Integrating Biological Principles In Environmental Engineering Education: Summary Results Of A Three-Year Pilot Study, Daniel B. Oerther
Integrating Biological Principles In Environmental Engineering Education: Summary Results Of A Three-Year Pilot Study, Daniel B. Oerther
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Teaching biology to engineers is a challenge. For environmental engineers, biological principles are necessary to understand microorganisms that are removed from drinking water as well as microorganisms that treat waste in sewage treatment plants and bioremediation field sites. At the University of Cincinnati, we integrated state-of-the-art research in environmental microbiology within our graduate and undergraduate environmental engineering curricula. For the past three years, we taught a novel course entitled, "Molecular Biology in Environmental Engineering." Course evaluations over the past three years suggested that the course was successful for primarily two reasons, namely: (1) the course employed a problem-based learning approach …

What's Need Got To Do With It? Barriers To Use Of Nonprofit Social Services, Rebecca Joyce Kissane
What's Need Got To Do With It? Barriers To Use Of Nonprofit Social Services, Rebecca Joyce Kissane
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In recent years, legislators have called upon private nonprofit and proprietary organizations to assume a larger role in provision of public benefits to poor persons. Little research, however, has examined poor people's willingness to use nonprofit agencies in lieu of public welfare. This analysis draws data from over 2 years of fieldwork and in-depth interviews with twenty poor women in Philadelphia. I demonstrate that decisions to use nonprofits are contingent upon stigma, information, practical predicaments (e.g., agency hours), and perceived need. I explore the implications of these impediments in a post-welfare reform landscape, while focusing on how decisions to use …

Service-Learning In Agricultural Instruction: A Guide For Implementing Real-World, Hands-On, Community Based Teaching And Learning, Carol E. O'Neil
Guides
Service-learning (SL) is defined as "a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility" (Bringle and Hatcher, 1995). The service-learning movement has gained tremendous popularity during the past decade in response to visionaries like Boyer (1990), who called for radical change in higher education toward the "scholarship of engagement," in which universities engage with communities as equal partners for the …

Can Status Be Revealed? Dichotomous Cultural And Physiological Markers Of Social Differentiation In Two Pre-Pottery Neolithic B Sites In The Levant, Monika L. Trahe
Masters Theses
Bioarchaeological studies utilize linear enamel hypoplasias (LEH) to discuss and interpret the health among peoples of the past. This research explores the bioarchaeology from two Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (9,000-8,500 BP) sites in south-central Levant, Kfar HaHoresh and Yiftahel, to uncover a record of health and social status in order to understand these sites in the context of the greater Levantine Pre-Pottery Neolithic period.
Archaeological evidence suggests that the Kfar HaHoresh site served as a mortuary complex in which the elite from surrounding communities, such as Yiftahel, are buried (Goring-Morris 2000). This research examines the biological remains alongside the archaeological evidence …

Journal of Medical Education
Palliative care is an important and emerging medical specialty in the area of end-of-life care. Almost all physicians are required to take care of a terminally ill patient at some point in their care, but previous studies from around the world have identified inadequate palliative care training for both medical students and general practitioners. The objectives of this study were to understand junior medical student knowledge of palliative care and how it improved after a one week training course. The study, a quasi-experimental design, recruited eighty medical students between 2001 and 2003 participating in a one-week course named “The human …

OBJECTIVE: Overweight, particularly obesity is a major risk factor for several important diseases, especially hypertension, coronary heart diseases and diabetes mellitus. Our aim is to determine the prevalence of obesity and central obesity among Omani adults aged >/=20 years, and to identify the socio-demographic and health variables that correlate to obesity and central obesity in a community based survey (National Health Survey, 2000). METHODS: A community based cross-sectional survey representing all parts of Oman was designed in the year 2000. A part of the survey was a door to door interviews including demographic data, weight, height, hip and waist measurements, …
Digital Divide And Purchase Intention: Why Demographic Psychology Matters, Syed H. Akhter
Digital Divide And Purchase Intention: Why Demographic Psychology Matters, Syed H. Akhter
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
The author examines the issue of digital divide from a demographic perspective. The influence of gender, age, education, and income on the likelihood to purchase over the Internet is empirically examined. Hypotheses are framed in the context of psychological correlates of the demographic variables. Findings show that these variables significantly influence the likelihood to purchase over the Internet and can be used to profile, segment, and target markets and develop public policies to bridge the digital divide.

Health Risks, Past Usage, And Intention To Use Weight Loss Products In Normal Weight Women With High And Low Body Dysphoria, B. L. Whisenhunt, D. A. Williamson, Richard G. Netemeyer, J. Craig Andrews
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Objective: There are many health risks involved with the use of weight loss products by normal weight women. The mass media may compound this problem through the promotion of weight loss products and a thin body size. This study tested women's perceptions of different weight loss product ads to determine if body dysphoria (i.e., an over concern with body size and shape in normal weight people) was associated with risk beliefs, past behaviors, and intention toward using weight loss products.
Method: Normal weight women (age range = 18-41 yr), who were classified as either high (n=45) …

Building A State Child Care Initiative: Applying Principles Of Teamwork And Collaboration, Susan K. Walker
Journal of Extension
It has long been advocated that, for Extension to respond to critical public issues, it will have to work across disciplines and as teams. This article reviews one state's efforts in building a child care initiative. Over the past 5 years, Maryland Cooperative Extension has pulled together individual county and city Extension family and Consumer Sciences educators to provide coordinated child care provider training and to build a statewide system of service to its audience and support to its members. Recommendations about team-building efforts are provided.

