Functional And Comparative Genomic Analyses Of An Operon Involved In Fructooligosaccharide Utilization By Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Rodolphe Barrangou, Eric Altermann, Robert W. Hutkins, Raul Cano, Todd Klaenhammer
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic organism that displays the ability to use prebiotic compounds such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which stimulate the growth of beneficial commensals in the gastrointestinal tract. However, little is known about the mechanisms and genes involved in FOS utilization by Lactobacillus species. Analysis of the L. acidophilus NCFM genome revealed an msm locus composed of a transcriptional regulator of the LacI family, a four-component ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport system, a fructosidase, and a sucrose phosphorylase. Transcriptional analysis of this operon demonstrated that gene expression was induced by sucrose and FOS but not by glucose or fructose, suggesting …

Career Readiness And Preparation Criteria In Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs, Kathleen E. Klein
Career Readiness And Preparation Criteria In Undergraduate Dance Degree Programs, Kathleen E. Klein
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The purpose of the research study was to examine the history and philosophy of certain very distinct dance degree programs. The dissertation is intended to serve as a resource to benefit faculty and administrators in American undergraduate and graduate level dance programs. The primary goal was to recognize emergent themes aimed at stronger outcomes for students seeking a career track in dance. Beginning with an overview of the historical development of dance and dance education in the United States, the study closely examined the current cultural, educational, and political structures, functions, and mechanisms which influence prevailing public views of this …

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman
Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman
Agribusiness
The US dairy industry is shaped by a patchwork of regulations accumulated over a long history of intervention to achieve various, sometimes conflicting, policy goals. Price supports have long been a central feature of dairy markets, but were largely withdrawn beginning in 1988. Since that time, there has been a dramatic increase in the variability of farm milk and milk product prices. The origins and desirability of volatility has been the subject of much debate; unfortunately models in existence to date have shed little light on the question due to their adoption of essentially non-dynamic methods. This article introduces a …

Ascaris Suum: Cdna Microarray Analysis Of 4th Stage Larvae (L4) During Self-Cure From The Intestine, Motoko Morimoto, Dante Zarlenga, Hunter Beard, Nadim Alkharouf, Benjamin F. Matthews, Joseph F. Urban Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
There is spontaneous cure of a large portion of Ascaris suum 4th-stage larvae (L4) from the jejunum of infected pigs between 14 and 21 days after inoculation (DAI). Those L4 that remain in the jejunum continue to develop while those that have moved to the ileum are eventually expelled from the intestines. Although increases in intestinal mucosal mast cells and changes in localhost immunity are coincidental with spontaneous cure, the population of L4 that continue to develop in the jejunum may counteract host protective mechanisms by the differential production of factors related to parasitism. To this end, a cDNA library …

Herbivore Abundance In Simple And Diverse Habitats: The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Plant Diversity And Habitat Structure, Laura F. Altfeld
Herbivore Abundance In Simple And Diverse Habitats: The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Plant Diversity And Habitat Structure, Laura F. Altfeld
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Herbivore abundances are determined by a set of interacting factors that vary among different habitat types. Specifically, herbivore abundances in monocultures and polycultures may be governed by the same set of factors but with varying influences in the different habitats. In addition, monophagous and polyphagous herbivores may respond differently to the same set of influencing factors. I examined several abiotic and biotic factors in manipulated monocultures and polycultures of Borrichia frutescens in a west central Florida salt marsh. The experimental plots differed in both plant diversity and aboveground habitat structure to see how each component of diversity contributed to variability …

Models With Nuclear, Cytoplasmic, And Environmental Effects For Production Traits Of Columbia Sheep, Kathryn J. Hanford, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck
Models With Nuclear, Cytoplasmic, And Environmental Effects For Production Traits Of Columbia Sheep, Kathryn J. Hanford, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Statistical models (16) were compared for birth weight of 24,741 Columbia lambs recorded at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station (USSES; 1950 to 1998). The goal was to estimate fractions of variance due to cytoplasmic line (c2; n = 590) and sire × cytoplasmic line interaction (sc2; n = 12,831) with other nuclear and environmental effects included in the model. The basic model included direct genetic (fractional variance, a2; n = 26,623), maternal genetic (m2, with direct-maternal correlation ram), and maternal permanent environmental (p2m ; n = 6,385) effects. The model with …
Health Beliefs And Parenting Attitudes Influence Breastfeeding Patterns Among Low-Income African-American Women, Phyllis W. Sharpe, Ayman A.E. El-Mohandes, M. Nabil El-Khorazaty, Michele Kiely, Tessa Walker
Health Beliefs And Parenting Attitudes Influence Breastfeeding Patterns Among Low-Income African-American Women, Phyllis W. Sharpe, Ayman A.E. El-Mohandes, M. Nabil El-Khorazaty, Michele Kiely, Tessa Walker
Publications and Research
OBJECTIVE: To describe breastfeeding initiation among 210 urban African-American mothers with inadequate prenatal care.
METHODS: This study is a case–control study of postpartum mothers recruited from four large urban hospitals.
RESULTS: Mothers who chose to breastfeed were more educated, employed before birth, married, and using contraception postnatally. Regression model analysis controlling for demographic differences revealed that breastfeeding was significantly associated with a higher perception of severity of illness and higher confidence in the ability of health care to prevent illness. Breastfeeding mothers were less likely to reverse parent– child roles and had a lower perception of hassle from their infant’s …
