be relevant to the specific needs of educators of higher education. Because technology is rapidly changing, it is impossible for educators to know all …

In January of 2001, President Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act. "The act redefines the federal role in K-12 education and will help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged and minority students and their peers. It is based on four basic principles: stronger accountability for results, increased flexibility and local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven to work" (No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, 2003). The passing of the No Child Left Behind Act has added pressure to schools and departments around the country to meet …

Self-Perceptions, Peer Influence, Social Information Processing And Bullying Behavior, Jaime Strickler

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on self-perceptions of bullies, · peer influence on bullying behavior, and social information processes of bullies. These three variables were chosen in an attempt to understand some of the potential causes of bullying behavior and to examine their effects during bullying episodes. While self-perceptions of bullies may be positive or negative, it is unclear as to the direction of influence between self-perceptions and bullying. Peer influence on bullying can vary from situation to situation; but it is clear. that peers do have an influence in bullying episodes. The social information …

Absorption Spectroscopy Of Colored Dissolved Organic Carbon In Georgia (Usa) Rivers: The Impact Of Molecular Size Distribution, Yosef Z. Yacobi, James J. Alberts, Monika Takacs, Michelle Mcelvaine Jan 2003

Absorption Spectroscopy Of Colored Dissolved Organic Carbon In Georgia (Usa) Rivers: The Impact Of Molecular Size Distribution, Yosef Z. Yacobi, James J. Alberts, Monika Takacs, Michelle Mcelvaine

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was collected in six rivers that transect the coastal plain of Georgia in July 1999 and February 2000. DOC concentrations ranged from 4.9 to 40.7 g m-3 and from 7.1 to 40.5 g m-3, respectively. The absorption coefficient at 440 nm was highly correlated with DOC concentration, suggesting that the optical parameter may be utilized for rapid estimation of DOC in these waters. The isolated DOC was separated into fractions of operationally defined molecular size, using an ultrafiltration technique that yielded three fractions: <10 ("small"), 10-50 ("medium") and >50 ("large") kilodalton. The smallest fraction was the most abundant (>50%) in …