Leadership Practices Of West Virginia University Extension Agents Working With The 4-H Youth Development Program, William Woodrum, R Dale Safrit
Journal of Extension
A descriptive study explored leadership practices of West Virginia University Extension Service (WVUES) agents with an appointment in 4-H and Youth programs. The researchers utilized a census and a mailed questionnaire for the study that incorporated both the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire MLQ. Overall, respondents' usage of both transactional and transformational leadership practices was average, with nearly equal usage of both leadership approaches. The authors discuss implications for WVUES that will affect its ability to achieve the visionary goals to which it aspires.

Dietary Changes By Expanded Food And Nutrition Education Program (Efnep) Graduates Are Independent Of Program Delivery Method, Barbara Hd Luccia, Mary E. Kunkel, Katherine L. Cason
Journal of Extension
Dietary changes of Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) graduates who participated in either individual or group education sessions were assessed. Paraprofessionals administered the Homemaker's 24-Hour Food Recall to EFNEP graduates. EFNEP graduates significantly improved the number of servings consumed from the grains, vegetables, dairy, and meat and meat alternates food groups. Graduates also significantly increased total calories consumed, dietary fiber intake, as well as iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 intake. These results were independent of method of nutrition education. Further research should determine the reasons why group instruction is as effective as individual instruction.

Review Of Micromedium Digital Trainer Professional(R) As A Tool For Developing Teaching And Extension Training Programs, Y Martin Lo, Lisa N. Sadar
Journal of Extension
The authors have been using Digital Trainer Professional® software for more than 4 years and found it to be effective in teaching classes and Extension training programs. The merit of the program is that, instead of reading a training manual or paper book, trainees interact with an e-book on their computer. E-books can track the reader's knowledge and evaluate responses to questions to measure their progress and performance, and gauge the effectiveness of the training.
Fetal Attachment Among Pregnant Substance Users, Trisha Paulette Barcley
Fetal Attachment Among Pregnant Substance Users, Trisha Paulette Barcley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Identification of factors that may lead to child maltreatment is important for intervention at the earliest point in time. Substance use can adversely impact the developing bond between mother and child. The formation of an insecure attachment relationship may place the child at a greater risk for child abuse or neglect. If the mother-child bond can be assessed during pregnancy then intervention relating to attachment and prevention of child abuse may be possible. The relationships between childhood history of and the potential for child abuse, substance use, and fetal attachment were investigated utilizing a sample of 56 pregnant women from …
Comparison Of Receptor Efficacies On Vascular Smooth Muscle Contraction, Oommen K. George
Comparison Of Receptor Efficacies On Vascular Smooth Muscle Contraction, Oommen K. George
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Vascular smooth muscle contraction involves multiple signal-transduction pathways, the interrelations of which are not completely understood. Our objectives in this project were to compare the effects of phenylephrine (alpha1-adrenergic agonist, angiotensin II (AT1 agonist), clonidine (alpha2-adrenergic agonist) and moxondine (alpha2- adrenergic /I1-imidazoline agonist) on contraction in the rat-tail artery. Functionally, all these agonists cause contraction, but biochemically there are differences in how the result is achieved. We wanted to determine the role of protein kinase C (PKC) in the functional regulation between AT1 and alpha1-adrenergic receptor pathways. In …
Potential Mechanisms Explaining The Antitumor Effect Of Total-Body Irradiation, Glen Michael Miller
Potential Mechanisms Explaining The Antitumor Effect Of Total-Body Irradiation, Glen Michael Miller
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
While numerous reports have documented that radiation exposure increases the risk for malignancy and suppresses immune mechanisms, increasing evidence has suggested that low-dose total-body irradiation (TBI) may alter leukocyte composition and function leading to heightened immune responsiveness and long-term remission of certain cancers. Having observed that moderate-dose TBI produces an antitumor effect in the Lewis lung carcinoma (EEC) model, the major goal of this study was to determine whether changes in tumor growth could be correlated with radiation-induced alterations of immune system parameters. The governing hypothesis was that selective immune augmentation, i.e. upregulation of specific leukocyte subsets, is primarily responsible …

Long-Term Almond Supplementation: Effects On Diet, Eating Patterns, And Satiety In Free-Living Healthy Individuals, Karen Jaceldo-Siegl
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Because of the growing evidence of the cardio protective effect of nuts, examining the potential of nuts as a healthy food choice for the larger population should be considered. The purpose of this 12-month crossover study was to evaluate the impact on diet, eating patterns, and satiety of supplementing a self-selected diet (with little or no nuts) with ~52 g of almonds in free-living healthy males (43) and females (38) between the ages 25 and 70 years. The first six months constituted the control period where subjects followed their habitual diet (HD). During the intervention (second 6 months), subjects were …

Pre-Exercise Fueling And Endurance: Effect Of A Pre-Exercise Almond-Raisin Beverage Versus A Commercial Sports Beverage On Performance In Trained Male Runners, Wendy N. Bazilian
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Aside from genetics and training, no factor plays as important a role in exercise performance as nutrition. What athletes consume before exercise longer than 60 min influences fuel use, perceived exertion (RPE), heart rate (HR) and time-to-exhaustion (TE). Ingesting carbohydrates (CHO) before exercise can delay exhaustion over placebo, but less is known about combinations of CHO and fat on fuel use and endurance. To date, there are few studies that systematically explore nutritious, whole food products like nuts and dried fruits as pre-exercise fuel sources for endurance exercise.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 …
