Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang Nov 2003

Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agriculture is a resource-intensive enterprise. The manner in which food production systems utilize resources has a large influence on environmental quality. To evaluate prospects for conserving natural resources while meeting increased demand for cereals, we interpret recent trends and future trajectories in crop yields, land and nitrogen fertilizer use, carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas emissions to identify key issues and challenges. Based on this assessment, we conclude that avoiding expansion of cultivation into natural ecosystems, increased nitrogen use efficiency, and improved soil quality are pivotal components of a sustainable agriculture that meets human needs and protects natural resources. To achieve …

Prevalence Of Medically Compromised Patients Referred For Periodontal Treatment To A Teaching Hospital In Central Saudi Arabia, Khalid Almas, Fatin A. Awartani

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Many patients seeking dental care have a significant medical condition that may alter both the course of their oral disease and the treatment provided. The aim of this study was to assess the systemic diseases profile of patients with periodontal diseases for specialized periodontal treatment. METHODS: Seven hundred and forty-three patient9s medical records were screened from the Periodontal Clinics and referred to the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, a teaching hospital in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a special care during the period from January 2002 to June 2002. Bilateral Simultaneous Hip Fractures Secondary To An Epileptic Seizure, Mustafiz M. Rahman, Adnan Awada Nov 2003

Bilateral Simultaneous Hip Fractures Secondary To An Epileptic Seizure, Mustafiz M. Rahman, Adnan Awada

Saudi Medical Journal

A 30-year-old man sustained bilateral simultaneous displaced subcapital fractures of neck of femur during an epileptic tonic-clonic seizure. After admission to the hospital approximately 18 hours later, internal fixation of the fractures with dynamic hip screw was undertaken. Post operatively, he was managed by early motion and weight bearing on the second day. Despite the severity of the fractures and delayed surgery, satisfactory union of the fractures was noted at 6 months when bone densitometry was normal. At 3 years follow up, there was no sign of avascular necrosis of the femoral heads.

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott Nov 2003

Sublime Hunger: A Consideration Of Eating Disorders Beyond Beauty, Sheila Lintott

Faculty Journal Articles

n this paper, I argue that one of the most intense ways women are encouraged to enjoy sublime experiences is via attempts to control their bodies through excessive dieting. If this is so, then the societal-cultural contributions to the problem of eating disorders exceed the perpetuation of a certain beauty ideal to include the almost universal encouragement women receive to diet, coupled with the relative shortage of opportunities women are afforded to experience the sublime.

Effects Of Salts On Crystallization Kinetics And Rheological Behavior Of Concentrated , -Trehalose Solutions, Marina Cerdeira, M. C. Puppo, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of addition of CaCl2 2H2O and MgCl2 6H2O on crystallization kinetics and the rheological behavior of a 70% trehalose solution was studied by polarized light microscopy and dynamic oscillatory rheometry. Salts caused a delay on nucleation with induction times for crystallization longer for Mg2+ than for Ca2+. Divalent cations were incorporated into crystals, changing the growth of certain faces preferentially, which resulted in changes in morphology. Addition of CaCl2 2H2O in a high salt/trehalose molar ratio dramatically increased complex modulus (G*), indicating a stronger viscoelastic behavior. A gel-like structure was formed when Ca2+ was added to trehalose solution. …

Newspaper Coverage Of Animal Abuse, Lara Jasmine Imbrock Nov 2003

Newspaper Coverage Of Animal Abuse, Lara Jasmine Imbrock

Student Work

The abuse of animals is an important social issue. Animals play a vital role in society, serving as companions and service animals for people. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to evaluate Midwest newspaper coverage of animal abuse in 1993, 1998, and 2002. The theories of social construction of reality, agenda setting, and priming were used to examine the effects of media coverage of animal abuse. Results showed that animal abuse has received increased coverage over the years.

Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong Oct 2003

Are Biotech Crops And Conventional Crops Like Products? An Analysis Under Gatt, Julian Wong

Duke Law & Technology Review

The transatlantic debate over the use of genetically modified organisms ("GMO"s) as food products, with the US as a proponent on one side, and the European Union ("EU") as an opponent on the other, is set to take center stage. The US has initiated formal legal action under the World Trade Organization Dispute Settlement System, charging that the EU violates several agreements of international trade law, including Article III of GATT, an anti-protectionist measure which forbids a country from favoring its own products over imported "like products." The US claims that GMOs and conventional crops are "like products,, and that …
