Helicobacter Pylori Infection And Micronutrient Deficiencies., Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Shahab Abid
Helicobacter Pylori Infection And Micronutrient Deficiencies., Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Shahab Abid
Section of Gastroenterology
It is known that deficiencies of micronutrients due to infections increase morbidity and mortality. This phenomenon depicts itself conspicuously in developing countries. Deficiencies of iron, vitamins A, E, C, B12, etc are widely prevalent among populations living in the third world countries. Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection has a high prevalence throughout the world. Deficiencies of several micronutrients due to H pylori infection may be concomitantly present and vary from subtle sub-clinical states to severe clinical disorders. These essential trace elements/micronutrients are involved in host defense mechanisms, maintaining epithelial cell integrity, glycoprotein synthesis, transport mechanisms, myocardial contractility, brain development, cholesterol …

On-Station Production Of Native Speargrass Hay In Western Australia, G L. Krebs, Robert R. Rouda, S P. Van Wyngaarden
Bulletins 4000 -
This report documents the practical and economic feasibility of on-station harvesting and production of speargrass hay and haylage and its subsequent feeding to cattle and sheep in the extensive regions of south-eastern Western Australia. Four hundred and ten bales weighing an average 275 kg were produced from a total harvested area of 40.6 ha in the vicinity of Duck Dam on Kanandah Station. In the lead up to harvesting, seasonal conditions were among the best on record. Half of the bales produced were further processed into haylage. Two feeding trials, involving wethers at Arubiddy and steers at Kanandah, were undertaken …
The Growing Importance Of Advance Medical Directives In The Military, Thaddeus A. Hoffmeister
The Growing Importance Of Advance Medical Directives In The Military, Thaddeus A. Hoffmeister
School of Law Faculty Publications
While the litigation in the Terri Schiavo case is an extreme example of what can go wrong in the health care decision-making process, it highlights the importance of advance medical directives (AMD) in helping to ensure patient autonomy during end-of-life medical treatment. Unfortunately, large segments of society, to include the military, are still unclear about the role of AMDs in patient care. Thus, this article provides a broad overview of AMDs and their legal applications with a particular emphasis on expanding their use in the military community. This article begins with a discussion of living wills and durable powers of …

Anthropometric And Physiological Responses To Prolonged Open Water Rowing: A Case Study, Dan A. Gordon
Anthropometric And Physiological Responses To Prolonged Open Water Rowing: A Case Study, Dan A. Gordon
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
The objective of the study was to examine the anthropometric and physiological responses to a prolonged period of open water rowing 4950 km. A single male (novice) rower underwent assessment of anthropometric variables, pre- and post-race, for the assessment of mass (kg), girths of selected regions, skinfold thickness and regional muscularity. The results showed that following 61 days of continual rowing there was a decrease in the participant's mass by 11.7%, sum of skinfolds decreased by 19.5 cm and regional muscularity decreased by 11.1 %. The data would suggest that the participant exhibited symptoms of muscle atrophy and energy deficit. …
Morph-Dependent Fatty Acid Oxidation In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Trade-Off Between Dispersal And Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao
Morph-Dependent Fatty Acid Oxidation In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Trade-Off Between Dispersal And Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao
Anthony Zera Publications
Although a considerable amount of information is available on the ecology and physiology of wing polymorphism, much less is known about the biochemical–genetic basis of morph specialization for dispersal versus reproduction. Previous studies have shown that the dispersing morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, prioritizes the accumulation of triglyceride flight fuel over ovarian growth, while the opposite occurs in the flightless morph during the first week of adulthood. In this study, we compared the in vivo rate of lipid oxidation between genetic stocks of flight-capable versus flightless morphs to determine the role of lipid catabolism in morph specialization …

Physical Activity And Stroke Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Chong Do Lee, Aaron R. Folsom, Steven N. Blair
Physical Activity And Stroke Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Chong Do Lee, Aaron R. Folsom, Steven N. Blair
Faculty Publications
Background and Purpose - Whether physical activity reduces stroke risk remains controversial. We used a meta-analysis to examine the overall association between physical activity or cardiorespiratory fitness and stroke incidence or mortality.
Methods - We searched MEDLINE from 1966 to 2002 and identified 23 studies (18 cohort and 5 case-control) that met inclusion criteria. We estimated the overall relative risk (RR) of stroke incidence or mortality for highly and moderately active individuals versus individuals with low levels of activity using the general variance-based method.
Results - The meta-analysis documented that there was a reduction in stroke risk for active or …

Delinquency Jurisdiction In A Unified Family Court: Balancing Intervention, Prevention, And Adjudication, Gloria Danziger
Delinquency Jurisdiction In A Unified Family Court: Balancing Intervention, Prevention, And Adjudication, Gloria Danziger
All Faculty Scholarship
This article will examine the demographics of the current juvenile delinquency caseloads and will argue that, despite trends toward greater punitive measures-including placement of juveniles in adult courts for certain offenses, the concept of a therapeutic "family-centered court," which inspired Jane Addams and her colleagues, remains the most promising approach to delinquency, articulated most notably by the proponents of the unified family court concept. The article will consider and address objections and concerns raised with respect to this approach, looking at ways in which several states have incorporated juvenile delinquency into a family-centered unified family court.

Structural Analysis Of Gelsolin Using Synchrotron Protein Footprinting, Janna G. Kiselar, Mark R. Chance
Structural Analysis Of Gelsolin Using Synchrotron Protein Footprinting, Janna G. Kiselar, Mark R. Chance
Faculty Scholarship
Protein footprinting provides detailed structural information on protein structure in solution by directly identifying accessible and hydroxyl radical-reactive side chain residues. Radiolytic generation of hydroxyl radicals using millisecond pulses of a synchrotron "white" beam results in the formation of stable side chain oxidation products, which can be digested with proteases for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Liquid chromatography-coupled MS and tandem MS methods allow for the quantitation of the ratio of modified and unmodified peptides and identify the specific side chain probes that are oxidized, respectively. The ability to monitor the changes in accessibility of multiple side chain probes by monitoring …

Feeding Responses Of Juvenile And Adult Streblospio Benedicti Webster (Spionidae) To Organic Chemicals Bound To Glass Microbeads, Heidi Kathryn Mahon
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Spionid polychaetes feed at the sediment-water interface using a pair of ciliated palps. Polychaetes select food particles based upon characteristics including size, texture, specific gravity and organic coatings. Juvenile and adult spionids have different stable isotopic carbon signals, indicating the potential to differentiate organic cues ontogenetically. In the present study, the feeding responses of juvenile and adult Streblospio benedicti Webster to seven organic coatings bound (five amino acids and two carbohydrates) to glass microbeads were tested. Juveniles and adults were highly selective for all seven types of organically coated beads. Juveniles were highly selective for threonine; whereas adults were highly …
